1 ABBOTT FAMILY James Abbott (1750-1814) ABBOTT FAMILY James Abbott (1750-1814), number 69 in the 10th generation from William (1470) in this listing, was not only the first of the Abbott family to settle in Groton, Vermont, but was also the first “permanent settler” in Groton according to Waldo Glover’s research published in Mr. Glover’s Groton in 1978. James and his first wife Zelpha (Smith) were married 29 Mar 1781 in Concord, Rockingham Co., NH where they were both born. They moved north to Haverhill, Grafton Co., NH where their first two children were born in 1782 and 1783. Later they moved Groton where their third child, Sally, was born 25 Aug 1784, the first birth recorded in Groton, and Zelpha died six days later, the first death recorded, with complications from childbirth. James married second Mehitable “Hitty” Hidden on 25 Jul 1785 in Groton and they had six children, four of which survived to adulthood. James purchased the proprietor right of James Warton in Groton in 1782, and became the only proprietor to settle in the town. He was elected to a committee of three to lay out necessary roads in 1788. He served on the board of selectmen when Groton was organized in 1797. The family first lived in a log house then about 1800 built a plank house near the Peacham-Groton cemetery. In 1807 he sold the farm to Ephraim Wesson, Jr. and moved to Ohio where he died about 1814 in Portsmouth, Scioto County. Generation One 1. William1 Abbott, b. abt 1470. Children: + 2 i. Tell ye your children ofit,—and let yonr children tell their children, and their children' another generation. Bible. Published by the Compiler, NORTH GREENFIELD, WISCONSIN. 1892. PR.OV yxrt-6 I JOHNSON. PREFACE. From the summit of Sinai thousands of years ago, in the midst of thunderings and lightnings, Jehovah gave to the human race a moral code to be observed by the people of every land, and of every clime throughout all ages, and a part of this code proclaimed to every man and woman and child, "Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee." The duty enjoined in this commandment includes in its requirement not only respect, and kindness and honor to parents while living, but a kind and honorable remembrance also of ancestors who have departed. Hence it is becoming and appropriate in the members of a family line to collect and pre serve and transmit to posterity the history of their progenitors. The work of the genealogist is to trace ancestral lines, and to connect one generation withanother during a succession of years, to gather items ofinterest in connection with each family, and to preserve a correct and reliable history of the descendants of a remote ancestor.
