Of course, it’s great to be able to visit towns and cities again but please remember our local traders who are the very heart of our village. Although in recent years we’ve lost two of our pubs, at least temporarily, we still have some great places for a drink with friends and family. In the village centre we are lucky to have The Black Bull with outside seating. They will be open on Thursdays from 3 to 9pm and Friday to Sunday from 12 to 9pm. Please note that the carpark will be closed on those days. Call 01484 608111 to make bookings which are essential. The Toss o’ Coin on Penistone Road will open from 12pm onwards Friday to Sunday, for drinking only at the moment. They have a large beer garden and with good weather, this is a lovely place to have a drink with wonderful views over the surrounding fields. They plan to be back to normal with their popular indoor meals from the 17th of May when government restrictions are due to be eased further. One of the regular supporters of Shepley’s Magazine is The Rose and Crown at Thurstonland, another popular pub with a great reputation.     Shepley's Magazine Free to every Shepley household Issue No 22: September 2020 Page 1 Photograph by Ron Leather Page 2 Dear Readers As this editorial is written, in the middle of August, Covid- 19 infection numbers are once again rising in Kirklees but thankfully here in Shepley and Shelley there have been no new reported infections in the past week. Normality seems so close in some ways, yet change has happened in other areas, possibly permanently. Online shopping deliveries have boomed but many high street shops have struggled and unfortunately are now facing closure with the resultant unemployment of thousands of people. It seems that even after Covid- 19, shopping deliveries will be the way of the future. A positive aspect of this is that air pollution caused by endless visits to supermarkets and town centres will be reduced. Local shops should survive this revolution and we are thankful that here in Shepley we are lucky to have the Co-op with friendly and helpful staff who, in recent times, have had to deal with some difficult situations in-store. They deserve our thanks and gratitude. Please support them whenever you can. During lockdown some of us have tried growing fruit and vegetables in our gardens or even just in plant pots. Shepley’s weather has not been conducive to amazing crops this year with hot dry spells and then downpours. Despite this, some of us are reaping the rewards with wonderful produce to grace the table. Next year, perhaps, we will learn from any mistakes and do even better.

    The Goldthorpes of Shepley. By William Oates Goldthorp Goldthorpe is now a horrible small ex-mining town about 10 miles west of Doncaster, once part of the Arthur Scargill’s Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire, which I often drove through on the way to visit my relatives in Lincolnshire. The nicest thing about it, is the new bypass. They were the Top Dogs in Shepley. Inheritance was usually by primogeniture, the oldest surviving son and next the surviving daughter getting the lot unless the father made special provision for his younger children in his will. Even after they were no longer top dogs, the cadet branches continuing around Shepley did not fall to the very bottom of the social heap. I use my medical and obstetric back ground to make this statement. There was enough food on the family table to produce sturdy healthy young men who attracted the attention of sturdy healthy, well developed and shapely young ladies. Just look at the reproductive history. There are no second marriages, so the ladies would be well fed, strong and healthy, not succumbing to the 1 in 15 women dying in labour. Then there is the appearance of the first child within a year of marriage and others regularly every two years after that. They would suffer the usual high infant death rate of all families, but sufficient remain to spread far and wide. Robert’s son and heir married Alice, daughter of Laurence Kaye of Woodsome. In April the coronavirus COVID-19 presented us, the magazine team, with a difficult decision: the lockdown came just as we received delivery of the printed magazines. We made the difficult decision to deliver the magazine within our daily exercise period but this raised concern with some of our residents for which we apologise. Each month we check with our delivery team and reconsider all the issues and at present we are still delivering the magazine. In addition, we have now managed to provide online access to a digital copy of the magazine on the village website at www.shepleyvillage.org/village-magazine. Initially we had this provision but recently we have been unable to post new versions. We are still working on the site but you should have access to a PDF version which will work on any device however the flip book magazine works on most but not all devices. We still believe the paper copy is the best for connecting Shepley as not everyone has access or the knowledge to download a digital copy. Should our area’s status change to a higher Covid Alert Level than the current Level 4 we may need to consider other methods of delivering the magazine to you. If this should happen look for posts on Shepley’s social media and posters around the village informing you of how to get your magazine copy.
