Abstract: Pentecostal Missionary Training: Cultivating Body Logics, Converting Missionaries, Building A Movement Josh Brahinsky 2014 This dissertation explores missionary training pedagogies among the Assemblies of God (AG), a global pentecostal fellowship. Tensions between systematicity and the sensory manifesting via meticulous pedagogies, portable body logics, and evental ruptures contributed to AG’s growth from a few thousand to over 67 million in the past 100 years. “Missionary conversions” meant US missionaries transformed political- theology through encounter with postcolonial interlocutors and came home to provoke AG with newfound cultural sensitivity and compassion ministries. Similarly, pedagogy at AG's Bethany University inoculated students against secularism via encounter with it. Thus, AG shifted from rigid fundamentalism to a more fluid evangelicalism with kingdom theology challenging previous pessimistic premillenialisms. Bethany was closed through a schism between evangelical- pentecostals and fundamentalist-pentecostals in 2011. Tracing techniques that render bodies capable of mystical experience from 1800s radical evangelicals to current AG practice and its training manuals suggests that instead of “discipline” or the “Age of Mobilization,” cultivating tension between systematicity and the sensory characterizes modern evangelicalism, perhaps modernity itself. For pentecostals “cultivation” signals collective self-fashioning that vi! ! aspires towards skilled yielding to the Holy Spirit. As such, modern religiosity might be less about turning inward, than about inhabiting modern rationality. Further, pentecostal practice provides a foil for post-structural mobilization theories responding to similar tensions within modernity. Resonances between pentecostal missionary strategies and post-structural “agency,” “resistance,” and the “event” when thought with the pentecostal penchant for right wing politics suggests such strategies are politically empty. That pentecostals incite Western agency- anxiety with collective and yielded practices stretches agency to include explicit rendering of relational hierarchies and the recognition of scale effects and scale battles. In all, pentecostal volitional affect involves sedimenting practices of mutability into the bodies of practitioners via the rhythmic cellular thrumming of flesh, church, and doctrine. Here, ephemeral sensations and testimony solidify into durable sensibilities, aptitudes, and rites, congeal as tradition tied to training texts or scripture, and the crystalline structures enabling rupture - conversion, experience of spirit, and schism – emerge to catch the edges of modern capitalist proliferation and suggest a model for mobilization effective in a period of neoliberal globalization. vii! ! Outline: The dissertation is divided into four sections as follows: 1. Reciprocity - Fundamentalist AG missionaries go out into the world, come home changed, change their home churches and universities and cause a battle between fundamentalists and evangelicals within AG. Clarifies that distinctions between evangelical and fundamentalist might pivot upon differing sensibilities built from evangelism and separatism. 2. Cultivation – Describes the training mechanisms developed within AG and how they are disseminated and internalized by practitioners. Develops the notion of portable “body logics” as sedimented elements in pentecostal efforts to nurture and contain the sensory aptitudes that engage ruptural transformation. “Cultivation” is then described as pentecostal language for evangelism, modern historical process, and social science analytic entangling the systematic and the sensory and to varying degrees foregrounding varying sense ratios and consequential scales. Scale effects and scale battles might account for multiple analytics of pentecostal experience. 3. Mobilization Philosophy - Compares AG missiology to contemporary feminist and critical theory

    John Wimber, US, Pastor May 11. John Wimber. Prior to his conversion, John was part of a Los Angeles musical group called the Paramours, who later became the Righteous Brothers. But his life then was anything but righteous. He described himself as a beer-guzzler, a drug-abuser, and a chain smoker. After his conversion in a Quaker church, John became best known for his leadership in the Vineyard churches, churches with both evangelical and charismatic roots. Between his conversion and his tenure at the Vineyard, John led multiple Bible studies and taught at a seminary. In 1977, John planted the Calvary Chapel of Yorba Linda. On this date in 1980, the Holy Spirit fell on Calvary Chapel. In 1982, Calvary Chapel was renamed Anaheim Vineyard, and it became the flagship church of the Vineyard movement, a movement that spread first across the US, and then across the globe. Here’s his story. Christ calls us to die, so we can live. On his knees, John Wimber scrubbed the oil residue from the inside of another barrel. It had only been a few months since he was John Wimber—the accomplished musician, known for touring the Las Vegas nightclub circuit in various show bands, his successful arrangements, and for his role in the creation of the The Righteous Brothers. Now, he was John Wimber, the man who worked at a manufacturing plant and cleaned oil from the inside of used barrels. One day, an old friend of John’s from the music business heard that he was working at this manufacturing plant and decided to pay him a visit.

