Panelist Biographies

Dr. Deme Hill, Deputy Director of Housing, City of Stockton San Diego Continuing Education Alumna

Dr. Deme Hill is long-term advocate to the government and social service system and has served our American for more than 20+ years, with expertise in juvenile justice, , and child welfare. Dr. Hill is a first-generation college graduate - completing more than 15 years of education. She holds an AS in Healthcare, BS in , MA in and Doctorate in from California Baptist University.

Dr. Hill is currently the Deputy Director of Housing for the City of Stockton and provides independent consulting to organizations on state and federal special projects. Dr. Hill is also a Commissioner for the San Diego Juvenile Justice Commission, appointed by the State of California.

As an African American woman and mother of four young Black men she was once a continuing education student struggling to graduate high school on time. She was involved in the child welfare and justice system by the age of 13. Her teachers and mentors inspired her to do better and get an education.

Dr. Ricky Pope, Psychologist, San Diego State University (SDSU) San Diego Mesa College Alumnus

Dr. Ricky Pope received a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University in 2018. As a first-generation student, his studies began at San Diego Mesa College, where he benefited from TRIO Student Support Services. He was President of the BSU, a member of Phi Beta, and worked as a Peer Ambassador. He earned an Associate’s degree in Transfer Studies and transferred to SDSU, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. He now provides therapeutic services at Counseling and Psychological Services to SDSU college students. Dr. Pope takes pleasure in assisting transfer students to navigate college and persist toward degree completion. His general clinical interests involve working with emerging adults, racial and ethnic identity concerns, treatment of depression and anxiety, men’s issues, and group psychotherapy. His research interests involve critical considerations of racism and equity in education, service delivery to underrepresented , and the study of organizational structures and participant outcomes in the justice setting. David Resilien, Strategy Manager, Riiid Labs San Diego Miramar College Alumnus

David Resilien was born in Miami, Florida, and raised in Brooklyn, . After graduating from high school, he joined the Marine Corps primarily for their education benefits. He used these benefits to achieve his Associate's at San Diego Miramar College, and his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of California San Diego. Mr. Resilien has worked as a consultant with CACI International and a Project Management Consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton. He currently works as a Strategy Manager for Riiid Labs, an artificial intelligence platform that provides automated tutoring and helps students achieve their educational goals in the most efficient way. This job appealed to Mr. Resilien because part of Riiid's mission is to reduce educational inequality. Education has played a significant role in Mr. Resilien's personal and professional development, and he looks forward to helping others maximize their educational opportunities.

Dr. Nesha Savage, Dean of Student Development and Matriculation and Personal Growth, San Diego City College

Dr. Nesha Savage currently serves as the Dean of Student Development and Matriculation and Personal Growth at San Diego City College (City). Previously, she served as the Chair of the Counseling Department and Personal Growth at City for four years. During her tenure as a student services college employee, she served as the Director of TRIO Student Support Services Program, and Coordinator for the First-Year Experience Program. Additionally, Dr. Savage is the founder of the Hermanos Unidos-Brothers United (HUBU) Program that was designed to improve the outcomes of men of color. Dr. Savage co-authored a grant proposal with Dr’s. Frank Harris and Luke Wood, and the funding was used to a program to improve the outcomes of formerly incarcerated men of color. Dr. Savage earned her Doctorate in Educational for Community Colleges, Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Multicultural Counseling, and Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from San Diego State University. She was awarded an Associate’s degree in Liberal Studies from Santa Ana College.

Michael Taylor, Archaeologist and President, NWB Environmental Services, LLC San Diego City College Alumnus

Michael Taylor is an Archaeologist and President of NWB Environmental Services, LLC, a cultural management firm specializing in an array of archaeological services, including FAA compliant aerial services using drones. Mr. Taylor is a military veteran of the Marine Corps infantry after 13½ years of honorable service. He is an alumnus of San Diego City College with an Associate's degree in Anthropology and a Certificate in Archaeology, and an alumnus of Columbia University in the City of New York with a degree in Anthropological Archaeology.

He serves on the Board of Directors for The Old Globe Theatre, the 5th largest regional theatre in the United States. He is also the Host, Director, and Executive Producer of Theatre Corner (http://theatre- corner.com), a theatre interview series created as an ongoing effort to increase more diverse interest and involvement in the national theatre scene. Through the show, he spotlights Black actors, playwrights, directors, and other theatre and film professionals. Deon Winters, Cook, Top Golf San Diego Continuing Education and San Diego Mesa College Alumnus

Deon Winters wanted to cook his whole life and that decision is what saved him from the criminal justice system. He completed the Culinary Arts Certificate Program at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), located just a few miles away from his in Lincoln . Mr. Winters completed SDCE’s 36- week Culinary Arts Career Training Program that emphasizes the basic principles of , theory, food prep, safe food handling and pastry making. Students practice developing menus and managing food costs to gain a better understanding of the restaurant business. Currently, Mr. Winters lives in Glendale, Arizona, and works for Top Golf as a Cook. Winters decided to relocate to Arizona soon after the unfortunate passing of his grandmother due to COVID-19. His future ambitions are to expand his skills as a Cook and to share his story to serve as an example to many who are finding their way.

Dr. Abdimalik Buul, Assistant Professor in Counseling, Transfer Center Director, San Diego City College

Abdimalik Buul, Ed.D. is an award-winning professor, antiracist activist, progressive practitioner, and emancipatory educator. Dr. Buul is a Professor and Transfer Center Director in the Counseling Department at San Diego City College. Dr. Buul is also a Lecturer at San Diego State University where he teaches Restorative Practices and Conflict Transformation to students in the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Mental Recovery and Trauma-Informed Care Master’s program. He serves as a Taskforce Member on the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) Equity Diversity and Action Committee. As an active community leader, he serves on several boards including President for Markaz al Madina, the Somali Community of San Diego, the United Taxi Drivers Union in San Diego, and the African American Male and Educational Network and Development (A2MEND) organization.
