Synthetics and Sealed Dirt: the Science, Data And THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2019 SYNTHETICS AND SEALED REVERSAL ON “NO WHIP” DAY AT SANTA ANITA DIRT: THE SCIENCE, DATA by Dan Ross In the latest move in the ongoing chess games at Santa Anita, AND EXPERT OPINION jockeys will carry and use their crops under the existing rules when race-riding at the track this Friday. This reverses a decision the Jockey’s Guild touted last week, that the jockeys would ride on Friday without one. “We will comply, for the time being, with the request from the Thoroughbred Owners of California to not proceed with the jockeys not using riding crops during the races at Santa Anita Park on Friday, April 12,” said Jockeys’ Guild President and CEO Terry Meyocks, in a joint press release between the Jockeys’ Guild and the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC). “For the past month we have received virtually no support from industry organizations in California until contacted by the TOC in the last day and a half,” Meyocks said. "We're definitely considering plans in the future, on these rainy days, of almost being like in the Northeast, when they have snow days and take the day off," said The Stronach Group's COO Tim Ritvo, about the possibility of restricting racing and training on a sealed track. There's much to dig into when it comes to training and racing on a dirt surface during periods of inclement weather--issues that will be returned to later in the article. But in terms of the health and well-being of the horse, what CHRB vice chair Madeline Auerbach said after the meeting is the "core of what we do," it also refocuses the issue back on synthetic surfaces, with which California has a torrid and costly relationship. A cold hard look at available race-day fatality data, however, tells a stark story. According to the Jockey Club's Equine Injury Database (EID), between 2009 and 2018, on average 1.2 horses per 1000 starts were catastrophically injured on synthetics. That number is 1.47 on the grass, and 1.97 on dirt. Cont. p3 They look like VIEW GALLERY MALIBU MOON -Ned Toffey Foals you would expect from a top son of A.P. Indy's best sire. • An Apology for Mythology
An Apology for Mythology By Joseph Dalton Wright Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Degree of Bachelor Arts in the Integral Curriculum of Liberal Arts at Saint Mary’s College April 16, 2012 Advisor: Ms. Theodora Carlile Wright, 1 “Whence a lover of myth, too, is in a sense a philosopher, for a myth is composed of wonders” -Aristotle, Metaphysics1 1 Metaphysics, Book A, Chapter Two (Aristotle 1966) Wright, 2 Introduction What is the self, how does it operate? This question is the theme of Socrates’ final conversation in Plato’s dialogue Phaedo. The first word of the dialogue is αὐτός2 (self), and in the first sentence Plato connects this issue with the mixture of opposites. “Were you with Socrates yourself, Phaedo, on the day when he drank the poison in prison, or did you hear about it from someone else?” (Phaedo, 57A) Socrates drank the hemlock and fulfilled the Athenian court’s verdict. Plato uses the word φάρµακον3, which in Greek can mean both medicine and poison. If the φάρµακον is medicine, then Socrates is actually curing an illness, and liberating himself from disease, but is the hemlock medicine or poison? The φάρµακον embodies a critical question: how can opposites reconcile and collaborate? The opposing meanings meet, mix, and coordinate in the Φάρµακον; a unity-in-opposition of medicine and poison. Plato knows relationships like this are troubling, but the agony is beneficial, for the test reveals how our consciousness connects and creates. Socrates presents several opposites as candidates for reconciliation throughout the dialogue, such as pleasure and pain, and one and many.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Between Erasure and Exposure: Intermedial Autobiography Since Roland Barthes A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies by Lauren Elizabeth Van Arsdall 2015 © Copyright by Lauren Elizabeth Van Arsdall 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Between Erasure and Exposure: Intermedial Autobiography Since Roland Barthes by Lauren Elizabeth Van Arsdall Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Malina Stefanovska, Chair In my dissertation, I investigate the trend toward intermedial representations of the self in contemporary French personal writing of an autobiographical type. The theoretical framework of my dissertation is based on notions of referentiality presented in La chambre claire, and in essays contemporaneous to Roland Barthes’s by Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Derrida, Pierre Bourdieu, and Jean Baudrillard. As I demonstrate, they are in dialogue with it, all the while exploring the boundaries of self-representation in relation to illness and death. At the outset, an analysis of the discourses of photography in France from the 1980s to the early 2000s informs my discussion of representations of an expected death in works by Alix Cléo Roubaud, Jacques Roubaud, Annie Ernaux, and Hervé Guibert. I argue that the legacy of a Barthesian conceptualization of the photograph obliges writers to rethink their stance towards representing the self. Through gestures of erasure and exposure, they create an intermedial aesthetic coupling writing, photography, and film to explore anew certain taboos concerning self and death. Intermediality opens up the notions of referentiality presented in Roland Barthes’s La chambre ii claire: note sure la photographie— the making of traces through writing, memories, and recording the body.
