Cardinal Allen Catholic High School School Newsletter April 2017 Name: ……………………………….. His Lordship visits Cardinal Allen

Our School hosted a talk from a member of the House of Lords to encourage students to become more engaged with the political and parliamentary process. Lord Goddard of Stockport met with some Year 9 pupils, GCSE History students, and the members of the school’s Student Council to talk about the work and role of the House of Lords. This was followed by a question and answer session on various aspects of the parliamentary process and life at Westminster generally. To thank Lord Goddard for coming to , the pupils presented him with a Cardinal Allen scarf and a souvenir tin of Fisherman’s Friend lozenges. Year 10 pupil Erin Broderick said: “Lord Goddard was really interesting and answered lots of questions about issues such as Brexit and fracking.” Michael Akers, Assistant Headteacher and teacher of History at Cardinal Allen, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to interact with someone who knows the parliamentary system inside out, as it can sometimes seem far removed from their daily lives. “Lord Goddard gave our pupils a really informative and entertaining overview of the work of the House of Lords and also provided some inspiration by explaining how he got there despite his relatively humble background.” The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s “Peers in Schools” programme, which has been running across the country since 2007 and has so far involved around 75,000 young people. This continuing outreach programme sends members of the House of Lords into schools/academies and colleges across the country to give talks in support of the citizenship curriculum. Beth Brown (Y10) added: “It was great to have such an interesting insight into what actually happens in the Houses of Parliament.” (This article appeared in the Fleetwood Weekly News on Thursday 24th March 2017)

Year 9 Notorianni Ice Cream Project Year 9 have recently completed their ‘Notorianni’ ice cream project in English. Each group across the year were tasked with re-branding the company, in order to open a new store for the famous parlour, here in Fleetwood. It was a fantastic effort from all year 9 pupils and our four lucky winners were Anya Franklin-Williams, Alissa Hamilton, Lily Eaton, Lily Shoulder and Sammy Hall. The competition was fierce but their space themed- re imagining of ‘Notorianni’ was enough to convince the judges, three members of the ‘Notorianni’ team in , that their vision was worth the prize of lots of ice cream! Well done to all of our year 9 students who participated, it was great to be involved in.

World Book Day Now celebrating its 20th year, World Book Day on the 2nd March 2017 was a big celebration – the perfect chance to sit down with an old classic or find a new favourite! Not only was it a fantastic celebration of authors and illustrators, most importantly it was a celebration of reading. Reading develops the imagination. With reading, a person can go anywhere in the world or even out of it – the possibilities are endless! The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the wonderful world of reading. KS3 students received a special £1.00 World Book Day token which could be exchanged for any of the specially produced £1.00 World Book Day books at various book shops or used to save £1.00 off any book costing £2.99 or more. The Aquinas Centre was a hub of activity as a number of students celebrated World Book Day by taking part in various competitions and celebrating reading. Pupil Librarians Wanted! The LRC will shortly be advertising for new Pupil Librarians and Monitors. Cardinal Allen encourages pupils to participate in the running of the library by volunteering to become Pupil Librarians. Pupils can help before registration, at lunchtime or during library periods. The Pupil Librarian Training Programme allows for different levels of ability and pupils can progress through the levels at their own speed. Librarians have an important role, not just in the day to day running of the LRC but also contributing to the development of the service. If you are interested in becoming a pupil librarian, please see Miss Shirreffs for an application form.
