The Broadway Olympia family is excited to bring you a celebration of epic proportions. Welcome to the show! Like many hit Broadway shows (including an upcoming selection in our season, Young Frankenstein), The Wedding Singer debuted at the 5th Ave in Seattle before going to Broadway, which gave many local theater fans an opportunity for a sneak peak at the Tony nominated musical. When I was offered a ticket by a close friend, accepting was a no brainer. Having grown up a fan of musicals, 80’s pop culture, and Adam Sandler, I jumped at the opportunity to see my worlds collide. I was presented with two hours of 80’s rocking, heart pumping hilarity, and a song that stuck in my head for three weeks. I felt like I had been part of a celebration. The athletic dancing, the soaring harmonies, the bright colors, and about a thousand 80’s pop culture references created an atmosphere of a wild party. When Lexi Barnett suggested we do this show on Valentines day, it made perfect sense. We wanted to deliver a strong rock element in our season, and The Wedding Singer fit the bill. While inclement weather, a shortened rehearsal process and police standoffs on I-5 (which resulted in some of our actors spending five hours driving to rehearsal) have made this a challenging process for the cast and creative team, the effort put forth has been second to none, and you’ll see this reflected in the energy of the performance. And we know you’ll see it in the actors’ smiles. Thank you for supporting the arts, and enjoy the show! ...Kyle Murphy Managing Director OFFICIAL PROGRAM BY OLY ARTS Cast Robbie Hart Jake Atwood Julia Sullivan Brittany Griffins Sammy . .Brett Hartman Holly Lizzy Stone George . This book spill off the page in all directions, kaleidoscope of vistas, medley of tunes and street noises […]” William Burroughs, The Naked Lunch, 1959. Introduction 1 The urban landscape occupies a specific position in Bowie’s works. His lyrics are fraught with references to “city landscape[s]”5 and urban nightscapes. The metropolis provides not only the object of a diegetic and spectatorial gaze but it also enables the author to further a discourse on his own inner fragmented self as the nexus, lyrics— music—city, offers an extremely rich avenue for investigating and addressing key issues such as alienation, loneliness, nostalgia and death in a postmodern cultural context.

  • The Appropriation and Packaging of Riot Grrrl Politics by Mainstream Female Musicians
Popular Music and Society, Vol. 26, No. 1, 2003 “A Little Too Ironic”: The Appropriation and Packaging of Riot Grrrl Politics by Mainstream Female Musicians Kristen Schilt “RIOT GIRL IS: BECAUSE I believe with my wholeheartmindbody that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can, and will, change the world for real” (“Riot Grrrl Is” 44) “Girl power!” (Spice Girls) Introduction Female rock musicians have had difficulty making it in the predominantly white male rock world. Joanne Gottlieb and Gayle Wald note that women’s participation in rock music usually consists of bolstering male performance, in the roles of groupie, girlfriend, or back-up singer (257). Even in punk rock, women are often treated as a novelty by the music press and cultural critics. Male bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Damned achieve rock notoriety while their female counterparts, like the Slits and the Raincoats, sink into obscurity. However, 1995 saw an explosion in the music press about a new group of female musicians: the angry women. Hailed in popular magazines for blending feminism and rock music, Alanis Morissette topped the charts in 1995. Affectionately named the “screech queen” by Newsweek, Morissette combined angry, sexually graphic lyrics with catchy pop music (Chang 79). She was quickly followed by Tracy Bonham, Meredith Brooks, and Fiona Apple. Though they differed in musical style, this group of musicians embodied what it meant to be a woman expressing anger through rock music, according to the music press. Popular music magazines argued that musicians like Morissette were creating a whole new genre for female performers, one that allowed them to assert their ideas about feminism and sexual- ity.
