CURT KUNTZ ASSISTANT DEFENSIVE BACKS COLLEGE: KENT STATE NFL: SECOND SEASON DOLPHINS: SECOND SEASON Curt Kuntz enters his second season with the Dolphins after being named assistant defensive backs coach on Jan. 20, 2020. In his first season with Miami in 2020, Kuntz helped the defense rank sixth in the NFL in points allowed per game (21.1). The Dolphins led the NFL in takeaways (29) and third-down defense (31.2 pct.), winning 10 games for the first time since 2016. Cornerback Xavien Howard earned first-team All-Pro honors and the second Pro Bowl selection of his career after he tied the franchise record with 10 interceptions. It marked the first time an NFL player had double-digit interceptions since 2007 (Antonio Cromartie, 10). Kuntz spent eight seasons (2012-19) as the head coach of Struthers High School in Struthers, Ohio. During his tenure, he compiled a 53-31 record, won a conference championship and led the Wildcats to four playoff appearances, including three times in his final four seasons. Prior to Kuntz’s arrival at Struthers, the school had a nine-year streak without a win in league play. His four playoff appearances are the most by a coach in the history of the school. Kuntz has been groomed by some of the best coaches in Ohio, as he has coached under three members of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and a two-time Super Bowl champion defensive coordinator. Kuntz began his coaching career under John Nemec at Kent Roosevelt High School from 1997-98, where he coached offensive line and linebackers. From 1999-2001, Kuntz was a graduate assistant at Kent State, where he worked under Dean Pees. Pees is currently the defensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons and has 16 seasons of NFL coaching experience, including 12 as a defensive coordinator. He won Super Bowl XXXIX as defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots and Super Bowl XLVII as defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Kuntz served as the offensive line coach at Warren G. Harding High School from 2002-06 under Thom McDaniels. McDaniels is a member of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and was named High School Football Coach of the Year by USA Today in 1997. Kuntz earned his first offensive coordinator job at Howland High School, where he called offensive plays from 2007-08 under Dick Angle. Angle was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2009, Kuntz served as offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Newton Falls High School. He was the offensive line/linebackers coach at Poland High School from 2010-11 prior to becoming the head coach at Struthers High School in 2012. Kuntz and his wife, Jaclyn, have two daughters – Ava and Halle. His last name is pronounced KOO-nts.
