SUMMARY SPECIES: Atriplex gardneri This Species Review summarizes information on the fire effects and related ecology of Gardner's saltbush that was available in the scientific literature as of 2020. Gardner's saltbush is a member of a complex of taxa that are intermediate between herbaceous and shrub forms (i.e., half-shrubs). Taxa within the complex hybridize readily, confounding species identification and classification. There is disagreement among systematists as to placement of taxa sometimes classified as Gardner's saltbush. https://www.fs.fed.us/database/feis/plants/shrub/atrgar/all.html 1/25 Gardner's saltbush is distributed from southeastern British Columbia east to southwestern Manitoba and south to Colorado. It grows in semiarid and temperate climates and is drought and salt tolerant. It is common to dominant on sites with fine-textured, saline soils, especially clay flats and basins. Gardner's saltbush dominates or codominates many salt desert shrublands, and it is a component of some sagebrush and mixed-grass prairie communities. Gardner's saltbush reproduces after fire and other top-killing events primarily by sprouting from the root crown and roots. It also reproduces from seed, from persistent aerial and soil-stored seed banks. Its fruits may remain viable on the plant for 1 to 2 years. The seeds are dormant upon dispersal, with high levels of dormancy and complex, multiple mechanisms of dormancy. -

We have inserted EFED’s response after each APHIS comment that pertains to the comparative risk assessment (comment 6 relates to BEAD’s benefits assessment). Some of these issues were addressed in EFED’s response to registrants’ comments during the 30-day “errors-only” comment period in 2001 and comments submitted during the 120-day “public-comments” period from January to May of 2003. The present submission also includes a copy of APHIS’ comments from March 31, 2003, and they request that comments 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 be addressed. EFED addressed those comments in our July 17, 2004 “Response to Public Comments on EFED's Risk Assessment: "Potential Risks of Nine Rodenticides to Birds and Nontarget Mammals: a Comparative Approach", dated December 19, 2002", and we reiterate our response to those comments as well. We have also attached a table of many zinc phosphide use sites, methods of application, application rates and number of applications permitted, although many product labels do not provide that information. -

Box 1689 Laramie, Wyoming 82073 NOVEMBER 2008 Wyoming Pocket Gopher Surveys in south-central Wyoming 2008 INTRODUCTION The Wyoming pocket gopher (Thomomys clusius) is the only vertebrate wildlife species that occurs exclusively in Wyoming, apparently only in south-central Wyoming, specifically Sweetwater and Carbon counties (Clark and Stromberg 1987). It recently was petitioned for listing under the Endangered Species Act. One of the petitions rationales for the species’ listing is the potential negative effects of energy development taking place within their known range (Keinath et al. 2008). The species appears to occupy dry and gravelly ridges, as opposed to valley bottoms with deeper soils that typically are associated with other gopher species (Wilson and Reeder 1993). Current species knowledge is based predominantly on evidence (i.e. museum specimens, anecdotal reports) nearly 30 years old (Keinath and Beauvais 2006). Consequently, there is a paucity of up- to-date information on Wyoming pocket gopher abundance, morphology, habitat use, distribution, and potential threats to its persistence. The predicted distribution for Wyoming pocket gopher has been estimated using computer modeling techniques, but additional occurrence locations are needed to validate or improve models (Keinath and Beauvais 2006). Trapping efforts that provide spatial, genetic, and morphological data for Wyoming pocket gopher are needed to improve our understanding of the species’ ecology. In addition, this information may provide aid for the logistics and trapping success of future efforts.
