In a valiant effort to protect your privacy and lessen the amount of unwanted mail and email you receive, you have been bombarded for months with both – from all sorts of organisations imploring you to ‘opt-in’ and ‘keep in touch’ or just telling you of a replacement ‘Privacy Policy’ which, like me, you probably didn’t read so have no real idea whether you have opted in, out, or to shake it all about. Either way, it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference to the unwanted stuff, or just means you miss getting some of the things you do want (because you forgot to reply or ticked the wrong box). I have been threatening to join in for a couple of months now, but it has been so difficult to actually work out what, as a church, we needed to do and ask, that it is only at the last minute we have enough information to hope we’re doing it properly. With this edition of The Link (and possibly through a couple of other ways over the coming days) you will find a letter explaining what sort of information we hold about people as a church, why we hold it, how we use it etc. We are keen to protect your privacy and personal data – and always have been – but it is a good exercise to work out whether we can take even greater care of this: and we certainly can and will. However, we also want to fulfil our role as your Parish Church to serve and care for you, which requires communication and a certain amount of personal information to allow for this. I hope we can also do this better in the future, but we need your help and agreement. So you will also find enclosed a form, which you are invited to complete and return to me, which seeks information that we may not currently have or hold. I would be delighted to have an idea of everyone in the parish, so that I can think about you when I pray for God’s blessing on this place. I would like to be able to keep people better informed of activities and events which might be of particular interest or relevance. At the heart of the GDPR ethos is that people should have the right to be forgotten. Sadly, I suspect that, over the years, the church has been fairly good at forgetting people. My desire is that you should also have the right to be remembered. Will you allow me that privilege? Thank you. NEXT MEETING: MU are meeting next on Thursday, 14 June, 1:30pm at 11 Rounds Hill, Kenilworth. Our discussion will be on the theme of Reconciliation, followed by looking forward and planning for our MU Branch. THY KINGDOM COME Once again, in 2018 Mothers’ Union has been proud to be involved with Thy Kingdom Come - the call to prayer. As thousands of prayer events took place across the world, Mothers’ Union organised a special service in Coventry Cathedral and members around the world could join in, as it was streamed live on the MU website. The service featured the Birmingham Community Gospel Choir as well as MU Worldwide President, Lynne Tembey, and Chief Executive, Bev Jullien, and a special dance was created by the MU Birmingham Community Development Co- ordinator, Sandra Golding. This year the service was especially symbolic for Mothers’ Union because of its work and focus on reconciliation, locally, nationally and globally. Coventry Cathedral, the world leader in Christian-based Reconciliation with a global network of 200 Christian reconciling organisations connected to both it and one another via the Community of the Cross of Nails, will have Worldwide MU joining this network later in 2018, so a Cross of Nails was blessed as part of the service. Prayer God of peace, and God of reconciliation We ask for your peace and reconciliation to start with us today so that we may reach out to others with love and compassion. Help the leaders of the nations to seek peace and reconciliation with each other, and unite us as one family of God to your glory, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The event was well attended and, despite the billed speaker, David Barber, Head of Development at Council, being unable to attend, his two deputies, Philip Clarke and Gary Fisher spoke instead, giving an overview of their roles within Development at WDC and how the department is dealing with the unprecedented rate of growth required in the District. The speakers took questions from the audience, which, understandably centred around the Neighbourhood Plan, which was due to go to referendum two days later. After the speakers had answered questions, there was a brief open forum before the meeting was closed and refreshments were served. Draft minutes of the event are available on the Parish Council website at www.leekwootton.org.uk/your-parish/annual-parish-assembly NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN REFERENDUM Representatives of the Parish Council attended the referendum count on 3 May 2018. The result was as follows: 365 votes (107 postal/258 polling station) 46% turnout Yes = 347, No = 17, 1 blank paper 95% ‘Yes’ vote The result is available here: www.warwickdc.gov.uk/info/20596/elections/1106/ neighbourhood_plans_referendums/2 The Council was pleased with the excellent turnout (the best turnout for NP referendums in Warwick District so far) and the positive result, which gives it and the District Council a clear mandate to use the Plan when considering future planning in the parish. The Council is grateful to all who have helped produce the Plan during its 5-year development and all who turned out to support it. The WDC Adoption Statement is available to view on the Parish Council’s website at www.leekwootton.org.uk/neighbourhood-plan ANNUAL MEETING OF THE PARISH COUNCIL The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council was held on Tuesday, 8 May 2018, at All Saints’ Church. This meeting is a statutory requirement and is the equivalent of an AGM for the Council. The first order of business was to elect a Chairman and a Vice-Chairman for the forthcoming year and Colin Smith was duly re-elected to the

