THE TIKVAH FUND Judaism and Politics on Campus: An Orientation A Tikvah Program for Rising First-Year College Students August 12-15, 2019 The Tikvah Center, 165 E. 56th St., New York City A select group of Tikvah alumni who are entering college in Fall 2019 will join us for an intensive conference focused on Jewish life, Israel, and the great debates at today’s colleges and universities. This program will be a last stop before they enter college – a time to build community, to be inspired again by Jewish ideas and Jewish civilization, and to think hard about their own calling to serve the Jewish people at this critical juncture in their lives. More particularly, it is a unique opportunity: • To debate ideas, texts, and current event issues with other college-bound Tikvah alumni from our Tikvah Scholars, Maimonides Scholars, and Israel Overseas programs. • To meet current undergraduates, graduate students, and young professionals from the broader Tikvah network, who will share their experiences as Jewish and pro-Israel leaders and provide practical advice about how to get the most out of college and about how to apply the big ideas learned at Tikvah to practical challenges facing the Jewish community. • To hear from some of the nation’s leading thinkers and activists in the Jewish and pro-Israel world—including Princeton University’s R.J. Snell, Harvard professor emeritus and Tikvah Senior Fellow Ruth Wisse, Tikvah alumnus and founder of the Philos Project Robert Nicholson, and highly acclaimed novelist and essayist Dara Horn. Our Mutual Commitment: Our pledge to you is that the program will be excellent and that the teachers are, in every case, among the best people in the world teaching the subjects they are teaching. Your pledge to us is that you will invest yourselves in the texts and the seminars and do the work to the fullest extent of your talents. You have chosen to spend your time with us, so we know you come to us with great interest and commitment. We will insist that you continue that commitment—a commitment to attending each and every session, a commitment to coming to class on time, and a commitment to doing all the readings. If anyone fails to honor his or her commitment, he or she will be dismissed from the program.
