Regular UniLink buses outside the National Oceanography Centre 2. Good infrastructure around the port and Red Funnel Ferries. Group 2 1. Southampton Central train station as a key access point for people to enter the city centre, but slightly spoiled by Hazard 1 listed below. 2. Parks provide a good space for cycling away from busy roads 3. Good bus links useful for Mayflower Theatre customers Hazards Group 1 1. In front of the Civic Centre and outside Old Mutual Wealth Unnerving place to cross, worst place in Southampton, no signals for pedestrians 2. Western Esplanade / Central Station Bridge junction No cycle paths 3. Entrance to Dock Gate 4 there are no signals 4. No safe place for cyclists to join and cross the Itchen Britch at the roundabout (Woolston) 5. Crossing point outside the Mayflower Gym Green man to indicate crossing is behind you 6. Civic Centre Road outside STA Travel No pelican crossing sounds 7. Central Road and bottom end of the Avenue Joint walking and cycle paths but no markings 8. Bernard Street No pedestrian crossing 9. West Quay Road – Southern Road junction Directional signal to Red Funnel is Poor 10. European Way outside the National Oceanography Centre UniLink buses often enter the dock site dangerously 11. No Cycle paths on Shirley High Street Group 2 1. Crossing between BBC and Civic Centre. Dangerous crossing and traffic lights have too long of a wait before you can cross. 2. Bedford place near Sainsbury’s Local Lack of crossing at increasingly busy road and junction 3. South Front Needs a zebra crossing as it is a dangerous road to cross 4. The Cenotaph Block paving is worn out, (also on London Road), very rough for cyclists and buses 5. West Park Parking Multi-storey car park very busy during evening shows at the Mayflower Theatre 6. Outside West Park Parking and Mayflower Halls Coach parks very busy, becoming issue, particularly during matinee performances for the elderly and school kids at the Mayflower Suggested Improvements 1. Town Quay before the roundabout opposite Grand Harbour near Red Funnel Ferries Direct bus route from Red Funnel along West Quay Road to train station 2. Platform Road Coordinate Traffic lights to ease congestion 3. Road that cuts through Guildhall Square Very unclear markings for pedestrians, maybe as clear markings or stop vehicle traffic 4. Junction after Central Bridge heading onto A3025 over the Itchen Bridge Make clearer the flow of traffic onto the Itchen Bridge, signals appear to favour traffic travelling southbound on the B3038 before going onto the bridge. 5. Onslow Road Suggested a dedicated cycle path as the road becomes very busy during rush hour with little room for cyclists. 6. Mount Pleasant Road level crossing Place “No Idling” signs around the level crossing 7. Shirley High Street Add cycle lane, very tight and dangerous with many cyclists and busses 8. Ogle Road Add an electric charging point for the new tourist vehicle (Rebecca – Go Southampton) 9. Direct UniLink shuttle bus between NOC and Highfield at peak times 10. Better transport sevices at later times around Mayflower Theatre (many people drive to Mayflower theatre as there are no transport services once the shows finish) 11. Above Bar Street, crossing between KFC and Sprinkles Gelato Zebra crossing would make more sense than lights as there is limited traffic Note: If following the meeting you have thought of any other Hazards, Suggested Improvements or examples of Good Infrastructure you would like to include, please email me so that they can be added into the final findings report. .

2020 Book News Welcome to our 2020 Book News. It’s hard to believe another year has gone by already and what a challenging year it’s been on many fronts. We finally got the Hallmark book launched at Showbus. The Red & White volume is now out on final proof and we hope to have copies available in time for Santa to drop under your tree this Christmas. Sorry this has taken so long but there have been many hurdles to overcome and it’s been a much bigger project than we had anticipated. Several other long term projects that have been stuck behind Red & White are now close to release and you’ll see details of these on the next couple of pages. Whilst mentioning bigger projects and hurdles to overcome, thank you to everyone who has supported my latest charity fund raiser in aid of the Christie Hospital. The Walk for Life challenge saw me trekking across Greater Manchester to 11 cricket grounds, covering over 160 miles in all weathers, and has so far raised almost £6,000 for the Christie. You can read more about this by clicking on the Christie logo on the website or visiting my Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mark-senior-sue-at-60 Please note our new FREEPOST address is shown below, it’s just: FREEPOST MDS BOOK SALES You don’t need to add anything else, there’s no need for a street name or post code. In fact, if you do add something, it will delay the letter or could even mean we don’t get it.

  • Isle of Wight Roads Are Different
The Isle of Wight Beer and Buses Weekend By Matt Sprack From the grubby sands of Shanklin if ever you should stray From Yarmouth down to Ventnor, from Ryde to Totland Bay From Bembridge to The Needles, from Yaverland to Brook You'll find a Southern Vectis bus wherever you may look - if you're lucky... - 'The Southern Vectis Bus Song' by Lauri Say Since 2014, the annual Isle of Wight Beer and Buses Weekend has been held every October. Organised by the Isle of Wight branch of CAMRA (the CAMpaign for Real Ale) and the Isle of Wight Bus Museum, for these two days the whole of the Isle of Wight is effectively transformed into a giant pub crawl. Only instead of having to walk, a fleet of classic 20th Century buses transport you from pub to pub for free along numerous different bus routes stretching across the Isle of Wight. All you are asked to do is purchase a programme (£7 in 2018), the proceeds of which go towards the upkeep of the Isle of Wight Bus Museum and its exhibits. In 2018 the event attracted over 12,000 participants. On the Omnibus Over 100 buses take part in the event per year, transporting people to almost 100 participating pubs across the Island. Dating from the 1930s onwards, most of the buses are privately owned and brought down at the owners' expense, some from considerable distance on the Mainland1, to what is becoming one of the largest preserved bus events in the UK. Part of the joy of the event is seeing the buses from all across the country, proudly displaying the liveries and logos of bus companies that would never normally be seen on the Island.
