The Holy See WORDS OF CONDOLENCES OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI FOR THE DEATH OF CARD. JOZEF GLEMP To Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz Archbishop of Warsaw I learned with sorrow of the death of Cardinal Józef Glemp, Archbishop emeritus of Gniezno and of Warsaw, Primate of Poland. I join you, dear Brother, the Presbyterate and the faithful of the Church in Poland in the prayers of thanksgiving for the life and pastoral ministry of this praiseworthy minister of the Gospel. His episcopal motto, Caritati in iustitia — for charity in justice — accompanied him throughout his life and directed his way of thinking, evaluating, making choices, taking decisions and offering guidelines for pastoral action. He was a “just” man in the spirit of St Joseph, his Patron and the Patron of all those who in the biblical tradition could hear the voice of God addressing his call not only to them personally, but also to the communities to which they had been sent. This justice, full of humble adherence to God’s will, formed the basis of his deep love for God and for people. It was his light, inspiration and strength in the demanding ministry of steering the Church through an epoch in which important social and political transformations affected both Poland and Europe. Love of God and love of the Church, concern for the life and dignity of every man and woman made him an apostle of unity against division, of concord in the face of conflict. Thus the common construction of a happy future is founded on its joyful and painful experiences of the Church and of the people.

Azzurra Giorgi (March 13, 2013) After the resignation of Joseph Ratzinger, the Conclave that will lead to the election of a new Pope began in Vatican City. Here is the list of those who are most likely to become the new leader of the Catholic Church. After Joseph Ratzinger resigned as Pope Benedict XVI, there are great expectations of the one who will take his place. After weeks of waiting, the first day of the Conclave has arrived. Here below is the list of those who are most likely candidates for becoming the new Pope. ANGELO SCOLA [2]: Archbishop of Milan, 71 years old. Well esteemed by Ratzinger, who wanted him in the theological magazine 'Communio,' he comes from two dioceses, Milan and Venice, that gave five different Popes in the last century. He is very reluctant of taking on a label and he has an open look on modernity. Page 1 of 3 The Conclave Has Begun. Who Will Be the New Pope? Bearer of the Brazilian and Latin- american Episcopate, he claims a major role in the central government of the Church. He is in the Board of Supervisors of the Ior and also knows the Curia for working many years with the Congregation of Bishops. MARC OUELLET [4]: Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops, 68 years old.

This joy and hope moved me as well when the Congregation for Catholic Education published the Guidelines for the Study and Teaching of the Church’s Social Doctrine in the Formation of Priests in 1988. They clearly illustrated the order and the continuity of Catholic social doctrine in general and of the papal doctrinal statements in particular. These guidelines were also in a welcome way responsive to the pedagogical concerns of Catholic social doctrine. At this occasion in 1988, the idea came to me that it would be important for the Holy See if, besides the already existing scientific Pontifical Academies, such as the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, there would also be one for social sciences, because Catholic social doctrine is current as a social design recommendation for all parts of the world and important for the social sciences. The timeliness of Catholic social doctrine increased after the promulgation of these guidelines still further as, after 1988, a political tum emerged in Central and Eastern Europe with the end of Communism, which created an ideological and worldview vacuum which needed, and still needs, to be addressed. Since I knew that Fr.
