The Executive Summary (paragraph 1) of a report published by the Institute on Religion and Public Policy states: The status of Religious Freedom in Eritrea is atrocious. While a 1997 Constitution provides protections for freedom of religion and conscience, this Constitution has not been implemented. The country only recognizes 4 religious groups: the Eritrean Orthodox Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Eritrea, Islam, and the Roman Catholic Church. Members of unregistered religious groups face harassment, imprisonment, torture, and, in some cases, death at the hands of state authorities. Even members of registered religious groups face harassment, imprisonment, and interference from the government. The religious freedom situation in Eritrea is widely recognized by both governmental and non-government actors and agencies to be among the worst in the world. (Institute on Religion and Public Policy (2009) Religious Freedom in Eritrea, p.1) In a section titled Government Interference and Abuses of Registered Religious Groups (paragraph 8) this report states: The government interferes in the everyday workings of registered religious groups at the highest levels. The Eritrean Orthodox Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Eritrea, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Muslim community in Eritrea have all faced abuses and interference in their religious affairs at the hands of the government. De Simone 2012 Abstract In the mid-seventeenth century Nikon, Patriarch of Moscow, introduced a number of reforms to bring the Russian Orthodox Church into ritualistic and liturgical conformity with the Greek Orthodox Church. However, Nikon‘s reforms met staunch resistance from a number of clergy, led by figures such as the archpriest Avvakum and Bishop Pavel of Kolomna, as well as large portions of the general Russian population. Nikon‘s critics rejected the reforms on two key principles: that conformity with the Greek Church corrupted Russian Orthodoxy‘s spiritual purity and negated Russia‘s historical and Christian destiny as the Third Rome – the final capital of all Christendom before the End Times. Developed in the early sixteenth century, what became the Third Rome Doctrine proclaimed that Muscovite Russia inherited the political and spiritual legacy of the Roman Empire as passed from Constantinople. In the mind of Nikon‘s critics, the Doctrine proclaimed that Constantinople fell in 1453 due to God‘s displeasure with the Greeks. Therefore, to Nikon‘s critics introducing Greek rituals and liturgical reform was to invite the same heresies that led to the Greeks‘ downfall.

The cross decorates our homes, and for many of us it has even become a lovely piece of jewelry, something we proudly display. But it wasn’t always this way. The cross was once a sign of horror and shame, something that instilled fear and loathing into every heart. Crucifixion was the punishment the Roman Empire reserved for slaves, violent criminals, and those who rebelled against the Roman state. In the Old Testament, the Book of Deuteronomy says, “Cursed by God is anyone who hangs on a tree.” So imagine how difficult it was for the first Christians to preach the gospel of the crucified Christ. Crucifixion was the punishment for slaves, violent criminals, and political rebels. Jesus was crucified.
