CHEYEITE SUMMARY This thesis sets out to examine the nature of modern Jewish stereotyping in English society with reference to a wide range of English fiction which, for the most part, has been previously undocu- mented in these terms. Instead of a purely literary analysis of the fictional Jewish stereotype, this thesis places the Jewish stereotype in a specific ideological and historical context which is then related to a given writer--or group of writers—and their fiction. Two chapters, more- over, demonstrate the material results of Jewish stereotyping in English society with reference to the internalisation and institu- tionalisation of Jewish stereotyping by British Jewry and the Anglo- Jewish novel. The variety and impact of Jewish stereotyping is shown to encompass the ideologies of liberalism, social Darwinism, Imperialism, antisemitism, proto-Zionism, Socialism and mainstream versions of sexuality. The concluding chapter relates the modern Jewish stereotype, which was formed after the 1870s, to a more general ahistorical mythic view of the Jew. In particular, this chapter refers to the links between modern Jewish stereotyping and the traditional Christian view of the Jew. With reference to a wide range of writers, more general questions are raised in this chapter concerning the continuity of Jewish stereotyping and the choice of a given stereotype by a particular social or literary group. iv Finally, this thesis demonstrates the ambivalent nature of Jewish stereotyping, especially in relation to the doctrines of liberalism and a parliamentary political consensus. Where this con- sensus was rejected, then a more rigidly hcetile Jewish stereotype was utilised by a given writer. Yet, even within a liberal culture, Jewish stereotyping in both literature and society was a comrron means of shaping popular perceptions of British Jewry. In this way, individual Jews were invariably regarded as moral symbols of either good or evil in the imagination of both the writer and the political ideologue. CHAPTER ONE JEWISH STEREIflYPING: A THFDRETICAL INflJWCTION Cohn Holmes, in his seminal study of "Anti-Semitism in British Society, 1876-1939", has correctly argued that: We need to know far more about such [Jewish stereotypical] images, expressed outside of the heat of battle by those who do not figure as central characters in the history of anti- semitism. By presenting particular images of Jews, whether literary or verbal, writers and artists hoped to achieve an identification with their various audiences and it is through such sources ... that we are able to obtain a glimpse of the more general perceptions of Jews in British society." It. was this conclusion that proved the academic spur for this thesis. However, there have been, in fact, as many as a dozen full-length studies of Jewish stereotyping in English fiction which cover in part, or as a whole, the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Never- theless, the impact of such studies on the academic fields of English literary criticism, literary history, and even the historiography of antisemitism, has been minimal. This is hardly surprising since the nine full length studies and doctoral dissertations written in the last two decades on this area--often on the same authors and periods--do not even refer to each other. 2 Given this state of affairs it is arguable whether, at this stage, the study of Jewish stereotyping in English fiction can be categorized as an academic discipline at all. The primary aim of this Introduction will be, therefore, to bring together these existing studies. By doing this I hope for the first time theoretically to examine the question of Jewish stereotyping from the perspective of an academic body of material on this question. Where relevant, comparative material will also be included in the discussion. In a bid to be comprehensive I will divide the Introduction into three sections which will examine, 2 respectively, the relationship between Jewish stereotyping and Anti- semitism, Literature and History. In this way I will begin to make theoretical connections between existing academic disciplines and the nascent discipline of the study of Jewish stereotyping. Needless to say, in the absence of any academic debate, my theoretical assumptions should be considered to be merely a tentative first word on these questions. Nevertheless, the last section will conclude with a summary of my particular assumptions which will be applied to the body of the thesis. Jewish Stereotyping and Antisemitism The main reason why it has been possible to produce full-length studies of Jewish stereotyping with the minimum of theoretical con- sideration is the underlying comnon-sense assumption in these studies that Jewish stereotyping and antisemitism are, quite simply, synony- mous concepts. Anne Aresty Naman, for instance, in her "The Jew in the Victorian Novel" (1980) argues that: "The presence of a Jewish character in a Victorian novel may well throw a reader, especially one who is sensitively aware of both art and race relationships, into a tangle of confused questioning and ambivalent conclusions. For one finds that one simultaneously encounters two generally separate realms of experience: that of novel-reading and that of anti-semitism."3 Whether "novel-reading and anti-semitism" should be considered to be "two separate realms of experience" will be discussed in the next section. However, what is of interest at this point is Naman's seemingly innocent conflation of "the presence of a Jewish character in a Victorian novel" with the realm of "antisemitisin." If the broadly accepted definition of antisemitism as "an attitude of hos- tility to Jews as such" is noted, then one can, perhaps, see how it is possible for studies of Jewish stereotyping to consistently con- flate the "hostile" Jewish stereotype in English fiction with "anti- 3 semitism." It has been, therefore, possible for studies of Jewish stereotyping simply to refer to a centuries old history of anti- semitism as, in itself, a sufficient causal explanation of the hos- tile Jewish stereotype appearing in modern English fiction.

Are the “freedom fighters”, who are writing in protection of the Jewish population, doing so by way of clear conscious or career incentivization? What personal risks do these journalists take from the burden of speaking their truths? Also, as the period progresses and the 20th century truly takes hold, are the antisemitic beliefs held by the French remnants of the Dreyfus Affair, or are they influenced by current ideas held in Nazi Germany? 2 Introduction: Modern French history is ripe with triumph and exhilaration, but also stress, disruptions, and mistakes.

