“I stopped setting myself up to fail by making New Year’s resolutions years ago”, said a friend when I met up with her for the first time this year. “But, after spending Christmas with grandchildren I’ve realised that I must seem old, ignorant and boring to them as I hadn’t heard of many of the things they were talking about. They seem to be living in a totally different world. I’m determined that I’m going to learn more about my grandchildren’s world - starting with Instagram and ”. I NEED FACEBOOK,TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, TIKTOK, SNAPCHAT, TUMBIR, WHATSAPP, I don’t have grandchildren and my children aren’t big social media users, however AND YOUTUBE?? my nephews and nieces are avid Facebook users. And, have you noticed that more and more businesses are wanting you to go to their Facebook page? This year I’m going to learn how to use Facebook so I can learn more about the world of my nieces and nephews and engage fully with the business world.

How much do you know about the online world of your children and grandchildren. Can you join them there? When was the last time you learnt how to use another application? Join my friend and learn something different this year so that you can use a number of ways to connect with others in our continually changing world.

Tech Tip • WRITING ENTIRELY IN BLOCK CAPITALS: In email etiquette, online chats and/or forum posts, writing in capitals is the online equivalent of shouting. It's rude, so best not to do it unless you really do want to shout at someone.

: Young people generally use minimal punctuation - although ques- tion and exclamation marks are exceptions. To older social media users, using a peri- od is the natural way to end a sentence. But to younger people a period can reinforce a negative connotation, particularly with short sentences that stand alone. On the oth- er hand, an exclamation mark sends a positive message. So use Sounds good! rather than Sounds good.

SMS Textspeak, or texting language is the abbreviated language and commonly used with and internet-based communication such as email, and social media. Younger people in particular use these so become familiar with at least some of the more popular ones when using social media.
