Egypt after the Pharaohs: Ethnic Identity in Graeco-Roman Egypt Instructor: Rachel Mairs [email protected] 401-863-2306 Office hours: Rhode Island Hall 202. Tues 2-3pm, Thurs 11am-12pm, or by appointment. Course Description Egypt under Greek and Roman rule (from c. 332 BC) was a diverse place, its population including Egyptians, Greeks, Jews, Romans, Nubians, Arabs, and even Indians. This course will explore the sometimes controversial subject of ethnic identity and its manifestations in the material and textual record from Graeco-Roman Egypt, through a series of case studies involving individual people and communities. Topics will include multilingualism, ethnic conflict and discrimination, legal systems, and gender, using evidence from contemporary texts on papyrus as well as recent archaeological excavations and field survey projects. Course Objectives By the end of the course, participants should understand and be able to articulate: • how Graeco-Roman Egypt functioned as a diverse multiethnic, multilingual society. • the legal and political frameworks within which this diversity was organised and negotiated. • how research in the social sciences on multilingualism and ethnic identity can be utilised to provide productive and interesting approaches to the textual and archaeological evidence from Graeco-Roman Egypt. Students will also gain a broad overview of Egypt’s history from its conquest by Alexander the Great, through its rule by the Ptolemies, to the defeat of Cleopatra and Mark Antony and its integration into the Roman Empire, to the rise of Christianity. Paper Abstracts of the First International Coptic Studies Conference Life in Egypt during the Coptic Period From Coptic to Arabic in the Christian Literature of Egypt Adel Y. Sidarus Evora, Portugal After having made the point on multilingualism in Egypt under Graeco- Roman domination (2008/2009), I intend to investigate the situation in the early centuries of Arab Islamic rule (7th–10th centuries). I will look for the shift from Coptic to Arabic in the Christian literature: the last period of literary expression in Coptic, with the decline of Sahidic and the rise of Bohairic, and the beginning of the new Arabic stage. I will try in particular to discover the reasons for the tardiness in the emergence of Copto-Arabic literature in comparison with Graeco-Arabic or Syro-Arabic, not without examining the literary output of the Melkite community of Egypt and of the other minority groups represented by the Jews, but also of Islamic literature in general. Was There a Coptic Community in Greece? Reading in the Text of Evliya Çelebi Ahmed M. M. Amin Fayoum University Evliya Çelebi (1611–1682) is a well-known Turkish traveler who was visiting Greece during 1667–71 and described the Greek cities in his interesting work "Seyahatname". Çelebi mentioned that there was an Egyptian community called "Pharaohs" in the city of Komotini; located in northern Greece, and they spoke their own language; the "Coptic dialect". Çelebi wrote around five pages about this subject and mentioned many incredible stories relating the Prophets Moses, Youssef and Mohamed with Egypt, and other stories about Coptic traditions, ethics and language as well. -

THE GRAIN ECONOMY OF MAMLUK EGYPT BY IRA M. LAPIDUS (University of California, Berkeley) Scholarly studies of the economy of Egypt in the Middle Ages, from the Fatimid through the Mamluk periods, have stressed two seemingly contradictory themes. On the one hand, the extraordinary involvement of the state in economic affairs is manifest. At different times, and in various ways, the ruling regimes of Egypt monopolized or strictly controlled certain primary or strategic products. Wood and metals, both domestic and imported, were strictly controlled to assure the availability of military supplies. Certain export products like natron were sometimes made state monopolies. So too products of unusual commercial importance were exploited, especially by the Mamluk Sultans, to gain monetary advantages. Sugar production, often in the hands of rulers and oflicials, was also, on occasion, a state monopoly. At another level, the state participated in economic activity it did not monopolize. Either the governing bureaus themselves, or elite members of the regime, were responsible for irrigation and other investments essential to agricultural productivity. In the trading sphere, though state-sponsored trading expeditions are unknown, state support for trade by treaty arrangements, by military and diplomatic protection, and direct participation in the form of investments placed with mer- chants were characteristic activities. How much of the capital of trade was "booty" or political capital we shall never know. In other spheres, state participation gave way to state controls for the purposes of taxation. Regulation of the movements of merchants, or the distribution of goods, facilitated taxation. For religious or moral reasons state controls also extended to the supervision, regulation, or prohibition of certain illicit trades. -

THE ARABIAN NIGHTS AS A SOURCE FOR DAILY LIFE IN THE MAMLUK PERIOD Irmeli Perho The story collection the Arabian Nights is problematic as a source for social history. How much in these stories can we accept as accurate descriptions of social life? In Muhsin Mahdi's opinion, the stories should not be used as a source for the study of the 'manners and customs of Oriental societies'. According to him, the stories were of exotic places and times filled with characærs who could experience more or less anything. (Mahdi 1994: 180, n. 58.) But fairy tales always æll something about tt¡g society of their audience. To make the story interesting to the audience, a storyt€ller or an author had to tetl about problems or conflicts that the audience could recognise even though the particular story was set in an imaginary land and had mermaids or fairies as major characters. The storytellef could not paint too odd a picture, but had to retain some degree of familiarity so that the audience was able to imagine tlrc scenery. Therefore, mixed witlr the remarkable occl¡Íences, all stories contain small everyday details or references to customs with which the contemporary audience was familiar. This applies to the Nights' stories as well. The fantastic stories contain many details: the house of a physician is described, the friends of a ba¡ber a¡e listed, a broker collects his fees, etc. In this a¡ticle I intend to look into these dehils and try to find out if they are confirmed or discounted by what is othen¡vise known of the period. -

How many hundreds or thousands of miles did they travel from the factory to reach you? The importance of international trade is evident everywhere you look. Trade was also important to the economies of ancient civilizations. When Egyptians first settled along the Nile, the resources of the river supplied them with what they needed to survive. Grain grew quickly in the healthy soil of the Nile, so the people had plenty to eat. The Egyptians used mud and stones found along the river to make sturdy homes and monuments. Clothing, paper, and lamp oil were all locally produced from plants and animals. Ancient Egyptians traded along the Nile Of course, ancient Egyptians soon desired River and beyond. These boats returned with items that the Egyptians desired. As Egyptian civilization developed, the need grew for better wood. -
