The Sorrow of Belgium FICTION The greatest classic in Flemish literature The Sorrow of Belgium HUGO CLAUS The monumental novel ‘The Sorrow of Belgium’ is set in the late 1930s and World War II. It focuses on the young Louis Seynaeve, who tries to escape from a Flemish petit-bourgeois environment in which morality is bent to suit self-interest and in which the father has no qualms about working for the Germans as a printer. One of the landmark European novels of AUTHOR the post-war era J.M. COETZEE This Bildungsroman is also a social document about political and social misfortune in Flanders before, during, and after World War II. In particular, it is a look from within at the man-in-the-street in wartime and at the circumstances that gave rise to collaboration. Louis avoids the lure of fascism through his innate anarchism and ORIGINAL TITLE Het verdriet van intellectual insight; in this, he is a typical Claus protagonist. It would take on his design innovations and his revolutionary approach to text and theatrical ambiance as well as chart the relationships with specific theatres and theatre companies of this, one of the most prominent theatre iconoclasts alive today. Van Hove is particularly important in that he acts as one of the few long-time “bridges” between European and American praxis. His career, in itself, represents a model of cross-fertilization, as he has brought European radical interpretation of classics to America and American organic acting to Europe. This book, as conceived would contain a generous number of images illustrating his productions and archive a wide cross-section of critical and analytical responses that have engaged in the controversies his work has engendered, as well as posit new, overarching hypotheses.

The Belgian Contribution to Global 1968 GERD-RAINER HORN ____Senior Lecturer in 20th Century History, Department of History – University of Warwick The calendar year of 1968 is almost universally associated with student un- rest. Belgium fits into this picture rather well, with major student mobilisa- tions in Leuven and Brussels occurring in the first half of that notoriously restless calendar year.1 Yet all-inclusive assessments of the social movements and political reconfigurations happening that year, not only in Belgium but elsewhere in Europe and North America as well, must go beyond the rela- tively narrow confines of university student milieus. For the purposes of this essay, I propose also to address fresh developments occurring within the worlds of labor and cultural productions.

The King and Queen and the other members of the Royal Family also represent Belgium abroad (state visits, eco- nomic missions and international meetings), while at home fostering close relations with their citizens and promoting public and private initiatives that make a contribution to improving society.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Sorrow of Belgium by Hugo Claus Hugo Claus. Belgium's leading writer, Hugo Claus, who has died aged 78 in hospital after suffering from Alzheimer's disease, was a major poet, novelist, dramatist, essayist and film-maker, who wrote hundreds of works and was best known for his semi-autobiographical novel The Sorrow of Belgium. Born in Bruges, he dropped out of school at 15 and, unhappy at home, left soon after for the second world war, working in a sugar factory for a while. He soon began writing poetry, joining the group of mostly Dutch poets often referred to as "the Fiftiers". As a visual artist - Claus was the son of a painter - he was also involved with the international art movement Cobra (which took its name from the first letters of the major cities of its proponents COpenhagen-BRussels-Amsterdam). In English, his Selected Poems 1953-1973 was published in Scotland in 1986 and a more recent collection, Greetings, in 2005. A large selection of his poetry also appeared in the volume Living Space: Poems of the Dutch Fiftiers in 2005. It is as a novelist, however, that Claus is best known to the English-speaking audience. His first novel, The Duck Hunt - a work inspired by William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying - was published in the US in 1955, and other works, The Swordfish (1996) and Desire (1997) followed. He is perhaps best known, however, for his 1983 masterwork, The Sorrow of Belgium, published by Penguin in 1991 and recently reprinted by the Overlook Press.

In this article, Herman Brusselmans is analysed as a star author. First and foremost, two striking aspects of Brusselmans’s stardom are analysed: his public visibility and the cult of the private. Attention is then focused on Brusselmans’s expe- rience of celebrity, which he – like many other star authors – thematises in his books. Doing so, he consciously places himself in the context of popular culture. On the other hand, as a result of his celebrity status he has been expected – particularly in the last few years – to assume the role of public intellectual willy-nilly, and this in turn has had consequences for his work.
