Umphrey's Mcgee It's You
Umphrey’s McGee it’s you Bio The music of Umphrey’s McGee unfolds like an unpredictable conversation between longtime friends. Its six participants—Brendan Bayliss [guitar, vocals], Jake Cinninger [guitar, vocals], Joel Cummins [keyboards, piano, vocals], Andy Farag [percussion], Kris Myers [drums, vocals], and Ryan Stasik [bass]—know just how to communicate with each other on stage and in the studio. A call of progressive guitar wizardry might elicit a response of soft acoustic balladry, or a funk groove could be answered by explosive percussion. At any moment, heavy guitars can give way to heavier blues as the boys uncover the elusive nexus between jaw-dropping instrumental virtuosity and airtight song craft. The conversation continues on their eleventh full-length album, it’s not us [Nothing Too Fancy Music]—which was released January 12, 2018. “It represents the band, because it basically runs the gamut from prog rock to dance,” says Brendan. “We’ve mastered our ADD here. The record really shows that.” “No matter what you’re into, there’s something on it’s not us that should speak to you,” agrees Joel. “This is a statement album for Umphrey’s McGee. The sound is as fresh as ever. The songs are strong as they’ve ever been. We’re always pushing forward.” It’s also how the band is celebrating its 20-year anniversary. Instead of retreading the catalog, they turn up with a pile of new tunes. “It’d be easy to play the hits from our first five or ten years,” continues Joel. “We’ve never been a band to rest on our laurels though. -

Taylor Swift Releasing Surprise Album Tonight
Taylor Swift Releasing Surprise Album Tonight Posted by Cyn On 12/10/2020 Surprise! Taylor Swift is dropping a new album tonight to celebrate her 31st birthday. The singer wrote on Twitter, "I’m elated to tell you that my 9th studio album, and folklore’s sister record, will be out tonight at midnight eastern. It’s called evermore." Swift's surprise summer release of the stripped-down folk-inspired folklore generated not only a lot of buzz but a whole bunch of Grammy nominations for the singer. While many of us promised to put our quarantine time to good use but mostly watched Netflix, Swift took the time to collaborate virtually with other musicians and recorded the record at home. However, she said it turned out one record was just not enough. "To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in." Ever since I was 13, I’ve been excited about turning 31 because it’s my lucky number backwards, which is why I wanted to surprise you with this now. You’ve all been so caring, supportive and thoughtful on my birthdays and so this time I thought I would give you something! pic.twitter.com/wATiVSTpuV — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) December 10, 2020 The former teen country superstar said she's been looking forward to turning 31. -
Transnational Habitus: Mariem Hassan As the Transcultural Representation of the Relationship Between Saharaui Music and Nubenegra Records
Transnational Habitus: Mariem Hassan as the transcultural representation of the relationship between Saharaui music and Nubenegra records Luis Gimenez Amoros Submitted in partial fullfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Rhodes University PhD (thesis) Department of Music and Musicology Supervisor: Dr Lee Watkins I Abstract This thesis expands on primary field research conducted for my MMus degree. Undertaken in the Saharaui refugee camps of southern Algeria (2004-2005) that research - based on ethnographic data and the analysis of Saharaui music, known as Haul 1- focussed on the musical system, the social context of musical performance and the music culture in Saharaui refugee camps. This doctoral research examines Saharaui Haul music as practised in Spain and is particularly focussed on its entry, since 1998, into the global market by way of the World Music label, Nubenegra records. The encounter between Saharaui musicians and Nubenegra records has created a new type of Saharaui Haul which is different to that played in the refugee camps. This phenomenon has emerged as a result of western music producers compelling Saharaui musicians to introduce musical changes so that both parties may be considered as musical agents occupying different positions on a continuum of tradition and change. Nubenegra undertook the commodification of Saharaui music and disseminated it from the camps to the rest of the world. A musical and social analysis of the relationship between Nubenegra and Saharaui musicians living in Spain will form the basis of the research in this thesis. In particular, Mariem Hassan is an example of a musician who had her music disseminated through the relationship with Nubenegra and she is promoted as the music ambassador of the Western Sahara. -

Unpopular Culture and Explore Its Critical Possibilities and Ramifications from a Large Variety of Perspectives

Proposing a third term that operates beyond the dichotomy of high culture and mass culture and yet offers a fresh approach to both, these essays address a multitude of different topics that can all be classified as unpopular culture. From David Foster Wallace and Ernest Hemingway to Zane Grey, from Christian rock and country to clack cetal, from Steven Seagal to Genesis (Breyer) P-Orridge, from K-pop to The Real Housewives, from natural disasters to 9/11, from thesis hatements to professional sports, these essays find the unpopular across media and genres, and they analyze the politics and the aesthetics of an unpopular culture (and the unpopular in culture) that has not been duly recognized as such by the theories and methods of cultural studies. "My Gut Is Telling Me That If You Make Something You Love, You Should Just
Everlore: Two Albums that Accurately Portray the Melancholic Mood of a Pandemic By Jannie Gowdy, 12 When I was seven years old, my mom took me to a Taylor Swift concert in Des Moines. I was obsessed with the artist, and I showed up with a paper guitar and my favorite dress on, elated that I was going to finally see my role model perform. My greatest hope was fulfilled: Taylor put on a phenomenal show, gliding over the audience and displaying her powerful vocals. I left there holding her in the highest regard. Over the course of her career, I followed her albums as she went from one era to the next, loving every style change. After all, Taylor Swift is the queen of evolving her discography. She started out with country roots in her debut album, Fearless, and Speak Now, and progressed to pop in Red and 1989. While her next two albums, Reputation and Lover, are also categorized as pop albums as well, they each have a very unique tone displayed by differing characteristics. Reputation’s electro-backing and musical mixing songs are powerful and fierce, while Lover contrasted sharply with softer instrumentals and a self-discovery theme. While Swift’s style is characterized by more specific ‘eras’ and there is always fan speculation about her next era, no one expected her to go the route of indie-folk music. On July 23rd, Swift announced n social media platforms that her eighth album would be dropping at midnight. She wrote in an accompanying statement, "Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed." She went on to say, "My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world.” The sixteen songs she released (later releasing “The Lakes” as a bonus track) incorporated bleak and soft themes, reflecting life during the pandemic. -

Kola 1 Amalba Kola Professor Vancour Music and Media 13 May
Kola 1 Amalba Kola Professor Vancour Music and Media 13 May 2015 From Selling Out to Sold Out: Learning from Beyoncé’s Release Strategy The rising focus on the monetization in the music industry has led to serious concerns regarding the infrastructure of music production and distribution. The convergence of music conglomerates has made it difficult for musicians to succeed without the help of a major label name, thus resulting in the homogeneity of the music available for consumers. With such similar music, it becomes difficult to differentiate and predict what type of music or artist will be successful, and therefore record labels focus on optimizing unique marketing strategies, in order to spread awareness and drive sales. As a result, the industry is becoming preoccupied with investing more time and money into the marketing of an artist or album, rather than finding a quality artist, or developing a masterful album, with the emergence of contracts like 360° deals. Given these changing dynamics between the musician and their label, it is clear that “most musicians make very little money from CD sales and wealth is becoming more and more polarized toward the industry” (Park 27). Artists must now combat these issues with smarter and more innovative techniques in order to reconstruct a business model that values hard-working musicians and recognizes quality artistry. Beyoncé’s self-titled visual arts album is an outlier in this modern music landscape, which invites music industry experts to consider another type of release strategy: one that puts the musician in the position of power, and capitalizes on the power of social media networks. -
