Although Far Niente was founded in 1885, the win- ery’s modern era dates from 1979, when Gil & Beth Nickel rescued the long-abandoned stone winery in Oakville and began restoration of the historic estate. After years together working on their dream, Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel, and Dolce became globally recognized with their highly sought-after wines. In 2003, Gil passed away due to an aggressive form of melanoma. Just three months before his death, despite being gravely ill, Gil made his final pub- lic appearance at the V Wine Celebration.
