2020 Family Guide to DCPS High Schools MY SCHOOL DC LOTTERY

The My School DC lottery gives families the opportunity to apply for available seats in early childhood programs for 3- and 4-year-olds, out-of- boundary DCPS schools in grades K-12, citywide schools, DCPS application high schools, and participating charter schools. A single, random lottery is run by My School DC to determine placement of new students at all participating schools.The Office of the State Superintendent of Education oversees the My School DC lottery in collaboration with DCPS, the Public Charter School Board, and participating charter schools.

2020 Family Guide to DCPS High Schools 3 Destination school (also feeder pattern school): A middle, high, or education campus school that a student has a right to attend based on the student completing the terminal grade at an elementary or middle school during the previous school year.

In-boundary school (also neighborhood school or zoned school): A school that a student has the right to attend based on a student’s home address. To identify your student’s in-boundary school, visit enrolldcps.dc.gov/node/41

Out-of-boundary school: A school other than a student’s in-boundary or feeder pattern school.

Application high school and program: A DCPS high school or program that requires an application for entry into the school. There are two types of DCPS application high schools and programs.

Citywide: A school that does not have a designated boundary and therefore cannot be claimed as an in-boundary/zoned school. Citywide schools can only be accessed through the lottery and do not provide guaranteed enrollment to any student/family. Ron Brown is the only DCPS citywide application high school.

Selective: A DCPS high school or program that admits students based on specific eligibility criteria and requires application for entry into the school. All students eligible to enroll in grades 9-12 can apply, but only those who meet a selective high school’s or program’s requirements will be eligible to attend.

Why Bard High School Early College DC? Find Us Bard High School Early College DC (Bard DC) operates through a partnership between Bard 4430 H Street, SE College and DCPS. Students have the unique opportunity to earn 60 transferable college Washington, DC 20019 credits and an Associate in Arts degree from Bard College alongside a high school diploma, free of charge. It’s never too early to start preparing for college! All these resources are available to all DCPS high school students and families.

Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs & Career Academies: DCPS operates 50+ CTE programs within 20 different Career Education Pathways across 17 DCPS high schools. CTE Programs are rigorous and engaging, they prepare students for several postsecondary opportunities, and include: sequential career-themed courses, work-based learning opportunities, the opportunity to earn early college credits and industry-recognized certifications. In our efforts to enhance and support our CTE programming, DCPS currently operates 21 NAF Career Academies at 11 high schools throughout the city (10 of these Academies started this school year). Each academy is centered on one of several career themes: Engineering, Hospitality, Health Sciences, Transportation, Mass Media or Information Technology (IT), that are align closely with high-wage, high skill, and high-demand jobs in the District. Embedded within the Career Academy model is a strong student and teacher support structure, college and industry partnerships, career-focused internships, and rigorous curricula that culminate in industry recognized certifications. All Career Academies are supported by industry advisory boards (IABs), whose members include leaders from the fields of business and higher education.

SAT Test Prep: Almost all colleges require applicants to submit SAT/ACT scores. All DCPS SAT students will take the PSAT and SAT in school for FREE. Practice makes perfect! All DCPS students can take SAT Test Prep for free via the College Board’s Khan Academy. www.khanacademy.org/sat
