Flame of Love— Fasting Sacrifice for others is a big part of the Flame of Love which is not surprising as it is an essential part of Jesus’ life. It is key to both saving souls and opening our lives to grace but per- spective is critical. If we view fasting and sacrifice as something we must do, we miss the point. More than asking, “what do I have to do,” Christians should ask, “what can I do.” The first is rooted in obligation while the second is rooted in love. Reflection by — Saverio Grosso Called to Repentance

oday’s Gospel reading (and next week's) invites us to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Je- sus. JohnT the Baptist's life was fueled by one burning passion - to Second Week point others to Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that John was filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb. Like the prophets of the of Advent Old Testament, John devoted his entire life to prayer and the word of God. He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness where he was tested and grew in the word of God. Prepare The Holy Spirit prepared John for the mission entrusted to him as forerunner of the Messiah and the description of John found the Way in this reading is reminiscent of the description of the prophet Eli- jah (2 Kings 1:8). John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets of Israel, preaching repentance and reform to the people of I will honor I will help Israel. In fact, he later points to Jesus as the Lamb of with dinner God who takes away the sin of the world. Mary and John marks the conversion of those who seek him out pray the by seng the with a baptism of repentance - turning away from sin and table or help taking on a new way of life according to God's word. John's baptism can be understood as an anticipation of 3 mes to do the Christian baptism as he alludes to the difference between dishes aer his baptism and the one yet to come: “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance . . . He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Our baptism in Jesus Christ by water and the Spirit results in a new birth and entry into God's kingdom as His beloved sons and daughters. This baptism gives us the fire of His Spirit so that we may radiate the joy and truth of the Gospel to a world in desperate need of God's light and truth. His word has power to change and transform our lives that we may be lights pointing others to Christ. Like John the Baptist, we too are called to give testimony to the light and truth of Jesus Christ. Saint Matthew tells us that “many of the Pharisees and Sadducees” came to John to be baptized. These were the religious I will be like elites in Jerusalem so we might expect John to give them a warm wel- come. Not so. Why was John so provoked by their appearance at the Our Lady of river? We know that these religious elites were Jesus’ harshest Guadalupe critics and were often too self-absorbed with their own ways that and show their hearts were hardened to the call for repentance. Is this harsh tone and call to repentance still relevant for us? others love Advent reminds the whole Church that we are still waiting for another coming of Jesus. John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus in the first century, we, too, are called to prepare our hearts for Jesus' coming and respond with repentance that will In honor of reform our lives. Those of us who take our religious lives seriously Saint Lucy— should be very attentive to the temptations we face in this time of wait- ing: hypocrisy, doubt, presumption, worry. Lucy means Lord, I often think of this time before Christmas as jolly light— I will and festive. Help me remember that Advent’s liturgical color of smile and purple means it’s a time for repentance as well as preparation. Let your light burn brightly in my heart that I may know the joy and be light for freedom of living a life loved by you in your kingdom. Fill me with someone your Holy Spirit and empower me to be a witness to the truth of your Gospel and to point others to Jesus Christ.

A PARISH FAMILY THANKSGIVING Another year passes and we stop once again to say thanks to Our Lord for His many blessings, gifts, our family, friends and neighbors! While we do give thanks at every Mass, we remember with a keen sense around Thanksgiving Day His goodness, kindness and mercy for all His children and we celebrate with others at the annual Thanksgiving Prayer & Cel- ebration the Friday before Thanksgiving Day with prayer, dinner and dancing. We pray Thanksgiving Eve with our friends and neighbors at the annual Interfaith Community Prayer Service raising voices in prayer and song. And, we remember Him at the celebration of the Eucharist on Thanksgiving Morning. Everyone found joy in coming together! Prayer & Celebration Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Community Prayer Service
