The Polar Music Prize The Polar Music Prize is one of the most prestigious and unique music prizes in the world, crossing over musical boundaries and awarded to individuals, groups and institutions in recognition of exceptional achievements. The Prize was founded in 1989 by the late Stig ”Stikkan” Anderson, one of the true greats in the history of popular music. As the publisher, lyricist and manager of ABBA, he played a key role in their enormous success. The name stems from Anderson´s legendary , Polar Records. The Prize is awarded in August every year, from the hand of His Majesty, King Carl XVI Gustaf. www.polarmusicprize.org

ARENAS Stockholm can now boast with two newly built world class arenas. With room for over 100 000 spectators in total, there is plenty of room for world class music- and sporting events. Here we’ve gathered the essential phenomena. But there are endless choices, especially at several of the city’s hotel bars.

Classical music Ballet, opera or classical concerts. Stockholm has five venues dedicated to classical performances and a wide selection of events targeting children. More than a half million swedes are active in organized choirs and the Eric Ericsson Hallen, named after the legendary choir profile is dedicated to choir singing.

Berwaldhallen The Berwaldhallen is home to the Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester (public radio symphony orchestra) and Radiokören (choir), and one of the country's most important cultural institutions reaching far beyond the borders via the collaboration within EBU. The hall was opened in 1979. Berwaldhallen aims to present swedish, reflected in the large number of commissioned works by Swedish composers. Stockholm Concert Hall Built in 1926, this is the main hall for orchestral music in Stockholm. This blue building is a perfect example of neoclassicism in architecture and art. Home to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, The Nobel Prize Ceremony and the Polar Music Price Ceremony. www.konserthuset.se

The Royal Opera House Sweden's national stage for opera and ballet, and was founded by King Gustav III in 1792. The Opera is also the site of the assassination of King Gustav III, immortalized in Guiseppe Verdi's opera “Un ballo in maschera” (A Masked Ball). www.operan.se

Eric Ericson Hallen Eric Ericson Hallen is a concert hall in Stockholm specialized for choirs, housed in the former Skeppsholmskyrkan. Eric Ericson Hall is named after the Swedish conductor and legendary choir profile and is operated by Eric Ericson International Choral Centre (EIC). SUMMER OPERA Drottningholm Court theatre opened in 1766, listed on UNESCOs World Heritage list, performs new productions of 17th and 18th century opera in its original scenery from the 18th century. Summer Opera Festival. www.dtm.se Ulriksdals Slottsteater Confidencen opened in 1753 and is situated in the Royal National City Park in Solna. Singing for christmas, spring and summer Many of the Swedish holidays are associated with song and dance. And the Stockholmers are singing, at birthdays, during Walpurgis to celebrate spring, at school graduation, while eating pickled herring at midsummer and during the crayfish in August. OUTDOOR SUMMER CLUBS Swedes love the outdoors and Stockholmers are no exception. The most popular clubs move outdoors during the warm and light summer nights. From the beginning of June until the end of August, the best dance floors in the city are under the bridges, on the roof of Kulturhuset and in the parks.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC EVENTS Swedes love to sing and choral music is a popular movement. Here are three popular Stockholm spectacles for those looking to seize upon the Swedish musical tradition.

Allsång på Skansen (Singalong at Skansen) On Tuesday evenings in July, Skansen’s Sollidenscenen fills up with visitors ready to sing from near and far. And that’s how it’s been for nearly 80 years. The audience includes everyone from gray-haired ladies with canes to urban youths and families with children. Sweden is one of world’s foremost choral singing nations – maybe the singalong is one of the secrets. Allsång is just one of many music experiences here. www.skansen.se

Ångfartyget Blidösund (Steamship Bildösund) Music and food combine with the sight of Stockholm’s beautiful archipelago out the window of a classic steamship. Could it be any more Swedish? Live music on the aft deck. The season begins in early May and ends in late October. Most cruises depart from the Royal Palace at 6:30 pm and return to the dock at 10:15 pm. www.blidosundsbolaget.se

Gröna Lund To check out the most popular Swedish artists of the moment, head for the amusement park. During the season, Gröna Lund offers over 50 concerts by Swedish and international stars, as well as 85 dance nights with everything from Swedish dance bands to tango and salsa. www.gronalund.com

Folkmusic at Stallet Stallet is a venue for folk music and dance from Sweden and all around the world, a musical oasis in the big city bustle. Stallet arranges seminars, dance classes and the Stockholm Folk Festival in August every year. www.stallet.st
