This children’s work edition of Journeys in the Spirit comes out monthly. It offers resources and ideas to Quakers engaging with children aged 4–12 years in a Quaker setting. It is offered with the intention of providing an opportunity for exploring, creating and learning in an atmosphere of worship in partnership on our shared journey in the spirit. Included are sections on: getting ready, for those co-ordinating the programme; gather, meeting, centering, focusing: engage, beginning to think about the theme; respond, activities linked to the theme; reflect, ending appropriately; and review, evaluating what has happened. To offer a balanced session you should aim to do something from each section. Some of the activities are included on additional sheets. Timings or ages are not stated, as this will depend on the group and how the guidance and activities are used. Underpinning each issue is the idea that there are four directions to our spiritual journey. Inwards to ourselves; outwards to others; upwards (or even further inwards?) towards the deeper mystery; downwards to the world we live in. Journeys in the Spirit offers resources and ideas to Quakers engaging with children and young people. THE PUNISHMENT OF CRIME IN PROVINCIAL PENNSYLVANIA HE history of the punishment of crime in provincial Pennsyl- vania is especially interesting, not only as one aspect of the Tbroad problem of the transference of English institutions to America, a phase of our development which for a time has achieved a somewhat dimmed significance in a nationalistic enthusiasm to find the conditioning influence of our development in that confusion and lawlessness of our own frontier, but also because of the influence of the Quakers in the development df our law. While the general pat- tern of the criminal law transferred from England to Pennsylvania did not differ from that of the other colonies, in that the law and the courts they evolved to administer the law, like the form of their cur- rency, their methods of farming, the games they played, were part of their English cultural heritage, the Quakers did arrive in the new land with a new concept of the end of the criminal law, and proceeded immediately to give force to this concept by statutory enactment.1 The result may be stated simply. Religions and the abolition of slavery - a comparative approach William G. Clarence-Smith Economic historians tend to see religion as justifying servitude, or perhaps as ameliorating the conditions of slaves and serving to make abolition acceptable, but rarely as a causative factor in the evolution of the ‘peculiar institution.’ In the hallowed traditions, slavery emerges from scarcity of labour and abundance of land. This may be a mistake. If culture is to humans what water is to fish, the relationship between slavery and religion might be stood on its head. It takes a culture that sees certain human beings as chattels, or livestock, for labour to be structured in particular ways. If religions profoundly affected labour opportunities in societies, it becomes all the more important to understand how perceptions of slavery differed and changed. It is customary to draw a distinction between Christian sensitivity to slavery, and the ingrained conservatism of other faiths, but all world religions have wrestled with the problem of slavery. Moreover, all have hesitated between sanctioning and condemning the 'embarrassing institution.' Acceptance of slavery lasted for centuries, and yet went hand in hand with doubts, criticisms, and occasional outright condemnations. Hinduism The roots of slavery stretch back to the earliest Hindu texts, and belief in reincarnation led to the interpretation of slavery as retribution for evil deeds in an earlier life. Servile status originated chiefly from capture in war, birth to a bondwoman, sale of self and children, debt, or judicial procedures. Caste and slavery overlapped considerably, but were far from being identical. Brahmins tried to have themselves exempted from servitude, and more generally to ensure that no slave should belong to 1 someone from a lower caste. -

BYNUM Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine EVENthe phrase ‘Victorian values’ is a reminder that historians write about themselves as well as the past. A volume with this title has different reverberations for us than it would have had for a historian of Lytton Strachey’s generation, and even the inclusion of a paper on medicine testifies to recent changes in historical perceptions and practice. Neither science nor medicine rated a chapter in G.M. Young’s Early Victorian Britain, and only three decades ago, Walter Houghton’s Victorian Frame of Mind contained but one brief reference to medicine and only cursory material on what is now seen as a much more central Victorian preoccupation: health.1 The army doctor and sanitary reformer Edmund Parkes (1819-1875) was speaking as a Victorian as much as he was as a doctor when he urged young doctors ‘Never [to] think of your life, but always of your health, which alone can make life useful’.2 Parkes’s coupling of health and usefulness was high praise indeed, for usefulness could easily have served alongside Duty, Thrift and Self-Help as a marketable volume by that quintessential Victorian Samuel Smiles, himself of course originally a trained doctor. GEOFFREY NUTTALL Geoffrey Fillingham Nuttall 1911–2007 Formative influences GEOFFREY F. NUTTALL, ecclesiastical historian, was born 8 November 1911 and died 24 July 2007. Although it was his achievement as a histor ian, especially as an ecclesiastical historian, that ensured his election to the British Academy in 1991, he was educated as a classicist and he became a minister of religion. Pastoral ministry remained his vocation. To all outward appearance he followed a conventional career for a man of his background. His father was a general practitioner in a rising health resort. On both sides of his family there had been generations of parsons, professional men, superior tradesmen and prosperous farmers. Several of them were JPs. All were the sort to provide civic ballast for country towns nationwide. Geoffrey Nuttall took great pride in this. His understanding of it informed his work as a historian. His roots encom passed Cumberland, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Yorkshire. They were smalltown and rural but they incorporated a broader urban experience: Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Manchester. As with all such families, there was vicarious satisfaction in grand, if illdefined and distant, connections (the Listers of Gisburne, Barons Ribblesdale) and in links with industrial paternalism (Sir William Hartley, the jam manufacturer, was ‘Cousin Jam’; he was in fact Nuttall’s second cousin twice removed).1 There was a closer link with an intelligent bishop, 1 Sir William Hartley (1846–1922).
