Single ”Everything” er ude i dag: iTunes: http://smarturl.it/EverythingIt Spotify: http://smarturl.it/EverythingSp TDC Play: http://smarturl.it/EverythingTdc WiMP: http://smarturl.it/EverythingWp Rdio: http://smarturl.it/EverythingRd Deezer: http://smarturl.it/EverythingDz ------- Following last month’s announcement that Neneh Cherry will release her first solo album in 16 years – a collaboration with RocketNumberNine, produced by Four Tet, and featuring a guest appearance by Robyn – Neneh is now ready to share further details of this forthcoming record with the world. The album, made over a 5-day period, will be titled Blank Project, and it will be out February 25th, 2014 on Smalltown Supersound. It follows 2012’s The Cherry Thing, a collaborative record with free jazz, noise collective The Thing, which featured new versions of songs by The Stooges, MF Doom, Ornette Coleman, amongst others. While her energy and demeanor may not have changed since the days of Rip Rig + Panic, musically, Blank Projectis a departure from anything Neneh has previously done. What stands out upon first listen is the album’s scarcity: loose drums and a few synthesizers are the only accompaniment to Neneh’s wildly poetic, sometimes-spoken, sometimes-screeching, soul-flooded and raw vocals. The space created by this minimal aesthetic leaves room for occasional pistes and flurries of rapid, yet throbbing and thunderous instrumentation. Featuring combined elements of beat poetry, avant- electronica and beautiful vocal melodies, it’s a record that uses simple ideas to create something entirely original. And despite the personal tragedy Neneh was working through in writing this new material, the songs are far from introverted. As many are aware, the stories from Neneh’s early years are astonishing. She spent her childhood living 50/50 between a loft in New York and in the South of Sweden with her mother and stepfather, the legendary jazz musician Don Cherry. She's been lifted onto Miles Davis’ lap, Allen Ginsberg regularly passed through their home in an evening and as she got older, she could pop in on Arthur Russell, Talking Heads and The Modern Lovers who all lived in the same loft complex in Long Island City New York. At 14, she started taking trips to Harlem with Ari Up of the Slits at a time when few would venture so far uptown. Soon after, she left home and moved to London, and spent the next 20 years inside the crucial developments in British subculture. As post- punk became the site of 80s Britain’s artistic and political resistance, she helped form the anarchic multi-ethnic, multi-genre Rip, Rig + Panic, and she was one of the first to bring hip-hop culture to a British audience with “Buffalo Stance” and Raw Like Sushi. Although at points her career had brushes with the mainstream, Neneh remained staunchly counter-culture. Through post-punk’s adherence to mixed-race line-ups and anti-government stance, to UK rap’s refusal of the conventions of pop, trip-hop’s connection with the politicized elements of rave culture and, through 1996’s Man, where Neneh introduced elements of Senegalese language to mainstream audiences for the first time via the mammoth “7 Seconds” single featuring Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, and now, with Blank Project, Neneh continues to arrive at moments in musical history when there is an opportunity to subvert ideas of popular culture. She is subverting once again, only this time, although this record is musically bold, Neneh sees the stasis she’s challenging isn’t musical or societal, but her own. • Musician Neneh Cherry on Addressing Politics in Your Art
October 29, 2018 - As told to T. Cole Rachel, 2891 words. Tags: Music, Politics, Process, Collaboration. On addressing politics in your art Musician Neneh Cherry on what makes a good a collaborator, the headspace required for making thoughtful art, and why sometimes being quiet is a radical act. What’s the kind of headspace you need to be in when you’re working on music? It’s somewhat different every time, but recently I had a place that I wanted to go in my spirit and soul, through the songs and with the songs. I knew it was going to need me to be in a more… not a static place, exactly, but a more still place. It was almost like I could feel the songs around my head. Of course, the collaborative journey played an important part in actually reaching the goal. In the case of Broken Politics, I think we reached the goal I had in mind. I work with Cameron McVey, who is my husband and my creative partner, beyond just the spousal stuff. We’ve also had a very intimate creative journey. Quite often we’re working with other programmers and musicians when we’re writing, so there are all of these different things to figure out and negotiate. He’s a really fast writer. I’m a much slower writer. A lot of the time we’re in the studio by ourselves, each working at our own pace. Sometimes, even when you have an idea of where you want to go, it’s still a struggle getting there and getting past all the little weird obstacle courses that your brain sets up for you in order to get to that place where you’re creatively open.

Once the effects of the new wave were fully absorbed, it became apparent that the world of singer-songwriters would never be the same again. A conceptual mood had taken over the scene, and that mood's predecessors were precisely the Bob Dylans, the Neil Youngs, the Leonard Cohens, the Tim Buckleys, the Joni Mitchells, who had not been the most popular stars of the 1970s. Instead, they became the reference point for a new generation of "auteurs". Women, in particular, regained the status of philosophical beings (and not only disco-divas or cute front singers) that they had enjoyed with the works of Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Suzy Gottlieb, better known as Phranc (1), was the (Los Angeles-based) songwriter who started the whole acoustic folk revival with her aptly-titled Folksinger (? 1984/? 1985 - nov 1985), whose protest themes and openly homosexual confessions earned her the nickname of "all-american jewish-lesbian folksinger". She embodied the historic meaning of that movement because she was a punkette (notably in Nervous Gender) before she became a folksinger, and because she continued to identify, more than anyone else, with her post- feminist and AIDS-stricken generation in elegies such as Take Off Your Swastika (1989) and Outta Here (1991).

  • James Holden's New Live Touring Incarnation (In Support of Holden's 2013 Album 'The Inheritors')
RocketNumberNine biography In the two years that have elapsed since the 2013 release of their second RocketNumberNine album 'MeYouWeYou', London-born brothers Ben and Tom Page have found themselves much in demand, to the point where their original RocketNumberNine pet project has had to take something of a back seat. A hook up with Smalltown Supersound labelmate and Swedish singing superheroine Neneh Cherry saw the Page siblings drafted in to provide the synth and drum complement to her Kieran Hebden-produced 'Blank Project' album in early 2014, leading on to RocketNumberNine's permanent installation as her backing band on the subsequent Neneh Cherry tour. And not content with one round the world trip, younger brother Tom has somehow also found the time to moonlight as drummer for modular synth maestro James Holden's new live touring incarnation (in support of Holden's 2013 album 'The Inheritors'). But now, as one set of touring cycles near their natural end, and with a crisp new RocketNumberNine 12” poised to emerge on Holden's Border Community label in the Autumn of 2015, the time has come for the brothers to refocus their attention on the symbiotic RocketNumberNine improvisational partnership where it all began. Growing up together in Chingford in the North Eastern outskirts of London, nestled just inside the M25, it was eight years ago that brothers Ben and Tom Page first formalised their musical union as synth-and- drum improv duo RocketNumberNine. But their dedication to one another runs way deeper than most siblings, having also lived together for most of their adult lives, including a spell together in a musical commune near Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland.