7 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2018 role of Chairman and Richard Coates to the role of Vice-Chairman. The Council’s Standing Orders and Financial Regulations were also updated and approved. The rest of the meeting followed the format of an ordinary meeting and discussions included: EMERGENCY EXERCISE AT WOODCOTE Representatives from & West Mercia Police and the RAF attended the meeting to inform the Council that a major exercise for ‘aircraft post-crash management’ will be taking place in the grounds of Woodcote on 5/6 June. They explained the purpose of the exercise, who will be involved and steps that have been taken to minimise impact of the exercise on residents of Leek Wootton. More information is available on page 9. TRAFFIC SURVEY The Council has had a good response to its traffic survey with over 50 responses so far. The relative popularity of the proposed traffic calming measures is very clear and there have been a number of new ideas that have come from the comments received. The survey will close on 31 May, but this is an active issue that the Council will returning to in the future and it is likely that the survey will be reopened. REPLACEMENT BINS – PHASE 2 The Council has been successful in applying for another grant to continue to improve the litter bins in Leek Wootton. It will be replacing the bins at both bus stops as well as, due to the continuing problem with collections and overflowing, replacing the bin at the top of the recreation ground with a larger one. The Parish Council will be undertaking replacement work during the summer. There is also to be a new grit bin installed in Croft Road. NEXT MEETING The new regular meeting date for the Parish Council is the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is an ordinary meeting and will be on Tuesday, 5 June, at Leek Wootton Village Hall. Minutes of all Parish Council meetings, when signed, are published on the website at www.leekwootton.org.uk. Any local issues can always be raised at meetings under Public Question Time or by contacting any of the Parish Councillors or the Clerk, details of whom are listed on all noticeboards, the Parish Council website, in the Parish Directory and the Bulletin. STOP PRESS: Village Hall Car Park development plans approved! This week the Parish Council and the Trustees of the Recreation Ground received the welcome news that Warwick District Council has approved plans for the refurbishment of the Village Hall car park. Subject to a few landscape conservation issues, particularly around the large beech trees, work can now begin on raising funds and obtaining quotes from contractors to do the work. We have three years in which to complete the project, which hopefully will result in a facility that more than meets the growth needs of our community. Richard Coates, Chairman of the Trustees of Leek Wootton War Memorial Recreation Ground 8 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2018 5-6 June Exercise Flying Turpin The Royal Air Force has a duty to respond promptly and effectively in the unlikely event of a military aircraft accident anywhere within the United Kingdom. The intent is to fully support the local Emergency Services and multi-agency partners in bringing relief and support to the community affected by the incident. In such an event, using an operational process known as Aircraft Post Crash Management (APCM), the Royal Air Force would deploy specialised personnel and capabilities to ensure the safety of the incident site, facilitate a thorough investigation of the cause and subsequently a full remediation of the site in conjunction with the Environment Agency. To ensure this response, certain RAF stations have a regional APCM responsibility, with RAF Wittering near Peterborough responsible for certain Midlands counties, including Warwickshire. Thankfully, incidents of this nature are now a rare occurrence for the military, but even so a comprehensive training and exercising regime is mandated for APCM to ensure its continuing effectiveness, especially as such activities will inevitably involve both military and civilian response agencies. It is therefore vital that all relevant stakeholders fully understand each other’s capabilities and procedures. To facilitate such a training requirement and mutual understanding between partners, a live APCM exercise is held every two years within each region. Consequently, Exercise Flying Turpin will take place on 5 and 6 June within the grounds of the former Police Headquarters in Leek Wootton, by kind permission of the Warwickshire Police Chief Constable, Martin Jelley QPM. Rest assured that extensive planning over the last year has taken place to ensure that not only will the exercise offer excellent training value for the Military, emergency services, Environment Agency and local authority partners, but it has been designed to minimise any impact on the local community for the duration. As the RAF Regional Liaison Officer for West Midlands I thank you in advance for your patience as we conduct the exercise, and should you have any queries please contact myself, Wing Commander Alex Stylianides, on 07771 730553.

