We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. This resource concentration occurs at fine (e.g. around trees, grasses or logs) and broad (e.g. habitat remnants within an agricultural matrix) scales. Arthropods, which include insects, spiders, and a range of other invertebrates, provide a range of critical ecosystem functions in drylands. Arthropods may be particularly sensitive to changes in resource concentration given their small size and habitat requirements. Limited research, however, has examined how arthropods respond to changes in resource concentration across different spatial scales. This thesis examines how the concentration of resources affects the distribution and structure of arthropod communities at multiple spatial scales in south-eastern Australia. Chapter 1 provides an overview of resource patchiness in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, and describes how it is known to affect the biota. Chapters 2 to 4 investigate how the fine-scale distribution of resources (plants, and plant-associated patches) affects the distribution and composition of arthropod communities at local (plant-plant) scales. -

Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is the major viral constraint to rice production in Africa. RYMV was first identified in 1966 in Kenya and then later in most African countries where rice is grown. Several studies have been conducted so far on its evolution, pathogenicity, resistance genes, and especially its dissemination by insects. Many of these studies showed that, among RYMV vectors, insects especially leaf-feeders found in rice fields are the major source of virus transmission. Many studies have shown that the virus is vectored by several insect species in a process of a first ingestion of leaf material and subsequent transmission in following feedings. About forty insect species were identified as vectors of RYMV since 1970 up to now. They were essentially the beetles, grasshoppers, and the leafhoppers. -
A Preliminary Assessment of the Ground-Dwelling Arthropod Community Composition in Six Common Dune Cover Types at Cape Cod National Seashore

Timm1,* and Kevin McGarigal1 Abstract - We provide a preliminary assessment of the ground-dwelling arthropod com- munity composition in six common coastal dune ecosystem land cover-types at Cape Cod National Seashore. We captured 6815 individual arthropods representing 16 arthropod orders from 1008 terrestrial pitfall trap-nights. The most abundant orders were Hyme- noptera, Diptera, Araneae, and Isopoda (76.1%, 8.5%, 5.5%, and 3.3% of total captures, respectively). There were differences in ground-dwelling arthropod community compo- sition among the three early-successional and the three later-successional cover types, with the latter having a greater overall arthropod diversity and higher capture rates for a number of the major arthropod taxa captured. Our report is among the first community- wide analyses of arthropod community composition in coastal dune ecosystems of the northeastern US. The results from this study should be viewed as a preliminary assess- ment given that: 1) we employed a single trapping method (i.e., pitfall traps); 2) traps were only open during the late-afternoon to early morning hours, and only during the summer months; and 3) captured arthropods were classified only to order. We hope our report will inspire additional research of coastal dune arthropod communities. Introduction In many terrestrial ecosystems, arthropods comprise the greatest faunal spe- cies diversity, biomass, and number of individuals (Gaston 1991, Ponder and Lunney 1999, Wilson 1985). -
Prevalence Rates of Microsporidia in Locusts and Grasshoppers in South-Western Russia

Locusts and grasshoppers are dangerous polyphagous pests of agricultural crops. In the present paper, results of screening of Acridoidea populations in the South-Western Russia for microsporidia infections including locusts Locusta migratoria, Dociostaurus maroccanus, and Calliptamus italicus and grasshoppers Chorthippus loratus, Oedipoda caerulescens, and Acrida bicolor, are presented. Microsporidia prevalence rates were estimated using light microscopy of fresh smears. Out of 179 specimens of L. migratoria sampled between 2002 and 2019 in Krasnodar Territory, Astrakhan and Rostov Regions, none was infected with microsporidia. Similarly, 95 specimens of D. marrocanus from Krasnodar Territory (2017) and Dagestan Republic (2009) were also negative for microsporidia. Meanwhile, one positive case was detected for C. italicus corresponding to 0.5 % for the total amount of 192 exemplars collected from 2002 to 2019 in Krasnodar Territory, Astrakhan and Rostov Regions. As for grasshoppers, all Ch. loratus samplings in Krasnodar Territory in 2017-2019 were infected at the prevalence rates of 2.2-15 %, though no infection was found in 40 specimens in Crimea in 2019. In 56 individuals of O. caerulescens collected from Rostov Region and Krasnodar Territory, the microsporidia prevalence rate was 1.8 %. Among 96 specimens of A. bicolor, none was infected. -
