Last spring, Featherstone was selected to the Community College Men’s Volleyball Hall of Fame. During Featherstone’s tenure, Grossmont has secured three, third place finishes at the State Tournament (1994, 1999 and 2000); one Orange Empire Conference Championship (2000) with the men and one Pacific Coast Conference Championship as the women’s head coach in 1995. He has led the Griffs to thirteen post-season playoff berths since 1990. In addition, he has been named Conference Coach of the year in ‘94, ‘98, ‘00 with men and ‘95 with the Lady Griffs. In ‘07, Featherstone was chosen Pacific Coast Conference All Sports Coach of the Year after leading the men’s team to a 13-5 record. Featherstone's career record at Grossmont College stands at 203 wins and 181 losses. Featherstone’s coaching career at Grossmont began the same year (1990) that he founded the Seaside Boys Junior Olympic Development Program in San Diego County. Seaside has achieved unprecedented regional and national success under Featherstone's leadership. The club has medaled ten times at the U.S. Junior Olympics including four national championships (‘92, ‘97, 2006 and 2010). Seaside has sent over 250 boys to college programs including five players who have gone on to the U.S. Olympic team. Featherstone had the privilege of coaching three current starters from Team USA: Richard Lambourne, David Lee, and Reid Priddy, when they were junior club players; and, two former Griffin stars: Ben Bodipo and James Hammerstrand, who played for the U.S. National Team in the early nineties. In addition, Featherstone coached current AVP Pro Beach star Matt Olson at Grossmont; Houston Rockets basketball player Chase Budinger; and last year’s NCAA co-player of the year from UCLA, Garrett Muagututia when they competed for Seaside VBC. Coach Featherstone prepped at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California where he formed the school’s first boys volleyball program in 1964. He was playing in the famous Manhattan Open Beach Doubles Tournament as a teen. Prior to coming to Grossmont, Coach Featherstone led the United States International University (USIU) Women’s Division I team into the NCAA Tournament in 1986; led the La Jolla High School boys team to the CIF Finals in 1973-74; and steered the Southwestern College Men’s Volleyball Team to runner-up finishes in the Old Pacific Coast Athletic Association in 1976-77. In 1991, Fred was Head Coach of the West Team in the Summer Olympic Festival in Los Angeles. Fred’s overall college victory total stands at 308. Featherstone was a three-sport athlete (football, track, volleyball) at San Diego State and has won numerous beach tournaments over the years. In Featherstone’s words: “Volleyball has been my life; I have no regrets. I’ve had a good run. I’ve given everything I have to the sport and feel blessed to have grown up enjoying the So Cal lifestyle, mainly, surfing and volleyball. It’s now time to step aside and let the current young guys take over.” Fred and wife Cheryl plan to retire in The East Cape, Los Cabos, Mexico. 2 CO-HEAD COACH - TRAVIS LEE Grossmont welcomes Travis Lee back in 2011. The plan for 2011 is for Travis to assist Coach Featherstone with the head coaching duties. Travis played for the Griffins in ‘06 and ‘07 and earned All Pacific Coast Conference honors as an outside hitter. Lee came to Grossmont College from Grossmont High School where he was All Grossmont League in 2005. In ‘07, Travis was selected Most Valuable Player for the Griffins. Since ‘06, Travis has been coaching for Seaside Volleyball Club and Shorebreak VBC, at the middle school and early high school levels. Coach Featherstone states, “Travis brings a lot of enthusiasm and passion to the gym every day. He is an outstanding player and is developing into one of the more respected young coaches in the county. In addition to working with our program, he is also teaching full time at Johnson Elementary School in El Cajon.” ASSISTANT COACH - MIKE ORTIZ A new addition to the Griffin staff in 2011, Mike played for the Griffs in ‘04 and ‘05. He went on to play for UC Irvine where he was a member of their ‘07 National Championship, Division I Anteater team. Mike has coached club boys volleyball for the past three years--two with Seaside VBC and currently with Shorebreak VBC. In addi- tion, Mike has been the assistant boy’s varsity volleyball coach at Grossmont High School. Grossmont reached the CIF finals in 2010. Mike’s primary job will be assisting Travis with all operational