  • Introduction
PDF file from Evenhuis, N.L. & D.J. Greathead, 1999, World Catalog of Bee Flies (Diptera: Bombyliidae). Backhuys Publishers, Leiden. xlviii + ix 756 pp. INTRODUCTION Bombyliids, or bee flies as they are commonly called, comprise a diverse and speciose assemblage of brachycerous flies. With more than 4,500 species known worldwide, they are one of the largest families of Diptera, surpassed in numbers of species only by the Tipulidae (14,000), Tachinidae (9,200), Syrphidae (5,800), Asilidae (5,600), Ceratopogonidae (5,300), and Dolichopodidae (5,100). They occur in a variety of habitats and ecosystems (from ca. 10 km from the Arctic Ocean in Canada through all latitudes as far south as Tierra del Fuego; and at altitudes from over 3500 m in the Himalayas to 200 m below sea level at the shores of the Dead Sea). They are found on all continents except Antarctica and also many oceanic islands. The family has a remarkable range in size (from some Exoprosopa with wingspans of more than 60 mm to the tiny Apolysis that can be as small as 1.5 mm in length) and variety of shapes (e.g., Systropus mimicking ammophiline wasps; Bombomyia mimic- king bumblebees). The adults of the larger species are powerful and agile fliers, rivaling the syrphid flies in their ability to hover and move in all directions while in flight. With many species possessing colorful patterns of stripes and spots on the wings and bodies, bee flies are often some of the most striking in appearance of all the Diptera. Individuals can often be seen either resting in the open on trails or on rocks or twigs sunning themselves, or feeding on a variety of flowering plants.

  • F. Christian Thompson Neal L. Evenhuis and Curtis W. Sabrosky Bibliography of the Family-Group Names of Diptera
    F. Christian Thompson Neal L. Evenhuis and Curtis W. Sabrosky Bibliography of the Family-Group Names of Diptera Bibliography Thompson, F. C, Evenhuis, N. L. & Sabrosky, C. W. The following bibliography gives full references to 2,982 works cited in the catalog as well as additional ones cited within the bibliography. A concerted effort was made to examine as many of the cited references as possible in order to ensure accurate citation of authorship, date, title, and pagination. References are listed alphabetically by author and chronologically for multiple articles with the same authorship. In cases where more than one article was published by an author(s) in a particular year, a suffix letter follows the year (letters are listed alphabetically according to publication chronology). Authors' names: Names of authors are cited in the bibliography the same as they are in the text for proper association of literature citations with entries in the catalog. Because of the differing treatments of names, especially those containing articles such as "de," "del," "van," "Le," etc., these names are cross-indexed in the bibliography under the various ways in which they may be treated elsewhere. For Russian and other names in Cyrillic and other non-Latin character sets, we follow the spelling used by the authors themselves. Dates of publication: Dating of these works was obtained through various methods in order to obtain as accurate a date of publication as possible for purposes of priority in nomenclature. Dates found in the original works or by outside evidence are placed in brackets after the literature citation.

The endemic Australian bee fly genus Eristalopsis Evenhuis, 1985 (Bombyliidae: Bombyliinae) is reviewed including 11 new species: E. aurata sp.n., E. concava sp.n., E. danielsorum sp.n., E. flava sp.n., E. maculata sp.n., E. minor sp.n., E. parva sp.n., E. rubra sp.n., E. smarti sp.n., E. uniformis sp.n., E. wrightae sp.n. In addition, we generate a morphological phylogeny including all recognised species. This genus can easily be distinguished from other Australian genera in the subfamily Bombyliinae by having a 2-segmented antennal flagellum, cell br longer than cell bm, crossvein m-m in apical half of cell dm, crossvein r-m much longer than crossvein m-m, abdominal tergites with black and yellow pattern, and female genitalia without sand chamber.

FLY TIMES ISSUE 64, Spring, 2020 Stephen D. Gaimari, editor Plant Pest Diagnostics Branch California Department of Food & Agriculture 3294 Meadowview Road Sacramento, California 95832, USA Tel: (916) 738-6671 FAX: (916) 262-1190 Email: [email protected] Welcome to the latest issue of Fly Times! This issue is brought to you during the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of you likely cooped up at home, with insect collections worldwide closed for business! Perhaps for this reason this issue is pretty heavy, not just with articles but with images. There were many submissions to the Flies are Amazing! section and the Dipterists Lairs! I hope you enjoy them! Just to touch on an error I made in the Fall issue’s introduction… In outlining the change to “Spring” and “Fall” issues, instead of April and October issues, I said “But rest assured, I WILL NOT produce Fall issues after 20 December! Nor Spring issues after 20 March!” But of course I meant no Spring issues after 20 June! Instead of hitting the end of spring, I used the beginning. Oh well… Thank you to everyone for sending in such interesting articles! I encourage all of you to consider contributing articles that may be of interest to the Diptera community, or for larger manuscripts, the Fly Times Supplement series. Fly Times offers a great forum to report on research activities, to make specimen requests, to report interesting observations about flies or new and improved methods, to advertise opportunities for dipterists, to report on or announce meetings relevant to the community, etc., with all the digital images you wish to provide.

