Sylvain --- PS: om de ‘Franco-fil’ niet (meer) te ontvangen, klik op ‘antwoord’ en stuur me een (lege) mail. 2 1/ Mes tuyaux… pour une soirée Cinéma! Éen van mijn goede voornemens van dit jaar was om meerdere echt goede Franse films te vinden om ‘Soirées Cinéma’ te kunnen geven tijdens mijn cursussen. Hier deel ik met jullie mijn laatste trouvailles: 1/ Les invicibles > (mijn commentaar hieronder is een voorbeeld van mijn tweetalige om-de-dag-post op mijn facebook-pagina www.facebook.com/sylvainlelargetalenvoortalent ) Dieu sait que je n'aime pas Depardieu! En ce monstre sacré, je ne vois plus qu'un sacré monstre: énorme, grossier, présomptueux... Et puis, comment peut-on oser jouer les Obélix quand on a interprété Cyrano? Et pourtant, il joue le rôle principal dans un de mes films préférés: 'Les invicibles'. Un film à la gloire de la pétanque, mais surtout une charge bien menée contre racisme et sexisme. On y voit un nouveau riche qui se fait fort de hisser la pétanque au niveau de discipline olympique - ce qui serait, entre nous soit dit, bien mérité. Le richard en question est prêt à faire toutes les courbettes pour parvenir à son but, quitte à galvauder l'esprit du jeu. Eh bien, figurez- vous que la réalité dépasse la fiction... Mardi dernier, Ouest-France jette un caillou dans la mare en titrant: 'Les jeans sont désormais interdits à la pétanque'. J'ai d'abord cru à un canular, mais non, c'est officiel: la Fédération a en effet décrété que "le jean bleu est interdit" aux Championnats de France! Tout comme le short et le bermuda. C'est un peu du sensationnalisme de la part de Ouest-France, car rien n'empêchera les 15 millions de joueurs français de pratiquer attifés comme bon leur semble, mais il n'en reste pas moins que le signal envoyé pas les officiels frise quelque peu le ridicule. Disqualifier un joueur parce qu'il montre un genou ou que ses pantalons sont bleus, c'est... de la pantalonnade. Bande-annonce: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNdDIH-epxQ NL/ God weet dat ik niet van Depardieu houd! In dit heilige monster zie ik maar gewoon een monster: enorm, onbeleefd, arrogant... En vooral, hoe kan je als Obelix gaan rondlopen nadat je Cyrano vertolkt hebt? En toch speelt hij de hoofdrol in een van mijn favoriete films: 'Les invicibles'. Een ode aan de jeu de boules, maar vooral een goed uitgevoerde aanklacht tegen racisme en seksisme. Het gaat over een nouveau riche die sterk maakt de jeu de boules tot het niveau van een Olympische discipline te brengen - wat trouwens volkomen terecht zou zijn. De rijkerd in kwestie is bereid om allerlei compromissen aan te gaan om zijn doel te bereiken, zelfs als het betekent dat je de geest van het spel verdoezelt. Maar, als vaak, gaat de werkelijkheid verder dan de fictie... Afgelopen dinsdag gooide Ouest-France een steen in de vijver met de titel: 'Het is nu verboden om in spijkerbroek jeu de boule te spelen'. Aanvankelijk dacht ik dat het om een grap ging, maar nee, het is officieel: de Federatie heeft inderdaad besloten dat 'de blauwe spijkerbroek verboden is" op de Franse Kampioenschappen! Net als de korte broek en de bermuda. Het is een beetje een sensatie-titel van Ouest-France, want niets zal de 15 miljoen Franse spelers ervan weerhouden om naar in welke kleding dan ook hun spel te beoefenen, maar het is wel zo dat het signaal dat door de autoriteiten uitgezonden wordt grenst aan het belachelijke. Een speler diskwalificeren omdat hij zijn knie laat zien of een blauwe broek aan heeft... Lolbroekerij!     12 The History of Police Uniform The History of Police Uniform The uniform of the British bobby has evolved not only with changing fashion trends, but also with the developing needs of officers. In the beginning, police dressed in the style of a gentleman about town. Shortly afterwards, the police uniform reflected the military style of the day, firstly inspired by the French, and then the German fashion after 1870. After World War I, the military styles changed, but the police did not follow their trend-setters. They kept their style of dress until the 1950s when it was made more comfortable, and the basic uniform has changed very little since. The First Uniform of the Glamorgan Constabulary The first officers in the Glamorgan Constabulary adopted the style of dress worn by London's Metropolitan Police. This consisted of a top hat, often called a ‘stovepipe’ or ‘chimney pot hat’, a swallow tailed coat, navy blue winter trousers or white summer trousers, and wellington boots. Officers concealed their decorated truncheons PC 67 Ephraim Watkins of Bridgend in 1856, with his (featuring the Royal coat of arms and the words metal reinforced hat. ‘Glamorganshire Constable’) in the tails of their coat, along with their rattle and handcuffs. On 13 September that year the military, headed by Gen Miguel Primo de Rivera, overthrew the government, and King Alfonso XIII gave the new dictator legitimacy by naming him as prime minister. Primo de Rivera announced: ‘Our aim is to open a brief parenthesis in the constitutional life of Spain, and to re-establish it as soon as the country offers us men uncontaminated with the vices of political organization.’ The dictator installed a governing military Directory, dissolved the Cortes General (parliament), and decreed martial law. While co-operating with the French in 1925–26 to bring the Rif War in Morocco to a successful close, Primo de Rivera launched major infrastructure programmes at home, and the mid-1920s brought some modernization. However, although foreign trade had increased by 300 per cent by 1927, this up-turn was based on protectionist economic nationalism, and the boom died away. As times got harder again, many Spaniards – workers’ movements and liberal intelligentsia alike – chafed under the regime’s repression, in a sclerotic society that condemned the poor to wretchedness and political progressives to impotence.

    From Fur to Felt Hats: The Hudson’s Bay Company and the Consumer Revolution in Britain, 1670-1730 By Natalie Hawkins Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the MA degree in History University of Ottawa © Natalie Hawkins, Ottawa, Canada, 2014 ii Abstract From Fur to Felt Hats: The Hudson’s Bay Company and the Consumer Revolution in Britain, 1670-1730 Natalie Hawkins Dr. Richard Connors 2014 This dissertation seeks to explore the wide reaching effects of the ‘Consumer Revolution of the Augustan Period’ (1680-1750) by examining the Hudson’s Bay Company from the perspective of the London metropole. During this period, newly imported and manufactured goods began flooding English markets. For the first time, members of the middling and lower sorts were able to afford those items which had previously been deemed ‘luxuries.’ One of these luxuries was the beaver felt hat, which had previously been restricted to the wealthy aristocracy and gentry because of its great cost. However, because of the HBC’s exports of beaver fur from Rupert’s Land making beaver widely available and therefore, less expensive, those outside of the privileged upper sorts were finally able to enjoy this commodity. Thus, the focus here will be on the furs leaving North America, specifically Hudson’s Bay, between 1670 and 1730, and consider the subsequent consumption of those furs by the British and European markets. This thesis examines English fashion, social, economic, and political history to understand the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Consumer Revolution, and their effects on one another.

Myriad reasons for this but mainly its the extra size means we can depict the armour and dress of the period with greater detail and variations. It also has the benefit of making the weapons more robust. The first offering is Gaul's to be followed by Caesarian Roman. Have various thought about what we do after the Romans so any suggestions welcome. Plans at the moment are to do a range for the Norman conquest of southern Italy.
