THE SANFORD FILE HEAD COACH MIKE SANFORD COACHING HISTORY Mike Sanford will coach his final game at UNLV on Saturday. He was 2005-PR UNLV hired as the ninth head coach in Rebel football history on Dec. 6, 2004. Head Coach Charged with reviving a program coming off four straight losing seasons, 2003-04 UTAH Offensive Coordinator, RBs Sanford, now 54, entered his first head coaching position after a career 2002 STANFORD as one of the top assistants in the nation. Offensive Coordinator, QBs At UNLV, Sanford replaced his college coach, John Robinson, who retired 1999-01 SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (NFL) after a legendary career that included six seasons with the Rebels. Wide Receivers Before heading to the desert, Sanford spent two seasons as offensive coordinator at the University 1997-98 NOTRE DAME of Utah, which went 21-2 overall and 13-1 in the Mountain West Conference during his time in Salt Lake Quarterbacks City. In fact, the 2004 Utes finished ranked fourth in the nation and made history by crashing the elite 1989-96 USC Bowl Championship Series and earning a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Wide Receivers A three-decade college and NFL coaching veteran, Sanford went to Utah from Stanford, where he 1987-88 PURDUE Quarterbacks was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2002. Most of his coaching career has been 1985-86 LONG BEACH STATE spent at the collegiate level, although he spent three years as the receivers coach for the NFL’s San Offensive Coordinator Diego Chargers from 1999-2001. 1983-84 LONG BEACH STATE His NCAA Division I coaching experience includes stints at Notre Dame, USC, Purdue, Long Beach Quarterbacks, Wide Receivers State, Virginia Military Institute and Army. A California native, Sanford is regarded as one the top recruiters 1981-82 VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE of the Golden State, which is a key cog in the building of any winning team at UNLV. Quarterbacks, Wide Receivers, TE Sanford’s first coaching position was as a graduate assistant under the man he replaced here, 1979-80 ARMY Robinson, at Southern California in 1977. His full-time coaching chronology began in 1978 as the Wide Receivers, Tight Ends defensive coordinator at San Diego City College. 1978 SAN DIEGO CITY COLLEGE Defensive Coordinator As an assistant coach, Sanford 1977 USC participated in nine bowl games Graduate Assistant with three programs. Down 20-7 in the fourth O. 8 at Nevada, Reno quarter, Clausen led UNLV on a seven-play, 66-yard drive that culminated with a 13-yard scoring toss to Rodelin 2012 Anthony.
