Given the large number and complexity of environmental chemicals or pollutants, the current scientific approaches for assessment of the environmental pollution status using chemical analysis of air, water, soil, and other environmental samples alone may not offer meaningful assessment of the pollution status of a particular ecosystem and the risk of the pollution to human health. Complex environmental pollution problems can not be solved either by modern environmental engi- neering or technology alone. Integration of a variety of environmental sciences including basic environmental re- search, environmental engineering, ecology, and management on social and economic activities will provide effective solutions to complex environmental problems. My presentation will provide an overview of environmental pollution from an environmental health perspective. Key environmental technologies and approaches will be described, and examples of the application of these technologies and methods to understanding adverse health effects of environ- mental chemical exposures will be presented. Opportunities for future studies of environmental health and disease will also be discussed. EPPH 2010 3 Conference Guide Plenary Speech: The Need for Innovation in Environmental Toxicology Speaker: Prof. Michael C Newman, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, USA Time: 09:45-10:30, June 22, 2010 Location: Grand Ballroom ABC, 3rd floor, Crowne Plaza Chengdu Abstract: The maturation of environmental toxicology as a science requires an insightful balance of in- novation and retention of sound concepts upon which regulations are based. This talk highlights the increasingly ur- gent need to re-examine some existing ideas and methods while carefully preserving the regulatory and risk assess- ment frameworks built upon them. Environmental toxicology will be examined in a general context, suggesting how best to decide what does or does not need changing, and how to best implement change. Then two examples will be discussed to illustrate difficulties that can only be resolved by innovation. Plenary Speech: TBD Speaker: Prof. Paolo F.