duties of the program and training the middle blockers. ASSISTANT COACH - JIMMY LOPEZ In ‘11, former Griffin setter Jimmy Lopez begins his fourth season as a Griffin assistant coach. Selected to the Orange Empire Conference First Team in ‘06, Jimmy backed that up in ‘07 with a First Team All Pacific Coast Conference spot. At 34 years of age, Jimmy brings a lot of adult maturity to the assistant’s position. Aside from an illustrious playing career as an international setter, Jimmy has also coached at Sweetwater High School (‘03), Coronado High School (‘04), and Monte Vista High School (‘05). Jimmy coached for Seaside VBC, as well, in ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09. Recently, Jimy competed with Mexico at the Norceca’s and as a player in his native country, Mexico, Jimmy’s teams--one a junior high school team--won two National Club Team Championships in Colima, Mexico in ‘93 and an Adult Open Championship in ‘01 in Sinaloa, Mexico. In addition, Jimmy has played extensively for the famous Mikaza and Ensenada Spikers International Club Teams and won the prestigious Estero Beach Doubles Tournament in ‘05. Jimmy is a AAA beach player. At Grossmont, Jimmy was chosen team MVP by his teammates in both ‘06 and ‘07. In Featherstone’s words, “Jimmy brings years of on-court knowledge as a setter to the Grossmont program. Quite sim- ply, he was the most experienced setter to ever play for me in 20 years of coaching. I welcome him back to our program. Having him around to tutor our setters will be a big plus for us again in 2011.” 3 Grossmont College Salutes Ben Bodipo - MEMBO Former Griffin (‘90) Scott Downey James Hammerstrand U.S. Olympic Festival Participant Former Griffin (‘96, ‘98) Former Griffin (‘92) Men’s “B” Team National 1994-95 U.S. Olympic Festival (‘98) Men’s National Team 1994-96 Jeff Hall John Hawks Former Griffin (‘02-‘06) Former Griffin (‘93, ‘94) Asst. And rightfully so. They keep adding to their resumes with significant honors – most recently, Taylor’s 4-Star FIVB tournament with Jake Gibb (November in Chetumal,W Mexico) and Trevor’s sublime triumph at the Manhattan Beach Open last August. But while Taylor and Trevor won a few NORCECAs playing together, they could never capture an AVP or FIVB title, which, in part, led them to seek different partners. The Crabbs are not the only elite brother combo (see page 22) to seek the pro beach volleyball limelight. In fact, the most intriguing set of siblings may be the Partains, 19-year-old Marcus and 18-year-old Miles. Together, they were the youngest team to make an AVP main draw, which they achieved in Hermosa Beach, California, in July of 2017. Separately, Miles, at 15 years and seven I do (get excited when Miles months, became the youngest individual to ever make an AVP main draw. “ But it wasn’t until this past fall that Miles really broke out. He finished fifth in a fully loaded plays well). Regardless of AVP Chicago event with Paul Lotman, who at the time was twice as old as his precocious partner. Nevertheless, Miles’ poise under fire was truly exceptional.

  • USA Profile.Qxd
USA TEAM PROFILE - Men’s The U.S. Men’s national Volleyball team is looking to regain some of the shine that it had when it won three straight Olympic medals in Los Angeles (gold in 1984), Seoul, South Korea (gold in 1988) and Barcelona, Spain (bronze in 1992).To get to that point, however, Hall of Fame head coach Doug Beal needs more consistency from a relatively young team that went 19-17 in 2002 and fin- ished ninth at the World Championships in Argentina. At that tournament the men won their first four matches, including a come-from-behind five-set thriller over eventual world champion Brazil, and was in a perfect position to reach the quarterfinals. But a crushing five-set loss to Greece and a four-game setback to Serbia and Montenegro in the final match of the second round ended the sea- son for Team USA. The men, ranked No. 13 in the world to start this new year, showed glimpses of its potential to return to the upper echelon of the Volleyball world last season, posting wins over three of the top four teams in the world (No. 2 Brazil, No. 3 Serbia and Montenegro and No. 4 Italy). But losses to teams like No. 20 Bulgaria, No. 20 Canada and No. 19 Czech Republic revealed the dark side of the team’s potential. Young talent like Brook Billings, Clay Stanley, Jim Polster, Adam Naeve, Dave McKienzie, Reid Priddy and Chris Seiffert all emerged as possible players that Beal can depend on this coming season.
