  • 2007 Pinot Noir Southeast Block
    THE SOUTHEAST BLOCK The Southeast Block is a six-acre section of the Bethel Heights estate vineyard that consistently gives us wines of distinctive character. It was planted in 1979 on a south-facing slope between 420 and 520 feet elevation. The red clay soil is volcanic in origin, three feet deep and well drained. The vines are 100% Pommard clone, planted on their own roots in Oregon's pre- phylloxera days. At 30 years old the vines are still healthy and apparently phylloxera-free. The crop is held close to two tons per acre for optimum quality. THE 2007 VINTAGE was a classic cool Oregon vintage, similar to 2005 (and 1999 and 2001) and 2007 PINOT NOIR ® SOUTHEAST BLOCK very different from 2006, our hottest vintage on record. In 2007, the summer provided adequate Certified Sustainably Grown heat to ripen the fruit, and the fall finished cool, allowing the grapes to fully express their varietal Harvest date: October 5th, 2007 character without losing acidity and without Grapes at harvest: accumulating excessively amounts of sugar, as Pinot noir tends to do in hot vintages. Brix: 23.2 pH: 3.28, TA: 7.8 gr/liter Finished wine: However, periods of rain at the end of the season meant that 2007 was a year when it Alcohol 13.2%, pH: 3.57, TA: 5.7 gr/liter definitely made a difference to have well Barrel aged 12 months in French oak, 50% new drained soils, mature vines, and years of experience in the vineyard and the winery. The Bottled in October, 2008 crop was thinned three times, leaves were 149 Cases produced, pulled twice, and we were then able to wait through several rain events to pick when the Suggested Retail $50 fruit was fully mature.

Needs a year or two to soften. Better in 2018. Maturity 2018 Josh Raynolds - ‘Vinous’ 91 Points Bright red. Forward, spice-accented aromas of fresh red berries, cola and lavender are joined by mineral and allspice nuances that emerge with aeration. Sweet and incisive in the mouth, offering juicy raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a touch of smokiness. Finishes silky and very long, with repeating red fruit character; gentle tannins come in slowly to contribute grip.

    THE HEART OF BETHEL HEIGHTS VINEYARD IS PINOT NOIR. More than half the vineyard, over thirty acres, is planted to Pinot noir. The oldest vines, planted in 1977 and 1979, are the Pommard and Wädenswil clones. More recent plantings include Dijon clones 114, 115 and 777. Over the years the different slopes and soils of each block have asserted themselves in the character of the wines grown on them. Miles* Introduction In 1982, Oregon State University Extension Service was again asked to make a winegrape acreage survey in Oregon. Winegrape acreage is currently increasing dramatically and the Table Wine Research Advisory Board (TWRAB) is interested in keeping track of these changes. In 1981 Extension made a survey of acreages by county for both bearing and nonbearing vineyards. This 1982 survey asked for additional information as to the acreages currently being established and those planned for the near future. This report contains some comparisons between the 1981 and 1982 data. The data are not directly comparable because some of the vineyards reporting in 1982 are new or different from those reporting in 1981. The two-year comparisons are given to provide an indication of the changes taking place in the industry. While we used various methods to get names and addresses of vineyard operators to include in the survey, we didn't reach them all and some have not responded. However, it is our judgment that the numbers included here represent 80 percent or more of the established vineyard acreage. Acres Reported by Variety The 1982 survey shows a 31 percent (224 acre) increase in bearing acreage over 1981 and a 68 percent (351 acre) increase in nonbearing acreage. (See Table I) Of the 224 acre increase in bearing acres, 140 acres or 63 percent were in the three varieties of Pinot Noir, White Riesling and Chardonnay. Of the 351 acre increase in nonbearing acres, 314 acres or 89 percent were in these same three varieties.
