Q &A Airline profitability is improving again, what developments can carriers make and how can they innovate to sustain and build their businesses?
We asked five of our sponsors to respond >
12 Q&A
PHIL CALLOW, Chief Executive Officer, OAG
Whilst the airline industry has returned to profitability and the aviation world looks a nice place to be, after so many years of challenges and external battles, the industry has entered a new era. Increasing choices, new entrants and new markets all translate into increased competition and challenge even the most brand-loyal passengers. We are in the era of personalisation where travellers expect everything to be refined specifically for them in an instant via their chosen channel and device. Scheduling and flight status information aren’t just about speed and accuracy. Better utilisation of data will lead to better engagement of travellers. Airlines need to look at ways to use data more intuitively and look at the “micro moments” comprising a journey. Standing in security queues, being unsure about flight take-off times can be painful. If airlines can work out a contextual and guided experience, then it would help them in building a better connection with travellers. A push notification at the opportune time can alleviate stress and significantly enhance the passenger experience. Personalisation offers airlines an innovative way to manage fares, schedules and merchandising of ancillary revenues. Those who get this right and innovate now will ultimately be better prepared for the next challenges facing the airline industry in what is a very cyclical world. www.oag.com
