Solomon upon being named to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Business and Industry Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should salute those citizens who through their extraordinary efforts have distinguished themselves both in their chosen professions and as community leaders of whom we can all be proud; and WHEREAS, one such noteworthy person is David L. Solomon, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and Director of NuVox Communications, who makes his home in Nashville, Tennessee; and WHEREAS, David Solomon embarked upon a career as an accountant when his father, Frazier Solomon, former Director of State Audit and Personnel Director of the Office of the Comptroller of the Treasury of the State of Tennessee, read bedtime stories to him from an accounting manual from the age of four; David grew up to be the husband of a CPA and the son-in-law of a CPA; and WHEREAS, Mr. Solomon earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from David Lipscomb University in Nashville in 1981 and went to work for the public accounting firm of HJR0732 01251056 -1- KPMG Peat Marwick; during his thirteen years at KPMG Peat Marwick, he rose to the rank of partner, gaining experience in public and private capital markets, financial management and reporting; and WHEREAS, David Solomon left in 1994 to join Brooks Fiber Properties (BFP) as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, as well as Chief Financial Officer, Secretary and Director of Brooks Telecommunications Corporation until it was acquired by BFP in January 1996; while at BFP, he was involved in all aspects of strategic development, raised over $1.6 billion in equity and debt, and built or acquired systems in 44 markets; and WHEREAS, since 1998, when BFP was sold to MCI WorldCom in a $3.4 billion transaction, Mr. -

SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSONS Commentary by Michael Sigler December 6, 2009 The Lineage of David Ruth 4:13-17 & Matthew 1:1-6 Key verse: “The women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, ‘A son has been born to Naomi.’ They named him Obed; he became the father of Jesse, the father of David” (Ruth 4:17). What parts of the Bible do you skip over? Most people rarely read the genealogies—“so-and-so begat so-and-so who begat so-and-so.” Granted, these passages might not offer the most exciting reading. But with just a little study, the genealogies of the Bible offer great spiritual treasures! This week’s lesson dips into the genealogy of Christ as presented in Matthew’s Gospel. The lesson also looks back to two ancient women of faith whose lives play an integral part in God’s great plan for humanity—Naomi and Ruth. Their story as told in the Book of Ruth is one of the most beautiful stories in the Bible. The story focuses on Naomi first, a Hebrew woman whose family has lost everything because of a famine. Trying to find a way to survive, Naomi, her husband and their two sons move to the nearby country of Moab. There the two sons find wives. But before long, bad times are back. Naomi’s husband and both of her sons die, leaving her with few prospects for support. Hearing that the famine in Judah has ended, Naomi decides to go home. The second part of the story focuses on Naomi’s daughter-in-law, Ruth. -

The KJV translates Strong's H1792 in the following manner: break (3x), break in pieces (3x), crush (3x), bruise (2x), destroy (2x), contrite (1x), smite (1x), oppress (1x), beat to pieces (1x), humble (1x). ● The word translated as contrite in the Bible has three Hebrew words that essentially mean the same thing. First is the root word above. Below are the other two. ,dakkâʼ, dak-kaw'; from H1792; crushed (literally powder, or figuratively ַדָּכּא ● contrite):—contrite, destruction. The KJV translates Strong's H1793 in the following manner: contrite (2x), destruction (1x). dâkâh, daw-kaw'; a primitive root (compare H1790, H1792); to collapse (phys. or ָדָּכה ● mentally):—break (sore), contrite, crouch. -

