University Relations Division Collection Papers, 1936-1977 (predominantly, 1949-1977) 64.5 linear feet Accession # 5 OCLC # DALNET # The papers of the University Relations Division reflect the activities of Wayne’s public relations offices. They consist of press releases, photographs, correspondence, minutes, reports, and clippings. The papers focus on general subjects, including the promotion of the United States Bicentennial, Wayne's Centennial, the Michigan Legislature's allocation and Wayne's budget, and Wayne's athletics program. The Division underwent several name changes to more accurately reflect its services. In the 1940s it was called the Community Relations Program and aimed to establish a working relationship between the University and any group or individual within the community with the intent of selling the University as a service institution to the community. In August of 1949, all University activities and programs related to public communication and interpretation of the University’s work were integrated to form the Division of Community Relations under the direction of Percival Dodge. The new division included the Office of Press Relations, Wayne University Speakers’ Bureau, and the Office of Community Services. William E. Stirton replaced Dodge as the director on July 1, 1952. Frank X. Tuohey replaced Stirton in October of 1955. The Office of Press Relations and Publication Services, under Tuohey’s direction, assisted all units of the University in internal and external relations projects. The office was divided into art, printing, publications, and press relations. The primary function of the Office of Press Relations was to interpret the University to the community through all available media such as newspapers, magazines, radio and television. A second function was to assist in the publicizing of material relating to the University or any of its components by providing professional help and advice. The third service was the collection and preparation of news and information upon the request of newspapers, magazines, radio, TV and other media. The office also had full editorial responsibility for the University staff 2 University Relations Division Collection publication, Inside Wayne, for The Alumni News and The Otherlander. This collection most closely reflects the )ffice of Press Relations. In April of 1961 the unit was redesignated the Division of University Relations to reflect more realistically the Division’s services. The new division operated not only to interpret the University to the community through all available media, but also in the collection and preparation of news and information upon request from such media as newspapers, magazines, journals, radio, television and wire services. A continuous flow of information about the University was disseminated through daily press releases and through a weekly newsletter. In addition, special features, mat releases, photographs and radio and television programs were prepared to insure full public awareness of the University. Tuohey remained as director. Paul J. Pentecost continued as assistant director devoting the majority of his attention to press relations. Charles A. Lewis continued as assistant director editing Inside Wayne, Alumni News and the Otherlander. In 1978, the Division of University Relations consisted of seven units including Information Services and Publications. These two units were concerned with publicity, publications, advertising, and personal contact. Together they encompassed most of the “communications services” of University Relations. Information Services directed its energies toward interpretation of university- related activities and higher education to the general public through the mass media. Through a number of regular publications, the publications office kept those with direct ties or strong interest in Wayne State abreast of university activities. This office was responsible for Wayne Report, Alumni News, and WDET Program Guide. Additional files relating to the work of the Division of University Relations can be found in the University Relations Division Information Services Collection(1940- 68) which includes press releases and commencement material. 3 University Relations Division Collection Important subjects in the collection: Air Cargo Research McGregor Conference Center Alumni Association Medicine - Student biographies Athletes women Medicine, School of Athletics Michigan Week Awards Mrs. Wayne State University Contest Ban Music Department Baseball l National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Nursing, College of Blood Symposium Pharmacy, College of Budget, University Pilafian and Montana Architects Buildings President’s Athletic Conference Centennial, WSU Radio Central High School Alumni Reunion ROTC Civil Defense Program Rowing Commencement Scholarships Communism Selective Service Convertaplane Sororities Cross Country Speaker ban Detroit Schmidt Farm Detroit – Riot of 1967 Student Center Detroit Bicentennial Commission Students, Physically Disabled Detroit Board of Education Swimming Detroit Federation of Teachers Tennis Draft The Metro Education, College of Track Education Day TV Broadcasting Emancipation Centennial Veterans Engineering, College of Vietnam Fencing Wayne Foundation Football Wayne State University - History Golf Wayne Victory John Wayne Day WDET Kresge Science Library World War II - Wayne activities Law School Wrestling Legislature, Michigan Loyalty Oath Important correspondents in the collection are: Bartlett, Lynn M.
