The Church, Abortion, and Sister Margaret Ellen Traxler Robert McClory “A Chicago nun’s battle with Rome” Chicago Magazine, December 1985 Used with Permission At 11 p.m. on December 7, 1984, Sister Margaret Ellen Traxler had just finished night prayers in her small room at St. Patrick’s parish convent, on Chicago’s Far Southeast Side, when the telephone rang. The caller was Sister Maureen Murray, a superior of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Roman Catholic religious order to which Traxler belongs. “Peggy, I’m afraid I have some bad news,” said Murray, who then proceeded to read a letter that the international president of the order had just received. It was from Archbishop Jean Jerome Hamer, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation on Religious and Secular Institutes-in other words, the man who oversees the affairs of Catholic nuns all over the world. The letter stated, in effect, that the authorities in her order should demand that Traxler recant a public declaration that she had signed two months earlier. Appearing as a full-page advertisement in The New York Times, the declaration had challenged the church’s official teaching on abortion. If Traxler refused to recant, Hamer’s letter said, she was to be threatened with removal from the order. Similar letters had been sent to the superiors of 23 other U.S. nuns and of two priests and two religious brothers who had signed the same declaration. There could be no doubt about the intent: the offenders were in serious trouble, and the Vatican meant business. -

NOVEMBER 1-7, 2020 IN FOCUS 9 OUR SUNDAY VISITOR | SERVICE CHICAGO RELIGIOUS UNDETERREDBy Joyce Durgia | Photos by Karen IN Calloway MISSION Despite the limitations caused by COVID-19, the Franciscans of the Eucharist at the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels continue to meet the needs of the poor in their community The Franciscans of the Eucharist of Chicago and volunteers run the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels Food Pantry on Aug. 25 in Chicago’s West Humboldt Park neighborhood. When the pandemic hit, the mission had to move its pantry outdoors. In the first few months of the pandemic when Chicago shut down due to COVID-19, the mission’s pantry was one of the only ones open in the city, so it saw a rise in the number of people coming for food each Tuesday. Authority and Responsibilities of an Apostolic Administrator in a diocese in a time of “sede vacante” (“the seat being vacant”) August 25, 2020 (adapted from the Diocese of Buffalo) With the installation of Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski as the ordinary for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, it was announced today that His Holiness, Pope Francis, has appointed Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, Bishop of the Diocese of Worcester, to serve as Apostolic Administrator or the Diocese of Springfield. The Diocese of Springfield is now in a time of “sede vacante,” as the seat of the diocese is vacant until a new bishop is appointed and installed. A number of changes are in effect during this time. For example, • Offices that exercise general or specific authority granted directly by the diocesan bishop cease since their authority derives from the diocesan bishop, such as the Vicars General and other vicars. • Some offices remain during the vacant see: chancellor, judicial vicar and financial officer. These offices are necessary for the ordinary operation of the diocese and so remain in place and assist the Apostolic Administrator in his work. • While the judicial vicar’s authority is granted by the diocesan bishop, it does not cease during the vacant see so the process of justice within the diocese can continue without interruption. What is an Apostolic Administrator? An apostolic administrator is a bishop who is appointed by the pope to see to the good order and administration of a diocese that is awaiting the appointment of a permanent bishop or ordinary. In addition to his usual pastoral responsibilities as bishop, the apostolic administrator has the authority to make the necessary decisions for the daily operations of the diocese. -

Father James W. Craig is a priest living in the Chicagoland area. From the time he first started hearing stories of the Celestial Father he became fascinated with the life and legacy of Giuseppe Maria Abbate. Curriculum vitae Bishop Paulo Romeu Dantas Bastos was born on 20 August 1955 in Nova Soure, diocese of Alagoinhas, in the State of Bahia. He began his studies in philosophy at the Universidade Católica do Salvador-BA, and completed them at the Institute of Philosophy and Theology of Barra-BA. He studied theology at the Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul. On 18 May 1985 he received priestly ordination, and was incardinated in the diocese of Barreiras, where he held the following offices: parish vicar of the Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Formosa do Rio Preto-BA (1984-1985); parish administrator of São Sebastião in Barreiras-BA (1986-1987) and of Senhora Santana in Riachão das Neves-BA (1987-1991); parish priest of the Cathedral of São João Batista in Barreiras-BA (1992-2002); diocesan pastoral coordinator (1987-1996); youth pastoral coordinator (1987-1996); and vicar general (1997- 2002). Of those to whom the Pastoral Code of Conduct applies because their work includes, either directly or indirectly, performing the pastoral work of the Church, a correct, professional manner of dealing with each other and with others can be expected, using as an example the manner in which Jesus Christ worked with His disciples and other contemporaries. This is a basic condition for social safety. Within this framework, preventing transgressive behaviour is a conditio sine qua non, a necessary precondition. The Church as a religious community and as an organisation must act as an example of social safety. The Code of Pastoral Conduct offers a framework within which social safety holds a central position and this includes concrete standards like a guide for appropriate behaviour in pastoral situations. It is the responsibility of those to whom the Code of Conduct applies to set and to keep clear and correct boundaries in all relationships in which they offer pastoral care or spiritual guidance as well as in all related relationships. -