After the miracle in 1 Samuel 26, David was overcome with despair and left the territory of Israel (27:1). He lost hold of the clear, prophetic insight that he had about the Lord removing Saul (26:10). In this season of his life, David embraced compromise based in fear, though he had been delivered 12 times before this (18:11, 27; 19:6, 18; 20:1; 22:1; 23:12-14; 23:28; 24:11; 25:33; 26:12). 1And David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines [Gath and Ziklag].” (1 Sam. 27:1) 9David said to Abishai, “…for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’s anointed, and be guiltless? 10…the LORD shall strike him…he shall go out to battle and perish.” (1 Sam. 26:9-10) B. There were times when his circumstances contradicted God’s promises over his life that everything seemed lost to David. The Lord was testing his faith and calling him to realign his thinking and refine his character. He learned lessons in these times that he would not have learned otherwise. C. Our battle is a fight for faith or for believing God’s Word in the face of our fears. To trust God in times of blessing and victory is one thing, but to trust Him when things look negative is another. -

II Samuel 16:5-14 Dealin' with Dead Dogs Licking Valley Church of Christ January 31, 2021 Thank you so much for the opportunity to share with you this morning from the Word of God. I count it a privilege to know and minister alongside your minister, Gus. Gus and I started out in Bible college together back in 1975. He and his roommate, Jay lived on the 2nd floor right above Kevin Mack and me. We would communicate with each other - either by them stomping on the floor or us banging on the ceiling. That would signify that it was time to open our windows and to look up or down while conversing. I don't care to remember all of the gory details, but there was a time when I believe I indicated that I wanted to visit them up in their room. "Come on up!" They invited. Like a dummy, I reached up my hands through our window stretching up toward theirs. They actually agreed to my non-verbal request by pulling me up to their 2nd story dorm room and I ascended without the use of steps! Our relationship has toned down considerably over the years. I appreciate so much Gus's love for the Lord and His people. His ministry here has been an encouragement, not only to the folks of this congregation, but to so many others of us. I also appreciate your theme for the beginning of this year: Goliath Must Fall - Winning the Battle Against Your Giants. I've listened to a couple of sermons from the series and also watched this week's Louie Giglio episode that some of your small groups are using. -

Where were the Prophets David had? • To warn Solomon of his descent into paganism. • To warn Solomon of how he was breaking the heart of the Lord. o Do you have friends that care enough about you to tell you when you are backsliding against the Lord? o No one in the Electronic church to challenge you, to pray for you, to care for you. All of these pagan women he married (for political reasons?) were of no benefit. • Nations surrounding Israel still hated Solomon • Atheism, Agnostics, Gnostics, Paganism, and Legalisms are never satisfied until you are dead – and then it turns to kill your children and grandchildren. Neo-Assyrian Palaces and the Creation of Courtly Culture
Journal of Ancient History 2019; 7(1): 1–31 Melanie Groß* and David Kertai Becoming Empire: Neo-Assyrian palaces and the creation of courtly culture https://doi.org/10.1515/jah-2018-0026 Abstract: Assyria (911–612 BCE) can be described as the founder of the imperial model of kingship in the ancient Near East. The Assyrian court itself, however, remains poorly understood. Scholarship has treated the court as a disembodied, textual entity, separated from the physical spaces it occupied – namely, the pa- laces. At the same time, architectural analyses have examined the physical struc- tures of the Assyrian palaces, without consideration for how these structures were connected to people’s lives and works. The palaces are often described as se- cluded, inaccessible locations. This study presents the first model of the Assyrian court contextualized in its actual palaces. It provides a nuanced model highlight- ing how the court organized the immense flow of information, people and goods entering the palace as a result of the empire’s increased size and complexity. It argues that access to the king was regulated by three gates of control which were manned by specific types of personnel and a more situational organization that moved within the physical spaces of the palace and was contingent on the king’s activity. Abstract In this thesis I shall look at the narratives of three women in 1 and 2 Samuel: Michal, Bathsheba and Tamar. I will argue how these women each endure incredible experiences of suffering that are brought about primarily through the actions of both King David and the narrator. These women suffer at the hands of the narrator due to the narratives neglect in recording their experiences in any detail in the text. Instead, it will be my argument that these women are simply used as a means of continuing and explaining the events that happen in the plot of 1 and 2 Samuel and the ‘David story’. It will be my aim then to attempt to bring these women’s experiences to the forefront of the text and uncover their lost voices.
