MoMA | press | Releases | 2001 | Good Marchine: Tenth Anniversary Page 1 of 4 For Immediate Release February 2001 THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART TO CELEBRATE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF GOOD MACHINE, NEW YORK-BASED PRODUCTION COMPANY Good Machine: Tenth Anniversary February 13-23, 2001 The Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1 Over the past ten years, Good Machine, a New York-based production company helmed by Ted Hope, David Linde and James Schamus, has become one of the major forces in independent film culture worldwide. Dedicated to the work of emerging, innovative filmmakers, Good Machine has produced or co-produced films by, among others, Ang Lee, Todd Solondz, Nicole Holofcener, Ed Burns, Cheryl Dunye and Hal Hartley. Beginning with Tui Shou (Pushing Hands) (1992), the first collaboration between Good Machine and director Ang Lee, The Museum of Modern Art presents eight feature films and five shorts from February 13 through 23, 2001 at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theatre 1. "Good Machine proves that audiences do want to be entertained intelligently and engaged substantively," remarks Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film and Video, who organized the series. "Their achievements are reflected in this Tenth Anniversary series and are, in large part, due to Good Machine's collaborations with filmmakers and its respect for the creative process." In addition to producing and co-producing films, Good Machine has gone on to establish an international sales company involved in distributing diverse and unusual works such as Joan Chen's Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl (1998) and Lars Von Trier's Dancer in the Dark (2000). -

Duluth, Georgia – Premier Golf is awarded “authorized tour operator” for 2019 Solheim Cup. Following competition for the award, Premier Golf triumphed and garnered a coveted designation from the Ladies European Tour. The Solheim Cup has blossomed in popularity following victories in 2015 and 2017 and Premier Golf expects to take hundreds of people to the 2019 matches at Gleneagles Resort in central Scotland. Three-time U.S.A. Captain Julie Inkster and her team will be seeking a Three-peat against the Europeans. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. The adoration of the Fowlers for their golden son is deeply touching, and ultimately the basic source of the film's emotional power. Frank's pursuit of the coy, attractive townie Natalie (Marisa Tomei), is dismissed by his indulgent father as a summer fling. -

2011Traditions of Golf Challenge Study Guide HISTORY SECTION PRE - 20th Century “When did the game of golf start?” Golf originated in the 15th century in Scotland. Mary, Queen of Scots introduced the word “caddie” to the game. While playing golf, she was accompanied by a club-carrying young boy whom she called the “cadet”, or “caddie.” Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. “How were golf balls developed?” The first real golf ball was known as the “feathery”. The feathery was a leather sack filled by hand with boiled goose feathers, and stitched up and painted. The feathery golf ball period may have started as early as the 1400’s and ended in the early 1850’s. The arrival of the gutta percha ball in 1848 or “guttie”, as it was called, revolutionized the game and allowed golf’s spread to the masses. The guttie was made from rubber, which could be heated, and formulated into a ball. The next revolution in ball design came around 1905 with the patented "Haskell" ball, which is a composite of a solid core wound with thin strips of rubber. Some modern balls (the expensive ones) are made this way today. This ball performed much better than the gutty and could be made cheaply compared to earlier balls. In 1972 the first two-piece ball was introduced by Spalding. These are more popular with amateurs, as they are more durable and considered to be longer and straighter. Many professionals are still devoted to the softer covered balls, since they prefer the added spin for control as opposed to distance. -
