    SAKIS ROUVAS "Sakis" Rouvas is a Greek musician, television and film artist, businessman, and former pole player who is one of the most commercially successful entertainers of all time in Greece and Cyprus. Beginning a career as a member of the national athletics team, Rouvas commenced a musical career in 1991 and became one of Greece's first pop performers. In the early 1990s after winning the Thessaloniki Song Festival, Rouvas became a dominant figure in Greek entertainment, gaining a mass fan base and being cited as a phenomenon, a first for Greek music. His sexualized image and live performances utilizing complex choreography and costumes have earned him fame. He and manager Elias Psinakis formed a famous partnership in Greek show business. Rouvas' increasing popularity was coupled with criticism of both professional choices and personal struggles, which damaged his public image and lead to a brief, relatively unsuccessful period in the mid 90s. After five commercially successful albums with PolyGram Greece, Rouvas signed with Minos EMI in 1998. Amongst Rouvas' achievements are multiple recognized awards –including six Arion Music Awards, and a World Music Award– number-one albums and singles that have all achieved certifications of gold or higher, and sales of an estimated two million records as of 2008, making him one of Greece's best-selling music artists in history. Its central claim is that the concept of the singing poet provided a crucial framing of the field of popular music in both countries and led to a reassessment of the links between literature and popular culture. The term singing poets is coined in order to regroup artists who used poetic texts for their songs or adopted a poetic persona themselves, but also accounts for the reception of a particular style of popular music in the period and the countries under discussion as poetic/intellectual song. Adopting a Cultural Studies approach, this thesis thus outlines the role played by the prestige of literary institutions and an idealized view of oral poetry in the conceptualization ofhigh-popular music.

Brief presentation of the element of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)[1] Name: Rebetiko Other name(s): Rebetika, rembetiko, rembetika Identification and definition[2]: A form of musical and cultural expression directly linked to word and dance, which spread gradually among the urban working-class populations during the first decades of the 20th century. In the post-war era it evolved into a type of music with a widespread popularity, functioning as a strong symbol of identity and ideology for the Greek popular music tradition. ICH domain[3]: □ Oral traditions and expressions Rebetiko, especially during the first decades of its creation, was distinguished by aspects such as collectivity, anonymous creation, and oral diffusion, which also determine the direct “folk” character of the form. Its performance and many of its characteristic features (poetical and musical) are connected with the folk song tradition, in particular that of the Greeks of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands. At the same time, it is in a dynamic dialogue with the musical traditions of the other peoples residing in the multinational and multicultural urban centres of the Ottoman Empire (Turks, Jews, Armenians, Balkan peoples, Levantines), creatively exchanging and adapting many musical elements. With the appearance of gramophone records and the mass media, particularly in the 1930s, rebetiko became even more widespread, without its daily “live” performance in tavernas, clubs, venues and ceasing even today. □ Performing arts The song (poetic text), music and dance, in the form of the traditional unified triptych of “word-melody-movement”, are the structural elements of rebetiko that are transmitted from generation to generation.
