He was a prominent figure in the artistic movement Mir Iskusstva and contributed to the Ballets Russes. “Vasilisa the Beautiful and Baba Yaga” is a traditional Russian fairytale retold by Alexander Afanasyev and translated into English by Post Wheeler in the 2017 edition published by Planet Books. In the story, Vasilisa is given a magic doll by her mother as she is dying. She tells Vasilisa to give the little doll some food and drink and then it will help her solve whatever problem she’s facing.Indeed, the doll saves her over and over, even when faced with the ogre Baba Yaga, who threatens to eat Vasilisa if she doesn’t do everything she’s told. -

Jack Haney's Introduction to the Russian Folktale is the first volume of an ambi- tious project to translate anew Aleksandr Afans'ev's Russkie narodnye skazki. To help the North American reader cross over into the world of the Russian tale, it discusses the collecting and publication of Russian tales, performers and performance, tale con- tent, and the probable mythic and ritual basis of tales. Haney performs an especially valuable service by concentrating on the Russian perspective on this genre. Folktales are ubiquitous and one of the richest and most varied narrative types. They can be, and have been, approached in many ways. The Russian approach is probably the least familiar to the North American reader and the one most in need of explication. Folktales tend to be associated with the past, either the historical past or the past of an individual, namely childhood. In the West, Bruno Bettelheim's Uses of Enchant- ment and the works of Marie von Franz have encouraged us to look at tales in the con- text of human development, to see parallels between the psychological growth of the child and the adventures of tale heroes. More recently, Jack Zipes and Marina Wamer have drawn our attention to the political dimension of tales, the messages beneath the surface and even the commercial intent behind the folktale versions produced in film studios. -

Expression of Language Etiquette in Russian Folktales Ildiko Csajbok-Twerefou, Department of Modern Languages, University of Ghana Yuriy Dzyadyk, Department of Modern Languages, University of Ghana Abstract Using different methods of analysis, this paper examines maxims of language etiquette, such as request, address forms and greetings in selected Russian folktales. Though language etiquette as a segment of politeness has its standards, it is dynamic, so it varies due to political, social, economic or cultural factors. Yet, folktales as a source of customs and beliefs, constitute an integral part of cultural heritage, serve as a means of upbringing, and play an important role in the linguistic development of a person. In Russia, expressions of politeness found in folktales are applied in accordance with the current requirements of Russian society. Keywords: Politeness, folklore, culture, language. Introduction Culture, traditions, language, and folklore are strongly related to each other and vary from nation to nation. Knowing the culture of a society, one may be acquainted with the traditions, language and folklore of that particular society, since culture encompasses all of them. The word folklore can be translated as “knowledge of people”. When referring to folklore in general, one may think about different genres, such as music, dance, tales, arts, crafts, etc. Usually, folklore is characterized by its collectiveness, since it is made on the earlier established traditions and standards of a society, taking into consideration its requirements and perceptions (Keszeg 2008). On the other hand, folklore is a piece of art, which exists not only by means of verbal units, but it often includes gestures, theatrical elements, dancing and singing. -

The main aim of the meinoirists is to give their interpretation of the past. Despite the personal insight that these works provide on Soviet history, Western academics have not studied them in any detail. The principal aim of this paper is to prove Soviet political memoir’s importance as a research tool. The tight link between politics and literature characterizes the nature of Soviet political memoir. All forms of Soviet literature had to reform their brand of writing as the Kremlin’s policies changed from Stalin’s ruthless reign to Gorbachev’s period of openness. -

I analyze different visual and narrative strategies developed by the directors of youth cinema during the Brezhnev period as mechanisms for circumventing ideological control over cultural production. -

Clarifying the functions of a fairy story as a carrier for cultural memory and intuitive normative knowledge of the humankind, the author raises the problem of folk ideals in the historical and cultural retrospective reflected in fairy tales, including the age of post-industrial network information society, outlines the framework for the involvement of fairy tale in life design, formulates the hypothesis of the nature of fairy tale indifference to the borderline between life and death.