    MODERNISM – FUNDAMENTALISM – NEW EVANGELICALISM AND BIBLICAL INERRANCY The purpose of this paper is to give a partial history of the age-old battle for the Bible. My prayer is that we settle two major truths in our hearts and minds: the sufficiency of God’s Word, and the sufficiency of the Holy Spirit to empower all who share belief in the verbal inspiration, infallibility, and inerrancy of God’s Word. The word inerrancy is used repeatedly in this paper for clarity. The word infallibility is used by some to define limited inerrancy. Dr. Harold Lindsell's book, "The Battle for the Bible," holds to this strong view of Biblical inerrancy as the watershed issue in the evangelical world. Throughout the history of mankind, we have had two major lines of development. One has followed man’s way in what we might call the wisdom of this world or the way of the natural man. The other major line of development is God’s way, which follows after the revealed wisdom of God’s inerrant Word, and this is the way of the spiritual man. THE BEGINNINGS OF THEOLOGICAL MODERNISM Theological modernism (or liberalism) had its origin in Europe, particularly in Germany, in the 19th century and was merely the rationalistic thinking of that time applied to the Bible. It was the dawn of the scientific era. Many men felt they were on the verge of discovering the secrets of the universe and solving the problems of mankind. Anti-Christian thinkers such as Darwin, Hegel, and Marx led the movement to dethrone God and replace Him with scientific humanism.

The ideological conflicts in the pages were, to him, a “sign of life” in an otherwise lonely and impersonal cosmos.1 For some, the ongoing skirmishes between traditionalists and reformists over evangel- ical boundaries might seem to be a sign of life in a movement questing for an identity after Billy Graham and Carl F. H. Henry. For both sides of the divide, however, the issues raised by “post-conservative” proposals represent a challenge to the uneasy consensus of the postwar movement. For reform- ists, the post-conservative proposals are true to the heritage of evangelical theology as a movement initiated for the reformation of American fundamen- talism. And yet, recent developments reveal that the evangelical left may be pushing evangelical theology away from the theological consensus around the centrality of the Kingdom of God that the founders of evangelicalism sought to establish and saw developed into a full-blown consensus by the end of the century. And, in so doing, post-conservative proposals represent an ironic re- gression to the doctrinal reductionism of twentieth-century fundamentalism. i. post-conservative proposals and the development of evangelical theology Like evangelicalism itself, the “post-conservative” or “reformist” strands within the movement are difficult to define with precision.     NEW EVANGELICALISM: A REVIEW Tom's Perspectives by Thomas Ice Paul Smith, the younger brother of Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel fame, has written an important new book entitled, New Evangelicalism: The New World Order.1 In this book, Smith identifies the snares that threaten to destroy the effectiveness of Bible- believing, gospel preaching, Bible teaching churches, like those within his own Calvary Chapel movement. New Evangelicalism traces the roots for the last hundred years that lurk on the horizon and threaten biblical churches today, by demonstrating how too many evangelicals have already swallowed the poison. Smith not only exposes the problem, which is abandonment of the inerrancy of Scripture, but what the solution is and how it can revive our evangelical churches. ORIGINS OF THE PROBLEM Peter Drucker, the management guru, is identified as the key player that influenced the rise of the church growth movement at Fuller Seminary, which lead to many anti- gospel influences within evangelicalism. Smith demonstrates historically that the existential philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard influenced Drucker leading to his pragmatic theory and approach to community and the church’s role in his ideal community. Karl Barth, the famous Swiss neo-orthodox theologian, also drank heavily of Kierkegaard, who in turn captivated Daniel Fuller, the son of Charles Fuller who founded Fuller Seminary in 1947. Even though Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California got off to a good start, by the 1960s the Seminary had abandoned inerrancy and started down the slippery slope to modern liberalism. Smith notes that former Fuller faculty member Harold Lindsell documented the Seminary’s demise and abandonment of inerrancy in his famous book entitled, The Battle for the Bible in 1976.2 Smith provides much more extensive detail of the philosophical and historical backgrounds leading up to the rapid theological demise of Fuller Seminary, which sets the stage for why that school has been at the epicenter of many of the influences that plagued evangelicalism for the last three decades.