14 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2018 www.leekwoottonwi.co.uk LEEK WOOTTON WI President : Genny Wilson t : 690701 2018 National WI Resolution is ‘Mental Health Matters’ Mental health is still a subject touched by stigma, yet statistics show that each year 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem, and almost all (9 out of 10) will face some kind of discrimination from friends, family and even at work. So, this year WI members around the UK voted for ‘Mental Health Matters’ from six different proposed resolutions. The proposer for ‘Mental Health Matters’ is concerned that mental health illness can affect any sector of society, but there still exists a stigma around talking about this illness. “Mental health matters as much as physical health. The NFWI urges all WI members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health, and to take action to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health issues as much as health issues, and to lobby government for better support for mental health.” The numbers reveal the extent of this issue; there are some 91 million working days lost through mental ill health, at the cost of £34.9 billion. The cost to the NHS is £105.20 billion (NHS 2016), with the current spend mostly on crisis, rather than preventative and support. The NHS has 15,000 less beds than ten years ago, with an estimated 20,000 extra mental health staff needed by 2020. The NHS is estimated to be losing 10,000 mental health staff every year. There has been some action taken by Government, including in January 2016 the Prime Minister announced investment of £290 million in specialist care for new mums, £247 million in mental health services in hospital emergency departments, and £400 million in community-based services. In July 2017 the Health Secretary announced plans to create 21,000 new posts in mental health services. Initiatives such as ‘Time to Talk’ and ‘Heads Together’, along with local and national campaigns, are helping to break down the stigma associated with mental health, to encourage young people and adults to talk about their experiences. Talking about mental ill health may not in itself solve mental ill health, but it may enable those who suffer in silence to take steps to seek help. Each and every one of us can help make that first step easier, because that first step forward to get help is maybe one step closer to getting treatment and, hopefully, one step closer to recovery. 15 ADVERTISING

We were both children of the first families to move into The Hamlet estate in the mid to late 1970s and reminisced about how many of us kids there were and how many of us played out together, or went to School, Youth Club or dancing together. We also Leek Wootton’s Royal Wedding Party, 1981 remembered many of the old faces from the community. Together we set up a Facebook group called, I was a kid in Leek Wootton in the 70s & 80s and found more of our contemporaries and some younger and some older. Some parents joined too and the group now has 126 members and, with my history hat on, I realised that since WWII there have been phases of building in the community that have brought in families again and again, e.g. the Police families in the 1950s/60s. Having had a couple of failed informal attempts at getting some of the members together, this year I decided to go for it and have hired the Village Hall on the evening of the Summer Fête for a casual reunion. I will bring some of my own family and the history group's photos and perhaps a TV to show some www.christianaid.org.uk videos. 25 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2018 www.ecochurch.org.uk ECO CHURCH Hedgehogs It has been estimated that there are less than 1 million hedgehogs in the UK today compared with an estimated 36 million in the 1950s. This worrying trend is likely down to a combination of potential factors. Changing agricultural practices have reduced suitable habitat in the countryside and may have depleted numbers of hedgehog’s invertebrate prey. The fall in hedgehog numbers has also coincided with an increase in badgers - the species’ only significant predator - although this is unlikely to have driven the decline alone. In built-up areas, there are concerns that gardens are becoming less suitable for hedgehogs. A growing preference for low-maintenance gardens with little plant cover deprives hedgehogs of both food and shelter. Hedgehogs can roam over a kilometre each night and fences and walls can make it difficult for them to move between gardens and so may force them to cross roads more often – thousands of hogs are killed by cars each year. Hedgehogs are a gardener’s friend, as they eat snails, slugs and insects. So, what can we do to help them? Make a hedgehog a home Leave areas of the garden ‘wild’, with piles of leaf litter and logs. These are an attractive nest as well as a home for the invertebrates (slugs, beetles) that hedgehogs like to eat. Providing an artificial home can be as simple as placing a piece of board against a wall, see the internet for more ideas or buy a purpose built hedgehog home. Hedgehog-friendly gardens • Ensure ponds have a ramp or sloping sides to enable them to get out if they fall in. • Cover drains and holes. • Cover swimming pools overnight and when not in use. • Check for hedgehogs before using strimmers or mowers, particularly under hedges where animals may rest. • Check compost heaps for nesting hogs before forking over. • Build bonfires as close to time of lighting as possible and check thoroughly before lighting. • Remove sports or fruit netting when not in use to prevent hedgehogs

