Salvaging Exile Why did Christ heal the sick and suffering if he didn’t consider such external conditions important? Why is the kingdom of God equated with the deaf hear, the blind see? . And where do we get the incredible presumption to spiritualize these things that Christ saw and did very concretely? We must end this audacious, sanctimonious spiritualization of the gospel. Take it as it is, or hate it honestly! –Dietrich Bonhoeffer1 Exile, as we often hear it in the church, refers to a “spiritual” experience, our sense of being “strangers in a strange land” but not strangers in a strange actually land. In this book, I argue the theological language of exile is inescapably bound up with the fleshy language of being an exile. Theologically, exile is flesh it and is spirit. Exile, indeed, may signify a disruptive paradigm shift, or a felt anxiety, or the modern sense of “homelessness,” the idea that, as George Steiner puts it, we are “monads haunted by communion.”2 While not denying the power of those understandings, when exile comes to signify such broad and diffuse notions of experience, it can happen that we lose sight of the actual exile. Exile may refer to more than the exile of the body, but we must always remember that it will never be less than the exile of the body: the body deported, the body put into shackles, the body bruised, the body profiled, the body tortured, the body crucified. This book takes the body, the flesh experience of exile, seriously, which is to say, this book takes it theologically.

  • Scenes from the Old Testament Daniel in Babylon 24 January 2016 Christopher Rowland
Scenes from the Old Testament Daniel in Babylon 24 January 2016 Christopher Rowland Daniel 1: 1–20 1 Corinthians 1: 20 – 2: 5 Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–69), Belshazzar’s Feast (c. 1638), National Gallery, London1 Throughout its history the Book of Daniel has been a happy hunting ground for those who would construct a map of the future of the world, but it is less these visions about the finitude of world empires and more the narrative context, which is my particular concern this evening. The stories tell of educated young men suddenly being transported from life in their home city, Jerusalem, to the strange, opulent, world of the court of the king of Babylon, and finding themselves at odds with the surrounding culture. Throughout the Bible, from the stories of the Exile to Babylon through to the dramatic vision of Babylon seated on the many-headed beast in the Book of Revelation, Babylon has represented being confronted by another set of values, cultural and political dislocation, and the necessity of negotiating a way of existing in that situation. It is the kind of disorientation with which a subaltern people has to learn to come to terms, as they find a way of coping and surviving, assuming, that is, that they do not accommodate themselves completely to their oppressors’ culture. Life in ‘Babylon’ was not easy. It is evoked in the opening verses of Psalm 137, an experience with which many have resonated down the ages: By the rivers of Babylon there we sat down and there we wept when we remembered Zion.

« PSYOP : An Anthology » (2011) ‘Without the loudspeaker, we would never have conquered Germany’. Adolph Hitler, «Manual of German Radio», 1938 Nazareth, Hair of the Dog (1975) Operation Nifty Package was the name of the 1989 US Navy SEALS plan to capture Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega who had taken refuge in the Vatican Embassy. The mission employed a range of psychological weapons. Unexpectedly, the building was surrounded by a bowl of loudspeakers blasting music in order to persuade Noriega to leave. The tracks were mainly chosen for their messages and the selection ranged from soul and r’n’b classics to a line up of high-pitched hard rock tracks. This choice seemed efficient in upsetting the fugitive and the ecclesiastical jurisdiction. On January 3 1990, after ten days, Noriega finally surrendered himself. David Koresh, The Lonely Man (unknown) The FBI famously blasted music at the Branch Davidians in Waco in 1993. Apparently, the cult leader David Koresh, himself a failed pop singer, began the high-decibel musical exchange by overwhelming the troops with his own recordings. Nancy Sinatra, These Boots Are Made for Walking (1966) When the FBI moved in and cut the power to the Waco compound, they retaliated with the fitting lyrics of Nancy Sinatra’s ballad. The rest of the selection was made up of a monotonous mix of Tibetan chants, cavalry bugle beats and 1950s-style Christmas carols and continued nonstop for nearly seven weeks. Other tactics included using loudspeakers to play sounds of animals being slaughtered, drilling noises and clips from talk shows about how much their leader, Koresh, was hated.

Final release – 31.10.14 Scientists dispel the myth of the ‘X-Factor’ in favour of the ‘Hooked Factor’ – Music that stands the test of time • The Spice Girls and Lou Bega responsible for the nation’s catchiest songs • It takes Brit’s five seconds on average to recognise the UK’s biggest selling records • Double platinum selling record – Shakira’s ‘Hips don’t lie’ is one of the least recognisable songs, despite spending four weeks at number 1 in the UK A man with an excessively high waistband, three months on one of the nation’s biggest TV shows, and a public vote are usually thought to be the formula behind creating a hit. But scientists from the Museum of Science & Industry have spent the last year immersed in data provided by over 12,000 people in the Citizen Science experiment, delving into what really makes a catchy tune that stays with us – dispelling the ‘X-Factor’ in place of the ‘Hooked Factor’. The research conducted as part of the Museum’s #HookedOnMusic online experiment and the 2014 Manchester Science Festival, reveals the most memorable songs, pinpointing the time it takes to recognise them, and identifying the most recognisable fragment or hook within the hit. The #HookedOnMusic concept was originally designed by computational musicologist, Dr John Ashley Burgoyne and colleagues at University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University. The Museum's web based version of the experiment was designed to be engaging, accessible and fun, built by The Reading Room in close collaboration with MOSI, Dr John Ashley Burgoyne and Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellow, Dr Erinma Ochu, a citizen science expert based at The University of Manchester.
