Nargolwalla Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2009 Abstract The origin and diversification of great apes and humans is among the most researched and debated series of events in the evolutionary history of the Primates. A fundamental part of understanding these events involves reconstructing paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic patterns in the Eurasian Miocene; a time period and geographic expanse rich in evidence of lineage origins and dispersals of numerous mammalian lineages, including apes. Traditionally, the geographic origin of the African ape and human lineage is considered to have occurred in Africa, however, an alternative hypothesis favouring a Eurasian origin has been proposed. This hypothesis suggests that that after an initial dispersal from Africa to Eurasia at ~17Ma and subsequent radiation from Spain to China, fossil apes disperse back to Africa at least once and found the African ape and human lineage in the late Miocene. The purpose of this study is to test the Eurasian origin hypothesis through the analysis of spatial and temporal patterns of distribution, in situ evolution, interprovincial and intercontinental dispersals of Eurasian terrestrial mammals in response to environmental factors. Using the NOW and Paleobiology databases, together with data collected through survey and excavation of middle and late Miocene vertebrate localities in Hungary and Romania, taphonomic bias and sampling completeness of Eurasian faunas are assessed. -

Tobien inserted a "Csarnotian" between the Ruscinian and the Early Villafranchian, but it is doubtful that this stage is really distinct from the Ruscinian, although the latter may be subdivided into smaller faunal zones. -

Interpretations of paleoenvironments at the Pliocene locality of Laetoli in northern Tanzania have figured prominently in these discussions, primarily because early hominins recovered from Laetoli are generally inferred to be associated with grassland, savanna or open woodland habitats. As these reconstructions effectively extend the range of habitat preferences inferred for Pliocene hominins, and contrast with interpretations of predominantly woodland and forested ecosystems at other early hominin sites, it is worth reevaluating the paleoecology at Laetoli utilizing a new approach. Isotopic analyses were conducted on the teeth of twenty-one extinct mammalian herbivore species from the Laetolil Beds (∼4.3–3.5 Ma) and Upper Ndolanya Beds (∼2.7–2.6 Ma) to determine their diet, as well as to investigate aspects of plant physiognomy and climate. Enamel samples were obtained from multiple localities at different stratigraphic levels in order to develop a high-resolution spatio-temporal framework for identifying and characterizing dietary and ecological change and variability within the succession. -

Previous paleoecology. environmental reconstructions of hominid localities have concentrated on taxonomic identities and taxonomic uniformitarianism to provide habitat reconstructions (e.g., Vrba, 1975; Shipman & Harris, 1988). In addition, relative abundances of species are often used to reconstruct a particular environment, when in fact taphonomic factors could be affecting the propor- tions of taxa. This study uses the morphological adaptations of mammalian assemblages found with early hominids to reconstruct the habitat based on each species’ ecological adaptations, thus minimizing problems introduced by taxonomy and taphonomy. -
To Changing Environments in the Plio-Pleistocene: Tooth Wear, Diets and Habitats
2019 Pigs, hogs or boars (suids) were not the subjects I thought to research during my PhD before AND OFGEOSCIENCES GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT I started, but I definitely fell in love with them during the journey. The same applies for Africa, though I have had the dream of working with something related to the wildlife of Africa since my childhood. In the end I was able to combine them with the second secret dream, being a palaeontologist in Finland. In this thesis I have investigated the peculiar case of the Plio-Pleistocene African suids, which show shifting from omnivorous diet to grazing in three different lineages. I have conducted experimental work on dental wear by different food items with a mechanical masticator. My work also provides insights for abundances of the Turkana Basin suids in relation to climate changes in the Plio-Pleistocene and identifying a relationship between dental topography and diet preferences in present-day suids and applying the results for the extinct suids. Da die Bearbeitung dieser Reste einen ein- gehenden Vergleich mit rezenten und fossilen Schweinen notwendig m^achte und über- dies eine moderne, zusammenfassende Studie über die Evolution der fossilen und rezen- ten Suiden fehlt, schien eine solche wünschenswert. Ein derartiger Versuch war auch schon dadurch gerechtfertigt, als die eingehenden Vergleichsuntersuchungen an fossilem Material zu der Erkenntnis führten, daß innerhalb verschiedener Stammlinien unab- hängig voneinander ähnliche „trends" und damit mehrfach Parallelerscheinungen auf- treten. ^ Gleichzeitig wurde auch der Versuch gemacht, die Evolution der Suiden von ver- schiedenen Gesichtspunkten (z. B. morphologisch-historisch, funktionell-anatomisch und ethologisch) aus zu betrachten und damit schließlich die tatsächlichen phylogenetischen Zusammenhänge aufzuzeigen. -