26 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2018 becoming entangled, and getting injured. Keep the net tight while in use. • Don't use slug pellets as they can poison hedgehogs and should only be used as a last resort. Instead try using one of many ‘natural’ alternatives, like sprinkling crushed eggshells or coffee grounds around the plants you need to protect or using nematodes. If you have to use slug pellets, ensure they are covered and inaccessible to hedgehogs. • Ensure your garden is connected to neighbouring ones with gaps under fences or holes at least 13cm square (about 5"). Feeding hedgehogs Food and fresh water will encourage hedgehogs to return. Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Specialist hedgehog food is also recommended and can be bought from wildlife food suppliers. Never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea; instead provide plain, fresh water in a shallow bowl. Seeing Hedgehogs If you go out in the garden at night and hear rustling in the flower beds or under hedges, the chances are it is a hedgehog. Keep very quiet while having a closer look. Cover a torch with a red cellophane to lessen its visibility to wildlife. If you see a hedgehog, alive or dead report it on the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust website. Drive carefully at night and keep a look out for hedgehogs.

Hopefully the asparagus season is still with us! I tend to like vegetables and fruit that have a short season. As they come, you can taste the full flavour - in other words, asparagus whole, strawberries with cream! So, try this easy supper dish: Asparagus Tart INGREDIENTS • 250g (12oz) puff pastry- I tend to buy this ready made from the chilled food section of the local supermarket. If you can get one already rolled into a sheet, even better! • 1 tblsp green pesto • 500g (24oz) of flavoursome sliced tomatoes, you may have some ready in your greenhouse • 250g (12oz) soft cheese in a roll, such as mozzarella, goats cheese or any other mild flavoured cheese that you can slice • 250g (12oz) asparagus - young, trimmed spears • Black pepper • Fresh Basil leaves METHOD 1. You will need a hot oven, 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. 2. Line a baking tray with baking/greaseproof paper. 3. Roll out the pastry to fit onto the tray or unroll the sheet. 4. Carefully trim the edges to release the layers whilst cooking; keep the off cuts. 5. Score an inch-wide border around the pastry with a sharp knife, taking care not to cut through; this gives a raised edge to the finished tart. 6. Prick the base in several places with a fork; this will stop it rising too much whist its cooking. 7. Spread the pesto onto the pastry and then arrange the tomatoes, cheese slices and asparagus over the top - make it even. 8. Finish with oodles of black pepper and crushed Basil leaves. 9. Bake for 20-25 minutes. 10. Serve hot or cold, with a crunchy coleslaw and a green salad. The off-cuts of pastry can be rolled into a wheel, sprinkled with brown sugar and nuts and cooked alongside the tart for 10-15 minutes - makes an easy pudding to serve with ice-cream. Enjoy! 30 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2018 A recipe from The Vicarage Kitchen

By popular demand from ‘customers’ at Church Teas, Nicola agreed to share with us her recipe for Rhubarb Cake, which she sourced from the internet. Rhubarb Cake Preparation time 15 minutes / Cooking time 45-50 minutes / Serves 8 INGREDIENTS: • 8oz (225g) self-raising flour • pinch of salt • 4oz (100g) butter or ‘margarine’ • 12oz (350g) chopped rhubarb (see note below) • 4oz (100g) caster sugar • 2 large eggs, slightly beaten, just to break up the yolks • 1 tblsp demerara sugar (optional) METHOD: Grease, line and grease again a 1lb loaf tin. Chop the rhubarb. Use quite thin rhubarb (maximum 20mm diameter) and chop it into slices about 10 to 15mm wide. Dark pink rhubarb looks the best. If using thicker stalks of rhubarb, slice longways first and cooking timing might need to be longer. Pre-heat oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4 or 5 (depending on your oven). Add the salt to the flour, then rub the fat into the flour in the usual way to resemble fine bread crumbs. Mix in the caster sugar, chopped rhubarb (raw) and finally the beaten eggs. The mixture will be fairly dry and heavy for a cake mixture. Put the mixture into the loaf tin, level it out and sprinkle the top with the Demerara sugar. Bake in the oven for about 45-50 minutes, until it looks done (i.e. light brown and cake coloured). To test, press the top lightly with your finger and if it springs back it is done, or you can test with a skewer. If the top gets brown before the cake is cooked through, cover the top loosely with foil to stop it from burning. Leave the cake in the tin for 15-30 minutes to firm up before turning it out carefully onto a wire cooling rack. At this stage it will probably be a bit fragile and wobbly. It is nice served warm as a pudding, but the following day it will have cooled. Review comment by Mrs Stubbs to the River Cottage Community, 7 April 2011: “More of a pudding than a cake, this is a delicious, moist and easy treat using new season rhubarb.”

