Colorado 2016 Highlights
Colorado 2016 Highlights Paleontology Paleontology Resource Education (BPS #1268): The Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO) is working with the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center to create the “Digging It, Fossils of Fremont County Exhibit”. The exhibit highlights the Marsh Quarry among several other historic quarries from the Garden Park Paleontological Area, as well as, various other fossil localities throughout the area and the individuals that worked the quarries. The Museum has developed programs for younger and older students that visit the exhibit that highlight the connection of these locations to public lands. The exhibit is based on the federal fossil collection that they are housing. The exhibit allows public access to parts of the collection. The RGFO and Museum together hosted a Federal Fossil Adoption Ceremony on August 10, 2016. The RGFO assisted in creating a Junior Explorer Activity booklet for the Gold Belt Byway. Funds were raised to print 2,000 copies that were distributed to the public. Over 10 presentations were given by RGFO staff, volunteers, and a General Service Administration student. Most presentations are geared toward elementary aged students. Presentations were given to a local elementary school for Science Friday, the Boys and Girls club, Science Night in Salida, CO, and a Colorado Natural Areas field Trip honoring volunteers. The RGFO participated in the Geological Society of America’s K-12 teacher field camp and is developing Earth Caches for Marsh Quarry and Cleveland Quarry. Troyer 2014 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT COOKING WITH ROCK: AN INVESTIGATION OF PREHISTORIC HEARTH MORPHOLOGY IN NORTHERN COLORADO Hearths are a focal point for the organization of prehistoric hunter-gatherer activities, and can reveal a wealth of information regarding subsistence, settlement, chronology, and technology. However, despite the direct association with human behavior and the breadth of information these features offer the archaeologist, hearth morphology and the distribution of different feature types through time and space has largely been ignored. With this in mind, this research will address three main questions: are there temporal and spatial patterns to hearth morphology; are there spatial and temporal patterns in the material recovered from hearth features; and do changes in hearth morphology through time coincide with documented changes in paleoclimate, and other systemic changes in prehistoric culture? This study is focused on Boulder, Grand, Jackson, Larimer, and Weld counties of northern Colorado, and utilizes 190 radiocarbon dated hearth features, representing 72 individual archaeological sites. The features used in this study range in age from Paleoindian to Protohistoric, and are distributed across plains, foothills, montane, and subalpine/alpine environments. Collectively, this research seeks to better understand specific adaptive changes in past human culture, their causes and correlations, and how these changes in prehistoric culture are manifest in the distribution and morphology of hearth features in northern Colorado. -

ABSTRACT All known North American nonmarine mollusks of Blancan (late Pliocene and early Pleistocene) age have been here fitted into the available framework of associated fossils, physical stratigraphy and radiogenic potassium-argon dates. Many of the independently dated molluscan assemblages are so similar to other faunas that most of the fossils summarized can be assigned confidently to the Blancan age. These assignments permitted compilation of lists of last appear- ances of genera and families that are unknown during or after Blancan times. About 50-55 Blancan assemblages are known, and together with about 10-15 older or younger faunas included for convenience of discussion they are summarized under 57 local geographic headings (map, Fig. 1). For each local assemblage the following data have been given so far as possi- ble: location, previous references to mollusks, stratigraphic unit and most recent geologic maps, number of species of mollusks, mention of other fossils from the same locality or formation, age, institution where fossils are preserved, and most recent topographic maps. The detail of treatment varies widely, according to available information, progress of knowledge since previous liter- ature and the usefulness of new information. Lists of species are included usually only if the fauna is revised or first recorded in this paper, but the references to previous work are intended to be complete. The Blancan faunas from the Great Plains region (Nebraska, Kansas, Okla- homa, Texas), and from Arizona, are generally similar and include mainly widespread living species. -

A QUANTITATIVE MIDGE-BASED RECONSTRUCTION OF THERMAL CONDITIONS IN CENTRAL COLORADO DURING MARINE ISOTOPE STAGE 5 by DANIELLE RENEE HASKETT (Under the Direction of David Porinchu) ABSTRACT Subfossil chironomid analysis was used to establish the efficacy of adding chironomid assemblages from Colorado to the Great Basin (GB) midge calibration set. The most robust inference model was developed using a 2-component weighted averaging-partial least squares and the calibration set was incorporated into the GB training set. It was used to develop a midge- based mean July air temperature (MJAT) inference model with a robust jack-knifed r2 (0.61) and root mean square error of prediction (0.97°C). This inference model was applied to a midge stratigraphy and enabled the development of a quantitative reconstruction of MJAT from ~70 – 140 ka for the Ziegler Reservoir fossil site near Snowmass Village, Colorado. Reconstructed temperatures ranged from 8.9 – 13.2°C. The transition from MIS 6 to MIS 5e was characterized by an increase in the MJAT of ~1.5°C (9.0-10.5°C). MIS 5 exhibited increasing midge-inferred MJAT, culminating in a MJAT of 13.2°C during MIS 5a.
