How Martin Kaymer won the 2014 U.S. Open Martin Kaymer (65-65) became the first player to record consecutive rounds of 65 or better to open a Major Championship en route to the lowest opening 36-hole score in U.S. Open history (10-under 130) and a six-stroke lead at the halfway point of the 114 th U.S. Open Championship. He added rounds of 72-69 for an eight-stroke victory over Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler, becoming the seventh player (8 times) to win the U.S. Open in wire-to-wire fashion (no ties), joining Walter Hagen (1914), James Barnes (1921), Ben Hogan (1953), Tony Jacklin (1970), Tiger Woods (2000, 2002) and Rory McIlroy (2011). Kaymer notches his third official PGA TOUR victory: 2010 PGA Championship, 2014 PLAYERS Championship, 2014 U.S. Open. He also won the 2011 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions (unofficial). Kaymer is one of only four players to have a victory at THE PLAYERS (2014), a World Golf Championships event (2011 HSBC Champions) and a major (2010 PGA Championship, 2014 U.S. Open), along with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott. Becomes the 18 th player to win the PGA Championship and U.S. Open in a career. One of those players was the late Payne Stewart, winner of the 1989 PGA Championship and the 1991 and 1999 U.S. Open, with the latter held at Pinehurst No. 2. Kaymer’s victory comes in his 76 th PGA TOUR start at the age of 29 years, 5 months and 18 days. Records the 15 th win by a player in his 20s this season, compared to 15 in their 30s and one in his 40s (John Senden). On Friday, Kaymer became the sixth player to reach double digits under par in a U.S. Open, joining Gil Morgan (1992), Tiger Woods (2000), Jim Furyk (2003), Ricky Barnes (2009) and Rory McIlroy (2011). Of that group, Woods, Furyk and McIlroy went on to win. Kaymer becomes the fourth player to win a major in the same season as their victory at THE PLAYERS, joining Tiger Woods (2001 Masters), Hal Sutton (1983 PGA Championship) and Jack Nicklaus (1978 Open Championship). The previous-best finish by a PLAYERS Championship winner at the U.S. Open (same season): Hal Sutton (6 th in 1983), Jack Nicklaus (T6 in 1978) and Greg Norman (T6 in 1994). Kaymer made his 26 th start in a major championship this week, with his four previous top-10 finishes coming in a five- major stretch from 2009 to 2010: 2009 PGA Championship (T6), 2010 U.S. Open (T8), 2010 Open Championship (T7) and 2010 PGA Championship (won). Kaymer wins in his 12 th start of the PGA TOUR season, with his win at the U.S. Open and PLAYERS Championship among his three top 10s (T8 at the WGC-HSBC Champions).
