MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. I have mixed feelings about the post office. They offer a world quality service in terms of efficiency and reliability but have many less that wondrous options when it comes to business requirements. One is that they are the only postal authority in the world which charges on both weight and thickness. As you will know I send out things in a padded envelope. Two cds side by side fit through their “slot”, and go at a lower rate. More than that do not and so we have to pay a lot more. The more you send the less it should be per unit, but not with Australia post. So rates now are: 1 cd $2 2 cds $3 3 or 4 $7. Sometimes you can get five sent for this. Anyway, we can assure you the best option will be chosen. --------------------------------------- This has been a little while coming but delays have been due to something very favourable. My beautiful daughter and her husband welcomed their first into the world and yes I am a grandfather for the first time. Leo was born 7th October and weighed 8lb 5 oz. So apologies for the delay. Sure you will understand!! Again a whopper newsletter follows. Some of the favourites are back with new albums and the BEAR FAMILY releases are some of the best in recent memory with the first Bill Anderson box set ready to roll.

    02-233 Ch16 9/19/02 2:27 PM Page 255 16 Lubbock on Everything: The Evocation of Place in the Music of West Texas Blake Gumprecht The role of landscape and the importance of place in literature, poetry, the visual arts, even cinema and television are well established and have been widely discussed and written about. Think of Faulkner’s Mississippi, the New England poetry of Robert Frost, the regionalist paintings of John Steuart Curry, or, in a contemporary sense, the early movies of Barry Levinson, with their rich depictions of Baltimore. There are countless other examples. Texas could be considered a protagonist in the novels of Larry McMurtry. The American Southwest is central to the art of Georgia O’Keeffe. New York City acts as far more than just a setting for the films of Woody Allen. The creative arts have helped shape our views of such places, and the study of works in which particular places figure prominently can help us better understand those places and human perceptions of them.1 Place can also be important to music, yet this has been largely overlooked by scholars. The literature on the subject, in fact, is nearly nonexistent. A sim- ple search of a national library database, for example, retrieved 295 records under the subject heading “landscape in literature” and more than 1,000 un- der the heading “landscape in art,” but a similar search using the phrase “landscape in music” turned up nothing.2 This line of inquiry is so poorly de- veloped that no equivalent subject heading has been established.

I have always believed that when you no longer enjoy doing 24 Bray Gardens, Loose, Maidstone, Kent, ME15 9TR, UK something, then it’s time to stop and look to do something di erent. [email protected] It was just over 47 years ago that I edited and published Britain’s rst regular monthly country music magazine. Looking back that was quite an audacious and bold undertaking Designer Laura Bethell for a teenager from a council house estate who le school at 15. Some of the original 01622 823922 readers of Country Music Monthly are still around and have continued to follow my writing [email protected] and views on the music as readers of Maverick. ere was a time when I not only knew Editorial Assistant many of the Maverick readers’ names but had a personal contact with them, but recently Chris Beck I’ve lost touch and I have to say that I miss the chats that we used to have when they phoned Project Manager up to renew their subscriptions.