You are welcome to come along on Sunday, 3 June to: All Saints’ Church Summer Teas Hosted this month by the Bell Ringers (see page 17) from 2:30 to 5:00pm

London to Brighton Bike Ride 2018 Since I retired a few years ago, I have had three operations on my wrist and both hands and last November I had a bigger operation on my shoulder. I have now got to the stage where I can grip handlebars and move my right arm more easily so, as a personal challenge, I have entered the London to Brighton Bike Ride 2018 on Sunday, 17 June. This is for The British Heart Foundation so, as the day is getting closer, it is time I got around to finding some sponsorship. If anyone would like to contribute, I can be found at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/elizabeth-owen-evans Many thanks. A big, big thank you to everyone who joined in the fun and especially to Norman for organising the event. Altogether Ian has raised £4,437, with some promised donations still to come, all for the charity which is for anyone affected by blood cancer. 34 LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2018 www.womenstour.co.uk OVO ENERGY WOMEN’S TOUR Friday, 15 June For the third year in a row, the OVO Energy Women’s Tour is set to come through Leek Wootton and Guy’s Cliffe on Friday, 15 June. An OVO Energy Women’s Tour first: Stage Three of the 2018 race will retrace virtually the entire route used in the respective stage 12 months ago, a 151- kilometre leg from Atherstone to Royal Leamington Spa. Once again, the Warwickshire stage of the race will be the longest of the entire tour, although the distance did little to deter attacks in 2017. Only half the field made it to Royal Leamington Spa in the same time as winner Chloe Hosking did last year, making this a crucial stage in the fight for the OVO Energy Green Jersey. This will be the third time Atherstone has hosted a stage start, having also welcomed the OVO Energy Women’s Tour on day three of the 2016 race. The race starts in Atherstone at 10:00am and will arrive in Kenilworth for a sprint down the Warwick Road at 10:57. From there the peloton will make its way through Leek Wootton (approx 11:00am) and Guy’s Cliffe (approx 11:03am). The finish line this year will be in Newbold Terrace at approx 13:57 and there is set to be a festival atmosphere, with a special event zone being created at the finish line, with attractions in to entertain visitors. Newbold Terrace will be closed off during the day and other roads that will be closed or have limited access during the day include Newbold Street and Hamilton Terrace. Football Club hosts it’s annual awards … At the end of May the Football Club hosted its annual awards night with Club President ,Tony O’Toole as Guest of Honour. All of the teams were present and all had a great evening’s entertainment. The top award of the night; the Club Player of the Season, went to Under 11s Bob Kibarabara who had another exceptional year in defence for the Midland Junior team. The Clubman of the Year award; the Tony O’Toole cup, was presented to Alex Ford of the Under 13s, who has been a fantastic team player not just over this season but for a number of seasons. The Team of the Year award was a tough one as a number of our teams have won silverware this season, but the Under 10s Sunday won both Coventry Cups this season and generally were excellent throughout. The final Club award went to Vince Bradley, who won the Coach of the Year for his outstanding contribution to the Club and first class coaching. Meanwhile the tournament season continues and congratulations to the Under 10s Colts who became the Club’s first ever winners of the Kenilworth Wardens Tournament. The tournament season has only just started so hopefully we will get some more trophies for our cabinet over the coming weeks. At the Parish Summer Fête the Club is hosting an open football competition with two age groups, the Under 8s & below and the Under 10s & below. If you have a child who would like to play just come along on the day and have a series of games. Finally, we are looking for new players for next season so, if you would like to come along, please contact Club Chairman Paul Baigent on 07535 736556 who will provide further details.

Fraud against the elderly and vulnerable Forwarded from the Leicestershire area; a method of fraud is being conducted against elderly and vulnerable people involving a male caller, described by various victims as having an Indian or foreign accent, contacting people, knowing their name, address and bank in order to try to get them to withdraw money from the bank. A couple of variations to the method have been observed: the victim being persuaded to transfer their money into the suspect’s bank account; the scam initially began as a BT/TalkTalk representative rather than from the Police/Bank. Please be aware of such scams: Don’t become a victim and report anything suspicious to the Police (t: 101)
