Press Release Mick Foster is a saxophonist and composer who is known as one of the UK's foremost exponents of the baritone saxophone. 'Live at The Vortex' is an album of melodic original pieces composed by Mick. It was recorded at The Vortex Jazz Club, London, in 2018 and captures the intimacy and excitement of this venue. Mick plays baritone, alto and soprano saxophones and is joined by the engaging, versatile trio of Dominic Ashworth on guitars, Tom Farmer on bass and Tristan Mailliot on drums. The album is available in both digital format and as a physical CD, and will be released on Hainault Records (HNT 0015) on Oct 14 2020, via Bandcamp, Mick's own website and streaming sites. Biographies Mick Foster is a saxophonist and composer who is known as one of the UK's foremost exponents of the baritone saxophone. He has worked extensively in the fields of jazz, commercial and classical music as a saxophonist and composer. He has appeared with many ensembles which include the big bands of John Dankworth, Stan Sulzmann and Mike Garrick, the Back to Basie Orchestra, The Humphrey Lyttelton Band, Ginger Baker’s Air Force, Laura Jurd’s Human Spirit, The London Jazz Orchestra, The London Philharmonic Orchestra and English National Opera. As a composer Mick has written for many ensembles and his music has been played around the world and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. He has recorded three albums under his own name and runs his own record label, Hainault Records. The Trade and Cooperation Agreement – How to help musicians work in the EU after BREXIT 1 Introduction UK music industry generated £2.9 billion in exports in 2019, a 9% increase from £2.7 billion in 2018.1 Most musicians and performers rely on touring and performing in the European Union to make a living. Musicians, and other creative and cultural workers, have specific needs and it is crucial that visa and customs rules post-Brexit take this into account. An inability to maintain these exports due to restrictions on working in the EU will seriously damage Britain’s image and reputation as well. It will also lead to an increase in unemployment and reduce the sector’s contribution to the economy 2 What can you do? 2.1 Urge the Government to add musicians to the list of ‘Independent Professionals’ at the earliest opportunity. 2.2 Ensure the Government negotiates a reciprocal arrangement with the EU that will allow musicians to work freely and unhampered by red tape 2.3 Support the Musicians’ Union call on the Government and Parliament to back a Musicians' Passport for musicians working in the EU post-Brexit. 3 How it is – then and now The actual world of a musician. ECCO F E AT U R I N G THE BIG BAND OF RTV SLOVENIA LJUBLJANA, 28 SEPTEMBER 2016 — KINO ŠIŠKA — ABOUT ECCO THE EUROPEAN CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS ORCHESTRA ECCO is an ECSA project dedicated to performing and promoting contemporary art music and to reaching new audiences. It operates as a network of active ensembles, orchestras and young professionals, supporting the creative dialogue between composers and performers and offering young professionals the opportunity to develop their skills with ensembles experienced in performing contemporary music on an international level. For this first edition of anECCO Big Band concert, the Big Band of RTV Slovenia will perform ten different pieces written by composers from seven different European countries that were selected by the ECCO Artistic Committee. Pieces are received via a call to all ECSA member societies and are carefully selected to reflect the cultural and aesthetical diversity of European art music in the 21st century. The ECCO concert, and other cultural projects organised by ECSA, are aimed at increasing the visibility of ECSA and all issues connected to the status of contemporary music creators. The Big Band of RTV Slovenia, conducted by Sigi Feigl, will tonight perform works by Michel Herr (BE), Jukka Linkola (FI), Outi Tarkiainen (FI), Piotr Wróbel (PL), Matjaž Mikuletič (SI), Nikki Iles (UK), Mark Lockheart (UK), Helge Sunde (NO), Krešimir Herceg (HR) and Klemen Smolej (SI). Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean.
