INDIAN PHYSICS ASSOCIATION R. D. BIRLA AWARD – 2020 IN PHYSICS Indian Physics Association (IPA) invites nomination for R.D. Birla for the year 2020 . Instituted in the year 1980, the award is given to a scientist who has made outstanding contribution in physics. Previous recipients of this award are A. Salam, B.V. Sreekantan, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, R. Ramanna, Govind Swarup, Sivaramakrishna Chandrasekhar, P.K. Iyengar, R. Chidambaram, G.S. Agarwal, J.V. Narlikar, Ashoke Sen, Bikash Sinha, P.K. Kaw, N. Kumar, S.S. Kapoor, M.G.K. Menon, S.P. Pandya, T.V. Ramakrishnan, Ajay Sood, M. Lakshmanan, V.S. Ramamurthy, Rohini Godbole, and Mustansir Barma. THE AWARD CONSISTS OF A CITATION, MEDAL AND ₹50,000/- GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATIONS • The nominee should be an Indian citizen working/worked in India • The nominee should have made significant overall contribution as a physicist • Nomination can be made by i. Any Life Member of the Indian Physics Association ii. Head/Chairman of a Physics Department of an Indian University iii. Head of a recognized research institution in India iv. Previous recipient of the Award v. CHUGANI MEMORIAL AWARD - 2020 for EXCELLENCE IN APPLIED PHYSICS Indian Physics Association (IPA) invites nomination for Murli M. Chugani Memorial Award for the year 2020 . Murli M. Chugani Memorial Award, instituted in 1998 by the Chugani family in the memory of late Shri M. M. Chugani, is meant to give recognition to an Indian Scientist/Engineer working in India who has made outstanding contribution of National importance in any major application oriented area such as - Engineering Physics, Particle Accelerators, Aeronautics, Physics of Ballistic Missiles, Physics of Satellites, Biophysics, Reactor Physics, Computers and associated technologies etc. It is expected that in proposing a nomination for this award, write up (by a nominator) will highlight application oriented achievements of the nominee and how these have led to significant impact at the National level. Previous recipients of this award are K. Kasturirangan, S.K. Sikka, Ajoy K. Ghatak, V.C. Sahni, Madhavan Nair, Anil Kakodkar, G.K. Mehta, O.N. Srivastava, Subbiah Arunan, R.G. Pillay and Tessy Thomas. THE AWARD CONSISTS OF A CITATION, MEDAL AND ₹1,00,000/- GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATIONS • The nominee should be an Indian citizen working in India and affiliated to Indian Institution • The nominee should have made significant overall contribution in the above mentioned areas • Nomination can be made by i. Any Life Member of the Indian Physics Association ii. Head/Chairman of a Physics Department of an Indian University iii. Head of a recognized research institution in India iv. Head of an industry in India catering to research needs in physics/ physical sciences / other related disciplines v. Senior scientists from DRDO/ISRO/CSIR organizations vi. IYENGAR MEMORIAL AWARD - 2020 for EXCELLENCE IN EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS Indian Physics Association (IPA) invites nomination for P. K. Iyengar Memorial Award for excellence in experimental physics for the year 2020 . Instituted in the year 2012, the award is given to a scientist who made outstanding contribution in any area of experimental physics – either in terms of innovative experimental techniques or innovative instrumentation. Previous recipients of this prestigious award are S.M. Yusuf, Arindam Ghosh, K.B. Maiti and S. A. Rangwala. THE AWARD CONSISTS OF A CITATION AND ₹1,00,000/- GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATIONS • The nominee should be an Indian citizen working in India and affiliated to an Indian Indian Institution. • The nominee should be between 40-50 years on 31 st December 2019 • The nominee should have made significant overall contribution as an experimental physicist, with a specific innovative component The nomination should include • Bio-data (including list of publication) the nominee • Write up ( in about 1000 words), bringing out the specific innovative component • Reprint of five (5) major publication • Any additional document in support of the nomination Nomination can be made by i. Instituted in the year 2006, the award is given to a scientist who has made outstanding contribution in any area of Theoretical physics, Astrophysics or Biophysics. THE AWARD CONSISTS OF A CITATION, MEDAL AND ₹25,000/- GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATIONS • The nominee should be less than 40 year of age on 31 st December 2019 • The nominee should be an Indian citizen working in India and affiliated to an Indian Indian Institution • The nominee should have made significant overall contribution as a physicist/Bio- physicist • It is desirable that nominee should have a Ph.D. degree. Alternately, in exceptional cases, the quality of research should be demonstrated through high quality publication and citation The nomination should include • Bio-data (including list of publication) the nominee • Write up ( in about 1000 words), bringing out the specific innovative component • Reprint of five (5) major publication • One page write-up from the nominee detailing future academic vision as a researcher • Any additional document in support of the nomination Nomination can be made by i. Seshadri Memorial Instrumentation Award in Physical Sciences for year 2020 . Instituted in the year 1986, the award is given for innovation and /or excellence in indigenous instrumentation development in physical Sciences. The instrumentation should involve a substantial amount of hardware. It can also include development of add-on instrumentation to increase the versatility and usefulness of sophisticated/complex system. Due credit will be given to ingenuity and originality. THE AWARD CONSISTS OF A CITATION AND ₹20,000/- GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATIONS The nominee(s)can be individual or a team of two or three members • The nominee(s) should be less than 40 year of age on 31 st December 2019 • The nominee(s) should be affiliated to an Institution in India • The nominee(s) should have carried out the development/related work in India • It is desirable that nominee should have a Ph.D. degree. Alternately, in exceptional cases, the quality of research should be demonstrated through high quality publication and citation The nomination should include • Bio-data of the nominee(s) including list of publications • Write up ( in about 1000 words), which provide: a) Brief description of the instrument developed (500 words) b) Innovative ideas or new design concept involved (100 words) c) Hardware and software components details (200 words) d) Impact of the development work on Physical Sciences(100 words) e) Nature of work (development/import substitution (50 words)) f) Delineation of contribution of nominees(s) in case of joint work (50 words) g) Reprint of related publication/patents (if any) • One page write up from the nominee detailing future academic vision as a researcher • Any additional document in support of the nomination • Name, address and e-mail of two referees, familiar with the instrumentation Nomination can be made by i.
