A welcome new translation of Leskov’s grand metaphysical romp, a hallmark of 19th-century Russian literature. Leskov (1831–1895) is less well-known in this country than his near-contemporaries Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and even if Anton Chekhov claimed him as a literary ancestor—and that’s saying something—Leskov’s masterpiece doesn’t often figure on reading lists. Pevear and Volokhonsky, late of War and Peace , Anna Karenina and Dr. Zhivago , may remedy that with this accessible translation, which does a good job of preserving some of Leskov’s well-known wordplay while not being pedantic. Pevear and Volokhonsky are known for preferring to use only English words in circulation at the time of a given book’s original publication, so the tone has the slightest patina to it, as with sentences such as “I chose as a pretext that I supposedly had to go buy medicine from the herbalists for the horses, and so I went, but I went not simply, but with a cunning design.” That said, the stories gathered here, all lightly linked in the way that those of the Canterbury Tales are, remain marvels of narration, sacred and profane—for, as the translators note, the Russian word strannik “can mean anything from a real pilgrim to a simple vagabond.” The opener is a stern study in the dangers of adultery; then come other pieces set in “Wooden Russia,” the old heartland south of Moscow, with all its elaborate prejudices against Gypsies, Jews, Ukrainians and the other outsiders who so often figure in Leskov’s pages. One takeaway: Leskov admonishes us not to fear ghosts, for they “behaved themselves much more light-mindedly and, frankly speaking, stupidly, than they had shown themselves in earthly life.” A literate delight, and a book to look forward to reading more than once. Did you like this book? THE THINGS THEY CARRIED. by Tim O’Brien ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 28, 1990. It's being called a novel, but it is more a hybrid: short-stories/essays/confessions about the Vietnam War—the subject that O'Brien reasonably comes back to with every book. Some of these stories/memoirs are very good in their starkness and factualness: the title piece, about what a foot soldier actually has on him (weights included) at any given time, lends a palpability that makes the emotional freight (fear, horror, guilt) correspond superbly. Maybe the most moving piece here is "On The Rainy River," about a draftee's ambivalence about going, and how he decided to go: "I would go to war—I would kill and maybe die—because I was embarrassed not to." But so much else is so structurally coy that real effects are muted and disadvantaged: O'Brien is writing a book more about earnestness than about war, and the peekaboos of this isn't really me but of course it truly is serve no true purpose. They make this an annoyingly arty book, hiding more than not behind Hemingwayesque time-signatures and puerile repetitions about war (and memory and everything else, for that matter) being hell and heaven both. Exploring humankind's place in the universe and the nature of humanity, many of the stories in this stellar collection focus on how technological advances can impact humanity’s evolutionary journey. Chiang's ( Stories of Your Life and Others , 2002) second collection begins with an instant classic, “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate,” which won Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novelette in 2008. A time-travel fantasy set largely in ancient Baghdad, the story follows fabric merchant Fuwaad ibn Abbas after he meets an alchemist who has crafted what is essentially a time portal. After hearing life-changing stories about others who have used the portal, he decides to go back in time to try to right a terrible wrong—and realizes, too late, that nothing can erase the past. Other standout selections include “The Lifecycle of Software Objects,” a story about a software tester who, over the course of a decade, struggles to keep a sentient digital entity alive; “The Great Silence,” which brilliantly questions the theory that humankind is the only intelligent race in the universe; and “Dacey’s Patent Automatic Nanny,” which chronicles the consequences of machines raising human children. But arguably the most profound story is "Exhalation" (which won the 2009 Hugo Award for Best Short Story), a heart-rending message and warning from a scientist of a highly advanced, but now extinct, race of mechanical beings from another universe. The Enchanted Wanderer: Selected Tales. Leskov is a writer who yields enormous pleasure, breaking past sectarian literary and ideological premises. But more: we live in a moment of lowered cultural and emotional expectations, after the fall of modernism but with nothing very strong to replace it. To go back to certain earlier writers is to regain a sense of human possibility. To go back to Leskov is to regain a sense of the passion, sometimes the joy, that can be part of the human enterprise. —Irving Howe, “Justice for Leskov” Nikolai Leskov, a younger contemporary of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy and one of the great masters of Russian fiction, is a writer who keeps being discovered. The first to discover him was Leskov himself. He was in his late twenties and working as a business agent for his uncle, a Russianized Scotsman named Alexander Scott, whose firm managed the vast estates of two noble Russian families. Leskov later described those years, from 1857 to 1859, as the best period of his life. He traveled all over Russia, “from the Black Sea to the White and from Brod to Krasny Yar,” and sent back reports in the form of letters to his uncle. “I had no need to clear myself a path to the people through books and ready-made ideas,” he later wrote. “I studied them in place. Books were a precious help to me, but I was the helmsman. Hence I’m not rooted in any school, because it was not in school that I learned, but on Scott’s barges.” These travels gave him a great store of impressions that he drew upon all his life. Scott was struck by the literary quality of Leskov’s reports and used to read them aloud to his neighbors, one of whom praised them so highly that it gave Leskov the idea of becoming a writer. As he commented rather drily in a third-person “Note on Himself” thirty years later: “His writing began by chance.” He was born in the village of Gorokhovo, near the town of Orel (pronounced “Oryól”), in 1831. Orel, located in the Russian heartland, the so- called “wooden Russia,” some two hundred and twenty miles southwest of Moscow, is the setting of five of the seventeen stories in the present collection. Another is set in Mtsensk, which is in the Orel region, and five more take place in other provincial Russian towns. This preponderance of the provincial is typical of Leskov’s work as a whole, though, as the reader will see, he could also tell sophisticated and witty stories set in Petersburg, Moscow, Vienna . On his father’s side, Leskov came from several generations of priests serving the village of Leski, which gave them their family name. His father, too, received a seminary education, but he broke with tradition and entered government service in the Orel courts, eventually attaining the rank of collegiate assessor, which conferred hereditary nobility. His mother was from an impoverished aristocratic family: her father, a Moscow nobleman who had lost everything during the French invasion in 1812, worked as an estate manager in Gorokhovo; her mother, of whom Leskov gives us a fine portrait in the last chapter of “Deathless Golovan,” was of Moscow merchant stock and, as Leskov says, “was taken in marriage into a noble family ‘not for her wealth, but for her beauty.’ ” Leskov thus combined in himself the three estates—noble, mercantile, and clerical—but in oddly mixed and attenuated forms.

