Head Coach Fred Featherstone 22nd year Co-Head Coach Travis Lee 3rd year Assistant Coach Jimmy Lopez 4th year Assistant Coach Mike Ortiz 1st year

11-0013-016 HEAD COACH - FRED FEATHERSTONE Coach Featherstone will be entering his twenty-second year coaching the Griffins. 2011 will be Coach Featherstone’s final year of coaching at Grossmont College. Last spring, Featherstone was selected to the Community College Men’s Volleyball Hall of Fame. During Featherstone’s tenure, Grossmont has secured three, third place finishes at the State Tournament (1994, 1999 and 2000); one Orange Empire Conference Championship (2000) with the men and one Pacific Coast Conference Championship as the women’s head coach in 1995. He has led the Griffs to thirteen post-season playoff berths since 1990. In addition, he has been named Conference Coach of the year in ‘94, ‘98, ‘00 with men and ‘95 with the Lady Griffs. In ‘07, Featherstone was chosen Pacific Coast Conference All Sports Coach of the Year after leading the men’s team to a 13-5 record. Featherstone's career record at Grossmont College stands at 203 wins and 181 losses.

Featherstone’s coaching career at Grossmont began the same year (1990) that he founded the Seaside Boys Junior Olympic Development Program in San Diego County. Seaside has achieved unprecedented regional and national success under Featherstone's leadership. The club has medaled ten times at the U.S. Junior Olympics including four national championships (‘92, ‘97, 2006 and 2010). Seaside has sent over 250 boys to college programs including five players who have gone on to the U.S. Olympic team. Featherstone had the privilege of coaching three current starters from Team USA: , , and , when they were junior club players; and, two former Griffin stars: Ben Bodipo and James Hammerstrand, who played for the U.S. National Team in the early nineties. In addition, Featherstone coached current AVP Pro Beach star Matt Olson at Grossmont; Houston Rockets basketball player Chase Budinger; and last year’s NCAA co-player of the year from UCLA, Garrett Muagututia when they competed for Seaside VBC. Coach Featherstone prepped at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California where he formed the school’s first boys volleyball program in 1964. He was playing in the famous Manhattan Open Beach Doubles Tournament as a teen. Prior to coming to Grossmont, Coach Featherstone led the United States International University (USIU) Women’s Division I team into the NCAA Tournament in 1986; led the La Jolla High School boys team to the CIF Finals in 1973-74; and steered the Southwestern College Men’s Volleyball Team to runner-up finishes in the Old Pacific Coast Athletic Association in 1976-77. In 1991, Fred was Head Coach of the West Team in the Summer Olympic Festival in Los Angeles. Fred’s overall college victory total stands at 308. Featherstone was a three-sport athlete (football, track, volleyball) at San Diego State and has won numerous beach tournaments over the years. In Featherstone’s words: “Volleyball has been my life; I have no regrets. I’ve had a good run. I’ve given everything I have to the sport and feel blessed to have grown up enjoying the So Cal lifestyle, mainly, surfing and volleyball. It’s now time to step aside and let the current young guys take over.” Fred and wife Cheryl plan to retire in The East Cape, Los Cabos, Mexico.

2 CO-HEAD COACH - TRAVIS LEE

Grossmont welcomes Travis Lee back in 2011. The plan for 2011 is for Travis to assist Coach Featherstone with the head coaching duties. Travis played for the Griffins in ‘06 and ‘07 and earned All Pacific Coast Conference honors as an outside hitter. Lee came to Grossmont College from Grossmont High School where he was All Grossmont League in 2005. In ‘07, Travis was selected Most Valuable Player for the Griffins. Since ‘06, Travis has been coaching for Seaside Volleyball Club and Shorebreak VBC, at the middle school and early high school levels. Coach Featherstone states, “Travis brings a lot of enthusiasm and passion to the gym every day. He is an outstanding player and is developing into one of the more respected young coaches in the county. In addition to working with our program, he is also teaching full time at Johnson Elementary School in El Cajon.”

ASSISTANT COACH - MIKE ORTIZ

A new addition to the Griffin staff in 2011, Mike played for the Griffs in ‘04 and ‘05. He went on to play for UC Irvine where he was a member of their ‘07 National Championship, Division I Anteater team. Mike has coached club boys volleyball for the past three years--two with Seaside VBC and currently with Shorebreak VBC. In addi- tion, Mike has been the assistant boy’s varsity volleyball coach at Grossmont High School. Grossmont reached the CIF finals in 2010. Mike’s primary job will be assisting Travis with all operational duties of the program and training the middle blockers.