ABSTRACT - Nine specimens of fossil pigs are described here from the latest Miocene mammal assemblage of Monticino Gypsum Quarry (also referred to as Brisighella). The tooth remains consist of three elements of the upper dentition (I1, M3 and M2), and two of the lower dentition (P2 and M1). There are four post-cranial elements (astragalus, cuboid, navicular and third phalanx). The degree of dental wear, the closure of the root of the incisor, as well as the relative dimensions of the post-cranial remains indicate that the fossils belong to at least two individuals, a juvenile and an adult. The specimens have been assigned to the species Propotamochoerus provincialis (Gervais, 1859) based on a combinaton of dental morphometrics and morphological characters. Affinities may be shown with recent forms ofSus scrofa Linnaeus, 1758, based on aspects of the morphology of the post-cranial remains implying that the latter are quite homogenous within primitive or derived taxa of the family. As the post-cranial morphology of Propotamochoerus is poorly known the description given here of the findings at Brisighella is an important addition to the knowledge regarding the genus. -

Synopsis of the terrestrial vertebrate faunas from the Middle Kura Basin (Eastern Georgia and Western Azerbaijan, South Caucasus). Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 63 (3): 441–461. This paper summarizes knowledge on the Neogene–Quaternary terrestrial fossil record from the Middle Kura Basin accumulated over a century and aims to its integration into the current research. This fossil evidence is essential in understanding the evolution of the Eurasian biome, since this territory is located at the border of Eastern Mediterranean and Central Asian regions. The general biostratigraphic framework suggests existence of two major intervals of the terrestrial fossil record in the area, spanning ca. 10–7 Ma and ca. 3–1 Ma, and points to an important hiatus between the late Miocene and late Pliocene. General aspects of the paleogeographic history and fossil record suggest that the biogeographic role of the Middle Kura Basin has been changing over geological time from a refugium (Khersonian) to a full-fledged part of the Greco-Iranian province (Meotian–Pontian). The dynamic environmental changes during the Quaternary do not depict this territory as a refugium in its general sense. The greatest value of this fossil record is the potential to understand a detailed history of terrestrial life during demise of late Miocene Hominoidea in Eurasia and early Homo dispersal out of Africa. Late Miocene record of the Middle Kura Basin captures the latest stage of the Eastern Paratethys regression, and among other fossils counts the latest and the easternmost occurence of dryopithecine, Udabnopithecus garedziensis, while the almost uninterrupted fossil record of the late Pliocene–Early Pleistocene covers the time interval of the early human occupation of Caucasus and Eurasia. -

Es ist der erste Schädelrest dieser Art, die damit erstmalig sicher aus dem österreichischen Tertiär nachgewiesen ist. Ein Vergleich mit fossilen und rezenten Suiden zeigt die generische Sonderstellung von Microstonyx. Sie wird als Endform der Hyotheriinen und nicht als Angehörige der Suinae ge- deutet und vom miozänen Hyotherium abgeleitet. Die Gattungs- und Art- Diagnose wird neu definiert. Microstonyx antiquus ist als Mitglied der Hipparionenfaunen vom Eppels- heim-Typ eine Waldform, M. major dagegen ein Savannenbewohner und Ange- höriger von Pikermi-Faunen. -

It contains only two species, Nyanzachoerus kanamensis Accepted 4 May 2017 and Notochoerus jaegeri. The size and morphology of their premolars overlap, but not those of their m3s. Available online 21 October 2017 No transitional form between them is known in Kenya, but some populations from Uganda and Ethiopia display intermediate characters, suggesting that No. jaegeri could be descended from a kanamensis-like Keywords: ancestor. However, the cranial remains of No. jaegeri from Kanapoi are insufficient to formally establish Africa the affinities of the species. On the basis of the dentition, Notochoerus euilus could be descended from No. Kenya Pliocene jaegeri. The noticeable absence of Kolpochoerus at Kanapoi (and in the whole Turkana Basin at that time) fi Kanapoi remains unexplained. The presence of a species with af nity to Nyanzachoerus tulotos at Ekora raises the Suidae possibility that uppermost Miocene sediments occur there. -