War is being conducted apart from the government by the Russian people itself... and the Slavic Committee of Moscow which is treasury and commissariat. I began recruitment [of volunteers] without any Permission... Society won for itself this right." - Ivan Aksakov As Ivan Aksakov penned these words in September 1876, he was at the center of a Pan- Slavist campaign to generate support, both humanitarian and military, for the "liberation" of the orthodox Slavs in Ottoman Europe. 1 In June of that year, Serbia and Montenegro had declared war on the Ottomans in response to their ruthless suppression of revolts in their Balkan provinces. When these revolts had broken out the previous summer, a host of civil societies in the Russian Empire began raising money and supplies for refugees and insurgents. Among those societies, the undisputed leader was the Slavic Benevolent Committee chaired by Aksakov himself. Founded in Moscow in 1858, the committee opened new offices in the empire's provincial capitals in the wake of the Balkan revolts. From those offices, it dispatched representatives tasked with soliciting donations from the countryside. These representatives met with groups from all social estates ( soslovie ), hoping to persuade them that it was their duty to aid their oppressed Slavic brethren. With the donations they collected, committee directors arranged transportation for doctors, nurses, and other aid workers to the rebelling Ottoman provinces.

Unlike Antonina Khanzhonkova and Elizaveta Thiemann, who produced films for studios officially owned by their husbands, Bakhareva opened her own film company and became its official head. In the 1916 reference guide Vsia Kinematographia/All the Cinematography, there are two titles for her company: “The Artistic Film” [“Khudozhestvennaia lenta”] and “N. D. Bakhareva and K” (31). In the trade press, Bakhareva’s studio was later called “The Russian Film Business” [“Rossiiskoe Kino-delo”] and “The Film Business” [“Kino-delo”] (“Novye lenty” [1917]; “Khronika” [1916]). Sometimes films produced by her studio were associated with a company called Prodalent, which distributed them. In her studio, Bakhareva worked not only as a producer but also as a screenwriter. She wrote scripts for six films, but none of her screenplays have been preserved. Moreover, all the films released by The Artistic Film (and later The Russian Film Business) are lost, and it is hard to judge their aesthetic value. We are fortunate to have Bakhareva’s memoirs today, which are held at the Bakhmeteff Archive of Russian and East European Culture at Columbia University, but these papers are dedicated to the writer Nikolai Leskov, Bakhareva’s famous grandfather, and, unfortunately, provide very little information about her work in cinema and the films she made. In fact, Bakhareva’s grandfather was a presence throughout much of her career.

V Nikitenko about the Polish Uprising, in a note dated 18 March 1863 The closing of the Dostoevskii brothers'journal Vremia (1861-63) has intriguing and far-reaching consequences for the evolution of Fedor Dos- toevskii's political philosophy and for our sense of Russia's ideological landscape around the time of the January Uprising of 1863 in Poland. The government closed the journal due to an article about Polish-Russian rela­ tions by Nikolai Strakhov entitled "Rokovoi vopros" (A Fateful Question), which appeared in Vremia in April 1863. Government officials and the public alike were shocked by what they took as the article's pro-Polish sen­ timents and its denigration of the Russian nation. Indeed, Andrzej Walicki compares the ensuing controversy to the storm caused by Petr Chaadaev's famous "Filosoficheskoe pis'mo" (Philosophical Letter, 1836).' Acting on Alexander IPs direct order, the minister of internal affairs, P. A. Valuev, closed the journal on 24 May, citing in his decision the "indecent and even subversive content" of Strakhov's article, which criticized the government and offended Russian national sentiment. As a Soviet writer, you have mas- tered the art, telling a tale that isn’t just about workers of the theater, but which pre- sents the history of the harsh, corrupt oppression of serfdom, which hung as a yoke over the necks of the masses for many centuries. As the centuries passed, like a black vortex, our Rus’ was sucked down and swamped by all the creatures that de- faced the Earth with their disease. It’s painful to look at the tortured faces of cultural works, to see their “toupee-ness” in the Revolution (the main revolutionary forces were not the peasants, but the working ‘proletariat’) [Отзывы: Л. 15]2.