533 COLLECTION NOTES Much information on the depositories of entomological collectors and authors can be found in Horn et al. (1990) [for information up through the year 1960] and Gaedike (1995) [for information 1961–1994]. However, this information is by no means complete. It was decided by us to include brief biographical and collection information on selected authors and institutions below in order to supplement, correct, and synthesize that pro- vided elsewhere. A summary of the top twenty institutional and private collections (by number of types) housing bombyliid types is given in the table below. Table 1. Bigot Collection Jacques Marie Frangile Bigot (1818–1893) was a French dipterist of independent means who, over the years, acquired a large collection of Diptera from various sources many of which were described by Macquart. Bigot’s collection was purchased after his death by G.H. Verrall and now resides in two major parts: a Palaearctic collection of Diptera in UMO; and an exotic (i.e., non-European) Diptera collection divided between UMO and BMNH (all “exotic” Bombyliidae are in BMNH). A complete inventory of the Bigot collection made by Verrall at the time of purchase exists in UMO. Bigot described 85 species-group names of Bombyliidae, of which 49 (58%) are currently considered tax- onomically valid.

Redescriptions of eight species were made: E. nuda HuI!, 1971, E. amabi/is (Wulp, 1881), E. beckeri Lamas & Couri, 1998, E. bicincta (Wiedemann, 1830), E. caminaria (Wiedemann, 1830), E. knutsoni Hull , 1971 , E. lIIaracaju/a HuI!, 1971 and E. truw/ia HuI!, 1971, with illustrations oflhe types, male temlinalia and spermathecae. Two synonymies - E. bicillcta (Wiedemann, 1830), syn.: E. bicincta HuI!, 1971; and E. nuda HuI!, 1971, syn. : E. shallnoni HuI! , 1971 - are proposed. A key lo species are presented excepl lo E. goya= (Macquart, 1840) and E. aperta (Macquml, 1847), which were not included in this study, as no material was examined. KEY WORDS. Bombyliidae; Bombyliinae; Diptera; Euprepina; Taxonomy.

  • Fly Times Issue 60
FLY TIMES ISSUE 60, April, 2018 Stephen D. Gaimari, editor Plant Pest Diagnostics Branch California Department of Food & Agriculture 3294 Meadowview Road Sacramento, California 95832, USA Tel: (916) 738-6671 FAX: (916) 262-1190 Email: [email protected] Welcome to the latest issue of Fly Times! My 20th as Editor! Time flies! As usual, I thank everyone for sending in such interesting articles. I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Please let me encourage all of you to consider contributing articles that may be of interest to the Diptera community for the next issue. Fly Times offers a great forum to report on your research activities and to make requests for taxa being studied, as well as to report interesting observations about flies, to discuss new and improved methods, to advertise opportunities for dipterists, to report on or announce meetings relevant to the community, etc., with all the associated digital images you wish to provide. This is also a great place to report on your interesting (and hopefully fruitful) collecting activities! Really anything fly-related is considered. And of course, thanks very much to Chris Borkent for again assembling the list of Diptera citations since the last Fly Times! The electronic version of the Fly Times continues to be hosted on the North American Dipterists Society website at http://www.nadsdiptera.org/News/FlyTimes/Flyhome.htm. For this issue, I want to again thank all the contributors for sending me such great articles! Feel free to share your opinions or provide ideas on how to improve the newsletter.

  • Análise Cladística De Euprepina Hull (Diptera, Bombyliidae, Bombyliinae)
Análise cladística de Euprepina Hull (Diptera, Bombyliidae, Bombyliinae) Carlos José Einicker Lamas 1 Márcia Souto Couri 1, 2 ABSTRACT. Cladistic analysis of Ellprepina Hull, (Diptera, Bombyliidae, Bom byliinae). A cladistic analysis of Ellprepina Hull, 1971 (Diptera, Bombyliidae, Bom byliinae), a Neotropical genus that includes ten species, was made. The cladogramwas obtained from eight studied species, based on a data matrix with 21 characters, using lhe program Hennig86. Character states were pol ari zed following outgroup analysis, and an hypothetical ancestor was included in the analysis in order to roOI the tree. The options used, "ie*" and "xs w", resulted in fo ur most parsimonious trees with ci = 79, ri = 80 and length 115. The monophil elism of Euprepina was suppolted by two synapomorph ies. KEY WORDS. Diptera, Euprepina, Bombyliidae, Bombyliinae, cladistic analysis Euprepina !-Iull, 1971 , inclui dez espécies conhecidas.
