The bootstrap (>50%) consensus trees of the MP analyses of each separate dataset differed in the degree of resolution and overall clade support, but there were no contradicting groups with strong bootstrap support. MP and BI combined analyses recovered similar relationships, with the notable exception of the BI analysis not resolving section Mormodes as monophy- letic. However, sections Coryodes and Mormodes were strongly and weakly supported as monophyletic by the MP analysis, respectively, and each has diagnostic morphological characters and different geographical distribution.

The species showed remarkable seed shape variations (fusiform, spathulate, ovoid, filiform) irrespective of their taxonomic position. Epiphytes produced relatively small-sized seeds compared to their terrestrial, lithophytic, or mycoheterotrophic counterparts. Seeds were truncated (length/width < 6.0) in 27 species, and were mostly elongated (length/width = 19.957 ± 1.459) in the orchidoid species Goodyera biflora (Lindl.) Hook.f. The number or size of testa cells was found fairly consistent at the genus level, and their walls were straight, sinuous, or undulate. Periclinal walls possessed vertical or oblique ornamentation in 6 species, which is of taxonomic implication. Embryos were rather tiny and most of the seed space (even >90% in 7 species) was occupied by air.

They have functions of attracting pollinators or defense function, insecticidal properties, and are even used as pharmaceutical agents. Because of the importance of terpenoids, an increasing number of plants are required to investigate the function and evolution of terpene synthases (TPSs) that are the key enzymes in terpenoids biosynthesis. Orchidacea, containing more than 800 genera and 28,000 species, is one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants, and is widely distributed. Here, the diversification of the TPSs evolution in Orchidaceae is revealed. A characterization and phylogeny of TPSs from four different species with whole genome sequences is available. Phylogenetic analysis of orchid TPSs indicates these genes are divided into TPS-a, -b, -e/f, and g subfamilies, and their duplicated copies are increased in derived orchid species compared to that in the early divergence orchid, A.

  • Orchids of Mexico There Are About 30,000 Orchids in the World
Orchids of Mexico There are about 30,000 orchids in the world. Over 1,200 of them can be found in Mexico. Of these, about 250 are found ONLY in Mexico. Many of the orchids shown here are common, however, some are rare, many are threatened and a few are endangered. At least one is extinct in the wild. Acineta barkeri Found in Oaxaca and Chiapas in cloud forests at elevations around 1000 to 2000 meters as a medium sized, warm growing epiphyte with ovoid, slightly compressed, longitudinally sulcate pseudobulbs partially enveloped by fibrous sheaths and carrying 3 to 4, apical, erect, plicate, coriaceous, elliptic, acuminate, attenuate and channeled below into the base leaves that blooms in the summer on basal, 2 to 3, pendant, terete, racemose, slightly flexuous, 12 to 16" (30 to 40 cm) long, 15 to 20 flowered inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb as a new growth appears, with several, tubular, scarious, coffee brown bracts and elliptic-ovate, cucullate, round to obtuse floral bracts carrying simultaneously opening, fragrant flowers. Acianthera breviflora Found in Oaxaca, a miniature sized epiphytic orchid. Very little data is available on this apparently rare orchid. Acianthera chrysantha Found in Jalisco, Michoacan, Guerrero, Mexico and Oaxaca on Pacific facing slopes or in humid sub-deciduous forests at elevations of 1500 to 2400 meters as a small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with a stiff, erect ramicaul carrying a single, apical, thick, rigid, sessile, oblong, obtuse apically and below into the elongate, channeled, petiolate base leaf that blooms on a apical, short, stiff, erect, fasciculate, (1" (2.5 cm) long, few (4 to 5) flowered inflorescence arising through a narrow spathe that holds the flowers close to the base of the leaf.

  • A Preliminary Checklist of the Vascular Plants of the Chiquibul Forest, Belize
E D I N B U R G H J O U R N A L O F B O T A N Y 63 (2&3): 269–321 (2006) 269 doi:10.1017/S0960428606000618 E Trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (2006) Issued 30 November 2006 A PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST OF THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF THE CHIQUIBUL FOREST, BELIZE S. G. M. BRIDGEWATER1,D.J.HARRIS2,C.WHITEFOORD1, A. K. MONRO1,M.G.PENN1,D.A.SUTTON1,B.SAYER3,B.ADAMS4, M. J. BALICK5,D.H.ATHA5,J.SOLOMON6 &B.K.HOLST7 Covering an area of 177,000 hectares, the region known within Belize as the Chiquibul Forest comprises the country’s largest forest reserve and includes the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, the Chiquibul National Park and the Caracol Archaeological Reserve. Based on 7047 herbarium and live collections, a checklist of 1355 species of vascular plant is presented for this area, of which 87 species are believed to be new records for the country. Of the 41 species of plant known to be endemic to Belize, four have been recorded within the Chiquibul, and 12 species are listed in The World Conservation Union (IUCN) 2006 Red List of Threatened Species. Although the Chiquibul Forest has been relatively well collected, there are geographical biases in botanical sampling which have focused historically primarily on the limestone forests of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. A brief review of the collecting history of the Chiquibul is provided, and recommendations are given on where future collecting efforts may best be focused. The Chiquibul Forest is shown to be a significant regional centre of plant diversity and an important component of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.

  • An Updated Checklist of the Orchidaceae of Panama
LANKESTERIANA 14(1): 135—364. 2014. AN UPDATED CHECKLIST OF THE ORCHIDACEAE OF PANAMA DIEGO BOGARÍN1,2,4, ZULEIKA SERRACÍN2, ZABDY SAMUDIO2, RAFAEL RINCÓN2 & FRANCO PUPULIN1,3 1 Jardín Botánico Lankester, Universidad de Costa Rica. The Orchidaceae is one of the most diverse vascular plant families in the Neotropics and the most diverse in Panama. The number of species is triple that of other well-represented families of angiosperms such as Rubiaceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae. Despite its importance in terms of diversity, the latest checklist was published ten years ago and the latest in-depth taxonomic treatments were published in 1949 and 1993. The accumulation of information over the years and the need to update the nomenclature and to clarify taxonomic concepts made necessary the publication of an up-dated checklist of the Orchidaceae of Panama. This checklist was completed by studying specimens strictly collected in Panama and vouchered in herbaria. Species are presented alphabetically with their synonyms and herbarium vouchers. The data were analyzed to explain the patterns of geographic distribution, most diverse taxa, endemism, exotic species and relationships with other nearby floras. The checklist contains 1365 species (including two natural hybrids and three subspecies) in four subfamilies, 16 tribes, 27 subtribes and 187 genera. Four exotic species were recorded.