Clerical Abuse and Misconduct: Diocese of Springfield in Illinois by Gene Thomas Gomulka A former North American College (NAC) seminarian, Anthony Gorgia, filed an explosive lawsuit against Cardinal Timothy Dolan and NAC officials, including the NAC rector and Diocese of Springfield in Illinois priest, Father Peter Harman. Filled with graphic details, the lawsuit alleges that Gorgia was reprised against and coerced into leaving seminary after he received word from other NAC seminarians about inappropriate physical behavior toward vulnerable seminarians by the NAC vice-rector, Washington Archdiocese priest, Father Adam Park, which Gorgia himself witnessed. The lawsuit maintains that Gorgia was perceived as a threat to revealing the depth of the secret homosexual lifestyles of NAC officials, including Harman. As such, according to the lawsuit, Harman and Dolan used entirely false and easily disprovable claims as a pretext to extract Gorgia from the seminary without any justification. A priest with decades of seminary experience attested to the fact that no seminarian is discontinued just three months into the academic year after having just received the faculty’s unanimous vote to advance to that year, as Gorgia did, or having a stellar and exemplary record, as Gorgia had, on the basis of absurd reasons. If a seminarian is discontinued in the middle of an academic year, it is either because he has discerned he is not called to priesthood, or because he committed a serious offense. Insofar as neither of these conditions apply to Gorgia, the real motives of Harman, Dolan, and complicit clerics’ actions demand explanation. To understand why Dolan had such an intense interest in covering up misconduct at the expense of causing harm to Gorgia, one needs to consider the ordeal Father Ryszard Biernat suffered in the Diocese of Buffalo. -

Many of these Republican-leaning Catholics are displaying a more outspoken, culture-war oriented form of Catholicism that has been dubbed Evangelical Catholicism. Through their forceful disciplining of pro-choice Catholics and treatment of abortion in their quadrennial voting guides, as well as their emphasis on “religious liberty”, the U.S. bishops have played a major role in the rise of these Evangelical Catholics. Introduction While the Catholic Church is associated with opposition to legalized abortion, a review of the historical record shows that the anti-abortion movement was largely fomented by the Catholic hierarchy and fueled by grassroots Evangelical opposition to abortion [1]. Lay Catholics have largely tracked general public opinion on abortion, with just over half of white Catholics saying it should be legal; polls have consistently found that only about 13% of Catholics support the position of the Catholic Church that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances [2,3]. As a result, Catholic voters have been comfortable supporting candidates who favor abortion rights, adding to their reputation as swing voters who have backed both successful Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. However, a substantial subset of white Catholic voters now appears more firmly committed to the Republican Party. -

Murphy Cardinal Joseph Bernardin: May he rest in peace On Thursday Nov. 14, 1996, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, Archbishop of Chicago, died. He was a remarkable and gifted person of faith. On Thursday evening, I offered Mass for Cardinal Bernardin at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. At this liturgy, I noted in the homily that we gathered to mourn the death of a man whose life and death have impacted a nation and a world. We came together that night to ask God to welcome Cardinal Joseph Bernardin into the Lord’s presence for all eternity. ! In the Gospel proclaimed to us that evening, the Pharisees asked Jesus when the Kingdom of God would come. Jesus responded by telling them not to look here or there, but to look at the present moment and to realize that the Kingdom of God is present among us now. Yet, if we are to recognize the Kingdom of God, we need people around us to preach the Good News that the Kingdom of God is present. ! Throughout the past several days, we have remembered a man for whom the preaching of the Kingdom of God was a passion. Cardinal Bernardin in living and dying, announced the message of the Gospel in powerful, persuasive ways. As a leader of the church in our country and world, Cardinal Bernardin called all people of good will to recognize the values of the Gospel message. He did this first by living the Gospel, then teaching by example. -
