In a valiant effort to protect your privacy and lessen the amount of unwanted mail and email you receive, you have been bombarded for months with both – from all sorts of organisations imploring you to ‘opt-in’ and ‘keep in touch’ or just telling you of a replacement ‘Privacy Policy’ which, like me, you probably didn’t read so have no real idea whether you have opted in, out, or to shake it all about. Either way, it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference to the unwanted stuff, or just means you miss getting some of the things you do want (because you forgot to reply or ticked the wrong box). I have been threatening to join in for a couple of months now, but it has been so difficult to actually work out what, as a church, we needed to do and ask, that it is only at the last minute we have enough information to hope we’re doing it properly. With this edition of The Link (and possibly through a couple of other ways over the coming days) you will find a letter explaining what sort of information we hold about people as a church, why we hold it, how we use it etc. We are keen to protect your privacy and personal data – and always have been – but it is a good exercise to work out whether we can take even greater care of this: and we certainly can and will. However, we also want to fulfil our role as your Parish Church to serve and care for you, which requires communication and a certain amount of personal information to allow for this. I hope we can also do this better in the future, but we need your help and agreement. So you will also find enclosed a form, which you are invited to complete and return to me, which seeks information that we may not currently have or hold. I would be delighted to have an idea of everyone in the parish, so that I can think about you when I pray for God’s blessing on this place. I would like to be able to keep people better informed of activities and events which might be of particular interest or relevance. At the heart of the GDPR ethos is that people should have the right to be forgotten. Sadly, I suspect that, over the years, the church has been fairly good at forgetting people. My desire is that you should also have the right to be remembered. Will you allow me that privilege? Thank you. Our discussion will be on the theme of Reconciliation, followed by looking forward and planning for our MU Branch. THY KINGDOM COME Once again, in 2018 Mothers’ Union has been proud to be involved with Thy Kingdom Come - the call to prayer. As thousands of prayer events took place across the world, Mothers’ Union organised a special service in Coventry Cathedral and members around the world could join in, as it was streamed live on the MU website. The service featured the Birmingham Community Gospel Choir as well as MU Worldwide President, Lynne Tembey, and Chief Executive, Bev Jullien, and a special dance was created by the MU Birmingham Community Development Co- ordinator, Sandra Golding. This year the service was especially symbolic for Mothers’ Union because of its work and focus on reconciliation, locally, nationally and globally. Coventry Cathedral, the world leader in Christian-based Reconciliation with a global network of 200 Christian reconciling organisations connected to both it and one another via the Community of the Cross of Nails, will have Worldwide MU joining this network later in 2018, so a Cross of Nails was blessed as part of the service. Prayer God of peace, and God of reconciliation We ask for your peace and reconciliation to start with us today so that we may reach out to others with love and compassion. Help the leaders of the nations to seek peace and reconciliation with each other, and unite us as one family of God to your glory, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