ASSISTANT COACH - JIMMY LOPEZ

In ‘11, former Griffin setter Jimmy Lopez begins his fourth season as a Griffin assistant coach. Selected to the Orange Empire Conference First Team in ‘06, Jimmy backed that up in ‘07 with a First Team All Pacific Coast Conference spot. At 34 years of age, Jimmy brings a lot of adult maturity to the assistant’s position. Aside from an illustrious playing career as an international setter, Jimmy has also coached at Sweetwater High School (‘03), Coronado High School (‘04), and Monte Vista High School (‘05). Jimmy coached for Seaside VBC, as well, in ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09. Recently, Jimy competed with Mexico at the Norceca’s and as a player in his native country, Mexico, Jimmy’s teams--one a junior high school team--won two National Club Team Championships in Colima, Mexico in ‘93 and an Adult Open Championship in ‘01 in Sinaloa, Mexico. In addition, Jimmy has played extensively for the famous Mikaza and Ensenada Spikers International Club Teams and won the prestigious Estero Beach Doubles Tournament in ‘05. Jimmy is a AAA beach player. At Grossmont, Jimmy was chosen team MVP by his teammates in both ‘06 and ‘07. In Featherstone’s words, “Jimmy brings years of on-court knowledge as a setter to the Grossmont program. Quite sim- ply, he was the most experienced setter to ever play for me in 20 years of coaching. I welcome him back to our program. Having him around to tutor our setters will be a big plus for us again in 2011.”

5 GRIFFIN MEN’S VOLLEYBALL 2011 SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2011 men’s team will be a predominantly freshman-laden squad, as only two players, outside player Jose Mendoza and libero, Dane Raleigh, return to lead the Griffins.

Finishing 7-11 in 2010, the Griffins hope to improve in 2011 with more quality depth than the previous three seasons. As many as eighteen players may suit up this spring for the Griffins. Competition for starting spots will stiffen and this should make for an interesting season. Co-Head Coach Travis Lee likes what he sees: “Our freshmen group is solid and deep. We have good setting to replace All Conference standout Sezer Dundar and we have good size and ability in the middle and on the right side. Our left side play has to improve, however, if we plan on making the playoffs. Finally, our libero play should be fine as we have depth there as well.”

In 2011, Grossmont will be home for three players who have played briefly with the Mexican National team, outside hitter, Jose Mendoza (2nd in total kills in C.C. volleyball in 2010); opposite Diego Bustos; and middle blocker Jorge Cabrera, who was one of the county’s top prep players last year at Hoover High School. All three were party to teams that won the Mexican National Olympics. In Featherstone’s words, “Jose was a dominant player in the conference last year and Diego and Jorge are every bit as good, yet bigger and more versatile. Simply put, these guys can play.”

Other outside hitters include Jason Guarnes, freshman from Otay Ranch H.S.; Luke Baxter, freshman from Valhalla High School; and Justin Simmons, a transfer from Colorado State. All three will vie for playing time with Mendoza on the left side. Only Guarnes has high level experience but Baxter and Simmons are capable and will improve a great deal this spring.

In the middle, the Griffs could play as many as five players including Jake Haar (Grossmont H.S.), who will come in after the basketball season from Cuyamaca College. Bustos (Tijuana Prep) and Cabrera will play there as will Shalimar Buchanan (Bonita Vista H.S.) and Devin Lesch (El Cajon Valley H.S.). Buchanan is a Div. I prospect at 6’6”. Lesch (6’6”) can block and is improving as an attacker. Buchanan, like Cabrera, was one of the County’s top high school players in 2010. Bustos, Cabrera, and Buchanan can all play right side as well. Cabrera can also play left. He has a lot of International experience with his native country, Mexico. Bustos, extremely versatile as well, will vie for a starting spot in the middle or right side.

Also on the right will be Connor Jopson (Clairemont H.S.). Vastly improved, his is pushing for court time with Bustos and Buchanan.

Dane Raleigh returns at the libero position and will complete with Kyle Wulff (Otay Ranch H.S.) for the starting spot. Wulff is transferring in from S.D. Mesa College where he started in ‘09. Both will see considerable playing time and should be able to play with the conference’s elite liberos.

At the setting position, Grossmont is solid with freshmen Shane Beatty (Granite Hills H.S.) and Eduardo Carrillo (Montgomery H.S.). Beatty has a lot of high-level club experience. He led the Seaside VBC 17 and under team to a National Championship last summer. Carrillo also played for Seaside (South Country program) and has great hands. Guarnes, Baxter, Wulff, Jopson, and Buchanan all played junior club ball with Seaside as well.

In conclusion, the coaching staff--which includes former Grififin and recent Grossmont H.S.assistant, Mike Ortiz, is encouraged by what they see in early-season practice time. Nevertheless, the 2011 Griffins men’s volleyball team will need to be much improved over 2010 if they have any hopes of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Mesa and City have improved and Palomar is always solid. In Orange County, Irvine Valley, Orange Coast, and Golden West never have down years. To win a championship, in any year, the road goes through those traditional power houses. 2011 will be no exception.

In Coach Featherstone’s words: “The talent is there. The big questions are: How will they handle adversity; who will emerge as team leaders; how much do they collectively want to sacrifice--mentally and physically--to compete against all their opponents.”As in every year, it will be interesting.”