MALAMUD* One of the most important questions for a serious debate on affirmative action is why certain minority groups need affirmative action while others have succeeded without it. The question is rarely asked, however, because the comparisonthat most frequently comes to mind-i.e., blacks and Jews-is seen by many as taboo. Daniel A. Farberand Suzanna Sherry have breached that taboo in recent writings. ProfessorMalamud's Article draws on work in the Jewish Studies field to respond to Farberand Sherry. It begins by critiquing their claim that Jewish values account for Jewish success. It then explores and embraces alternative explanations-some of which Farberand Sheny reject as anti-Semitic-as essentialparts of the story ofJewish success in America. 1 Jews arepeople who are not what anti-Semitessay they are. Jean-Paul Sartre ha[s] written that for Jews authenticity means not to deny what in fact they are. Yes, but it also means not to claim more than one has a right to.2 Defenders of affirmative action today are publicly faced with questions once thought improper in polite company. For Jewish liberals, the most disturbing question on the list is that posed by the comparison between the twentieth-century Jewish and African-American experiences in the United States. It goes something like this: The Jews succeeded in America without affirmative action. In fact, the Jews have done better on any reasonable measure of economic and educational achievement than members of the dominant majority, and began to succeed even while they were still being discriminated against by this country's elite institutions.

    THE HISTORICAL ORIGINS OF ANTISEMITISM …Let me give you my honest advice. First, their synagogues or churches should be set on fire, and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder of it. And this ought to be done for the honor of God and Christianity… (Martin Luther, 1543) When Wilhelm Marr, a 19th Century German journalist, coined the term antisemitism, he was giving a new expression to a very old hatred. Antisemitism, the hatred of Jews and Judaism, has roots of ancient origin, pre-dating the Christian era and evolving throughout the Middle Ages into the modern era. Throughout their history, Jews have been the victims of a persistent pattern of persecution, culminating finally in the 20th Century in mass murder. The term denoting hatred of the Jews – antisemitism – is spelled here and hereafter unhyphenated and in the lower case. This spelling is more historically and etymologically correct since “Semitic” refers not to a race of people, as Marr and other racists of his time wrongly believed, but to a group of languages which includes Arabic as well as Hebrew. Hence, the oft-used spelling “anti-Semitism” means, literally, a prejudice against Semitic-speaking people, not the hatred of people adhering to the Jewish religion and culture. ANTISEMITISM DURING THE PRE-CHRISTIAN ERA Expressions of anti-Jewish prejudice appeared as early as the 4th Century B.C.E. in Greece and Egypt, whose people drew stark distinction between themselves and others, whom they regarded as “strangers,” “foreigners,” or “barbarians.” Jewish religious practice, based as it was on an uncompromising monotheism and strict adherence to their religious laws and social customs, only heightened endemic suspicions and excited hostility in societies already prone to ethnocentric excess.

According to Michael Ragussis, British conversionist societies justified their activities by claiming to 'aid in this divine plan, and with a kind of reverse logic their establishment was viewed as a sign of the proximity of the Second Coming' (Figures: 5). 3. Roger of Wendover's Flores historiarwn and Matthew Paris's Chrmzica majora from . the early thirteenth century provide all of the details of the legend, but the transgressor in their versions is Pilate's doorkeeper, a Roman named Cartaphilus, and not a Jew (Anderson, Legend 16-21). \Vhile in certain Italian versions of this tale the accursed wanderer is a Jew (19), he is not described as Jewish in the British legend until the early seventeenth century. The conjunction between the entry of this legend and Jews into England is in keeping with N.J.

This paper argues that the significance of dehumanization in the context of National Socialism can be understood only if its ideological dimension is taken into account. The author concentrates on Alfred Rosenberg’s racist doctrine and shows that Nazi ideology can be read as a political anthropology that grounds both the belief in the German privilege and the dehumanization of the Jews. This anthropological framework combines biological, cultural and metaphysical aspects. Therefore, it cannot be reduced to biologism. This new reading of Nazi ideology supports three general conclusions: First, the author reveals a complex strategy of dehumanization which is not considered in the current psychological debate.

    When I open my eyes, I'm floating in the air in an inky, black void. The air feels cold to the touch, my body shivering as I instinctively hugged myself. My first thought was that this was an awfully vivid nightmare and that someone must have left the AC on overnight. I was more than a little alarmed when I wasn't quite waking up, and that pinching myself had about the same amount of pain as it would if I did it normally. A single star twinkled into existence in the empty void, far and away from reach. Then another. And another. Soon, the emptiness was full of shining stars, and I found myself staring in wonder. I had momentarily forgotten about the biting cold at this breath-taking sight before a wooden door slammed itself into my face, making me fall over and land on a tile ground. I'm pretty sure that wasn't there before. Also, OW. Standing up and not having much better to do, I opened the door. Inside was a room with several televisions stacked on top of each other, with a short figure wrapped in a blanket playing on an old NES while seven different games played out on the screen. They turned around and looked at me, blinking twice with a piece of pocky in their mouth. I stared at her. She stared back at me. Then she picked up a controller laying on the floor and offered it to me. "Want to play?" "So you've been here all alone?" I asked, staring at her in confusion, holding the controller as I sat nearby.
