Fischer, Kristian Pfaller & Heinrich Schatz Abstract The oribatid mite family Quadroppiidae BALOGH , 1983 (Acari: Oribatida) from the Sciliar area (South Tyrol, Italy) The Quadroppiidae species from the Schlern/Sciliar massif (SCHATZ 2008: Gredleriana 8) were rein- vestigated by combining literature research with morphological studies using SEM photography. A total of seven species belonging to two genera were recorded (Quadroppia quadricarinata (MICHAEL , 1885), Qu. hammerae MINGUEZ , RUIZ & SUBIA S , 1985, Qu. longisetosa MINGUEZ , RUIZ & SUBIA S , 1985, Qu. maritalis LION S , 1982, Coronoquadroppia gumista (GO R DEEVA & TA R BA , 1990), C. monstruosa (HA mm E R , 1979), C. parallela OHKUBO , 1995). The morphology and distribution of these species are discussed. Three species (Qu. maritalis, C. gumista and C. parallela) are new records for Italy. Keywords: Acari, Oribatida, Quadroppiidae, taxonomy, distribution, Sciliar, South Tyrol, Italy 1. Einleitung Hornmilben (Oribatiden) sind eine überaus arten- und individuenreiche Gruppe. Auf- grund ihrer geringen Körpergröße sind sie im Allgemeinen wesentlich schlechter bekannt als größere, „leichter sichtbare“ Taxa. Derzeit sind aus Südtirol 329 Horn- milbenarten bekannt; etwa 2/3 dieser Arten wurden in den letzten 10 Jahren in Südtirol erstmals nachgewiesen (SCHATZ 2008). In einer kürzlich abgeschlossenen Untersuchung über Vorkommen und Verteilung von Oribatiden im Naturpark Schlern – Rosengarten wurden mehr als 250 Oribatidenarten gefunden, davon waren 30 % Neumeldungen für Südtirol und 21 Arten neu für die Fauna Italiens (SCHATZ 2008). Am benachbarten Platt- kofel wurden im Rahmen des Tags der Artenvielfalt 2007 zusätzliche Aufsammlungen durchgeführt (FI S CHE R & SCHATZ 2007), wodurch die bekannte Artenzahl von Hornmilben in der Schlernregion auf 264 Arten ansteigt. -

Until now, the data on oribatid species have not been published. This paper presents a list of oribatid species collected during 21 years of ongoing research in three pine stands of different age. The faunistic records refer to 84 species (including 17 species new to the fauna of Latvia), 1 subspecies, 1 form, 5 morphospecies and 18 unidentified taxa. The most dominant and most frequent oribatid species are Oppiella (Oppiella) nova, Tectocepheus velatus velatus and Suctobelbella falcata. GWIAZDOWICZ Poznań University of Life Sciences, Department of Forest Protection, Wojska Polskiego 28, 60-637 Poznań, Poland; e-mail: [email protected] (Received on 31 March 2009, Accepted on 21 July 2009) Abstract: The species composition of mesostigmatid mites in the soil and leaf litter was studied on the Szczeliniec Wielki plateau, which is spatially isolated from similar rocky habitats. A total of 1080 soil samples were taken from June 2004 to September 2005. The samples, including the organic horizon from the herb layer and litter from rock cracks, were collected using steel cylinders (area 40 cm2, depth 0–10 cm). They were generally dominated by Gamasellus montanus, Veigaia nemorensis, and Lepto- gamasus cristulifer. Rhodacaridae, Parasitidae and Veigaiidae were the most numerously represented families as regards to individuals. Among the 55 recorded mesostigmatid species, 13 species were new to the fauna of the Stołowe National Park. Thus the soil mesostigmatid fauna of the Szczeliniec Wielki plateau is generally poor and at an early stage of succession. The 242 new species are distributed unevenly among 50 families, with 62% of the total from the top 10 families. Geographically, these species are distributed unevenly among 39 countries. Most new species (72%) are from the top 10 countries, whereas 61% of the countries have only 1–3 new species each. Four of the top 10 countries are from Asia (Vietnam, China, India and The Philippines).
